I love when the people who work at an ethnic restaurant speak and know the culture of the cuisine. So true with Russian Samovar. The evening jazz band was a bonus to our dining experience. We had the borscht and wild mushroom soup accompanied by two chicken dishes and cherry dumplings for dessert. All were tasty!
Stepping into this place was like a nostalgic journey back to the Soviet Union era, complete with samovars, red leather chairs, and metal cup holders. The food had a delightful homemade quality to it. While the prices were a tad on the higher side, it almost felt like they were factoring in the cost of a time travel ticket – they even charged $8 for a cup of hot water! 😧 The service was efficient, though initially, we had a fleeting feeling of being uninvited guests upon our arrival.
The food here is my favorite. Period. The chicken Kiev and Duck Ala Russe were the best I’ve had in NYC. Also had a lovely cranberry ginger drink and the infused vodka is also a treat. Be sure to try the medovik with Russian tea served with cherries for dessert. The atmosphere is comfortable and cozy. The servers are attentive, kind and helpful. This was our second time there and we had a great time.
Unsuspecting piano bar a few minutes off Times Square. We tried a few of the Russian cocktails and were pleased with the variety of options available. The music was good, but bar service was definitely slow. Food looked really expensive, but I’d give it a chance if I’m ever back in town.
The atmosphere is quite Russian and the food is delicious. However, the taste is not original- golubtsi and pirogi are very fatty and do not taste as should. The piano performance was good.Be careful is the female WC - lockers can get stuck.
Omg! It’s a gem! They really keeps traditions here. Downstairs is a restaurant and Upstairs is a 2 rooms which you can rent. Beautiful atmosphere. Delicious food! Just an amazing!!!!
Ive been here many times over several years. Excellent ambiance and food. The service is cordial and usually good, though occasionally it can be slow and disorganized. But even then with a bit of effort it works out. The short ribs are my favorite, the best Ive had anywhere. The Olivier salad is excellent. But what makes the experience extra special is the beautiful and amazingly talented pianist. The flavored vodkas are not to be missed.
Strange little place. Russian food and drink, however, not a Russian in sight. Bartender was Mexican, cooks were Mexican. -Nothing wrong with that just an observation. Ordered shuba, gribnoi, pirozhok, black bread , and Ру́сский Станда́рт. Everything was served quickly except for the black bread that never arrived. Food was very fresh and excellent compared with other local Russian places. Prices are outrageous but what else can you expect in NYC?
Overpriced, really small food quantities, soup & salads served even without bread!! Its a shame for the Russian cuisine!! For 2 soups & salads & 2 cocktails -105usd!! Not polite service. Dont go. Try the central asian cuisine restaurant in the financial district Farida (its not an advertising, I tried both and Faridas is waaay better quantities and food is amazing, there is also live central asian instrument music sometimes). There are some of russian dishes (soups and salads) and very tasty central asian home made dishes which are really representative of this cuisine. I recommend trying lagman , kuyrdak, beshbarmak (kazakh and kirgyz national Dish), manti, chuchvara (pelmeni) or obviously plov. You wont regret it.
On Saturday 11/9 we went to Russian Samovar in early afternoon and I had a medical emergency. The staff were amazing!! Helpful and caring. Unfortunately we were not able to stay and enjoy a meal but plan to the next time we are in NYC. I want to thank everyone who was there. Thank you, Thank you Thank you!!
If youre craving excellent Russian food in Manhattan, this spot is a must-visit! The dishes are authentic, flavorful, and expertly prepared. With a cozy atmosphere and friendly service, its a perfect place for a memorable meal. Highly recommend!
Was my first time here and I thought it was a good overall experience. Food seemed authentic so it does live up to its name. Staff may not be the most warm, free flowing, but they mean well. And frankly I think it’s more of a cultural thing. Anyway, if you’re interested in some authentic Russian food, this is your spot.
Food was delicious. My first time trying Russian food. I loved the beet salad & the smoked salmon wrapped in crepes. I’d definitely recommend these dishes. They had a gypsy dancing & someone singing. It’s very authentic & culture is truly kept. I tend to love very contemporary modern spaces with multicultural crowds but it was nice to experience this traditional ambiance. It definitely had its niche. If you’re looking for authentic delicious fresh Russian food, atmosphere & ambiance, I’d recommend.
Good food, good service. The pianist showed up about halfway through our dinner and was a nice touch to the atmosphere. I had the salmon belini appetizer, a Moscow mule, and chicken Kiev and it was all super delicious.
This was my first time to this restaurant and they did not disappoint! The look and side from the exterior is very deceiving! The place is rather large! Let’s put it this way, the restroom is normal size stalls and not just 1 stall but 3! I know! Unheard of in NYC! Very clean I might add!We opted for the prix fix meal which included, an appetizer, soup, entree, dessert and coffee or tea. Our appetizer was the Vinegret which is roasted beets, potato, onion (not mentioned on menu) and pickle salad in sunflower oil. I’m not a fan of beets and the onions were rather strong with this. I would go with another choice. Soup was the borscht which was delicious. Served with sour cream on the side. Yes, this is beet soup but this kind of beet, I enjoy! In addition to the prix fix meal I also ordered the Deruny which is pan fried potato pancakes. The serving is 2 large potato pancakes with sour cream on the side. They are rather large and dense with potato. Very tasty! The entree was beef stroganoff which is strips of tenderloin in a mushroom cream sauce served with buttered egg noodles. The sauce is rich and very good. It is nicely presented in a cast iron pan with the noodles on the side. The portion looks small, but believe me it isn’t! We actually had left overs. For dessert we had the Smetannik Cake which is traditional layered cake with sour cream! Absolutely amazing! There was flavor of vanilla, chocolate, spice, orange zest, raisins and more that we couldn’t figure out! One of the best cakes I’ve ever eaten! Similar texture of a carrot cake but better! Tea is served with cherry preserves! Put that in the tea and it makes a world of a difference! I’m not sure if I will ever drink tea without preserves in it again! After you drink all the tea, don’t waste those cherries, they are delicious! Just watch for the pits! All this for $45 with the exception of the potato pancakes!Service was perfect! Julia was our server and she was attentive, friendly, helpful and totally deserving of a 25% tip, which I left!Atmosphere was so enjoyable. Several samovars were on display in the restaurant. Staff spoke Russian and English very well! Made the restaurant more authentic hearing the language being spoken. The music was modern set to a jazz beat which was so enjoyable. I never heard Ariana Grande so jazzy! I truly enjoyed it. Around 6:30pm a piano player began to play.Very enjoyable dining experience! Right next to the Neil Simon Theatre! Parking garages right across the street.I will definitely return and recommend to others!Covid-19 protocols: Vaccination proof and ID. Masks not required at this time!
Food here is okay, better places to get Russian food, but the piano was wonderful. Staff was great and the place was clean. The tables are a little close together. Flavored vodkas are worth a try. If youre in the area stop by.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ OUTSTANDING !!! My wife and I came here last night to celebrate our anniversary and we had an AMAZING time !!! We were greeted with a smile. The atmosphere and ambiance is just right. We felt as if we were back in Russia. The food was on point. We started off with their famous infused vodka shots and then tried some of their cocktails, LOVE !!! The staff are incredibly friendly. They made us feel welcome and entertained. The food was excellent !!! Everything was prepared fresh. We tried the traditional dishes, YUMMY !!! The band and music was just perfect. We left feeling great. Again, the atmosphere, the ambiance, the staff, the music, the band, the food --- Everything & everyone was excellent. This was our first time there and we cannot wait to go back !!! Our waiter was amazing !!!
This place is amazing. Im a regular here and it doesnt matter if you come here alone or with someone you are guaranteed a good time. Bartenders are amazing, especially Pasha (Pavel). Sweetest guy out there. Food is amazing and drinks are ridiculously strong. Just the way the Russians ordered.
Russian Samovar has every vodka infusion imaginable and they do it all in house. They have some funky ones like garlic but a good way to try them all is getting a vodka flight of 6 for $24, instead of $6 each. You can order a flight to be shared among friends. Have 4 or 5 (depending on your tolerance) vodka shots or vodka-infused shots and still feel functional the next morning. There is live music and piano playing on most evenings. It can get pretty lively later in the evening. Overall, its good great food and excellent quality vodka. Love the atmosphere and crowd here. Its a real one of a kind experience in New York, and close to Times Square. However, it tends to end up being pretty pricey with food and drinks and the coat check is mandatory and not complimentary.
Great little getaway in a the madness of the theater district. The food was amazing and tasted just like my grandmother would make , maybe even better. I had the borschtini to drink which was unique and had all the flavors of east block. Enjoyed the pilimini as an appetizer with plenty of sour cream. So good! I also love the play on words for Russian tea room. This place is more authentic and more charming. The live misic was also very delightful! This is in my top 5 favoritesin Manhattan!
This unsuspecting place, tucked away off 8th Ave and 52nd is an NYC gem. It is a reminder that even in 2022, there are still many old school NY places to be found and experienced. Its a flair of 80s-90s era NY with a taste of exquisite Russian cuisine. There is a wide selection of vodkas and cocktails available. If youd like to try multiple flavors try the flight of 5.We had the: Fish Platter, Vareniki, and Kasha & Mushrooms. It was the perfect amount of food for 2 people.- The Fish Platter comes with blini and has 3 styles of smoked or cured fish. It was very savory and fresh.- The Varenki was a good serving size for sharing, especially if getting additional plates.- The Kasha & Mushrooms was interesting. It was a smaller portion but the dish was hearty.
I have come here maybe 7 times over a few years. The food is always well prepared and high quality. Staff is always efficient. I typically have the duck, which I find hard to get good duck. Theirs is excellent.
Excellent authentic Russian food and great cocktails. Live music and dancing. Friendly service 😁
The food was good. Really delicious. We had blini with salmon, beef stroganoff, and chicken cutlets. Everything was delicious but my favorite was beef stroganoff! We also had a sample of different kind of shots, which was incredible. There was a live piano playing all the time and it was incredible. Especially I liked the girl who was playing- so soft and relaxing! I assign 2 stars because of the service and bathrooms. There was NO SOAP in the bathroom!!! And there was a sign that employs must wash hands - I wonder with what ???? So I assume the food was prepared with dirty hands 🤮. then, it took them forever to cook the meal (there were only 2 more tables besides us - less than 10 people total), serve that food, and even to get a money from us! When I walked into the waiters area to ask for the check because we were waiting for any waiter to show up for over 20 mins already, she was on the phone. And even after that it took her another 15 mins to the card swiped and returned to us. I hope they would fix the service and sanitation concerns!!!!!!!
Perfect perfect perfect!!! What else can I really say? I wanted a nice chill atmosphere with live music for my dads 60th birthday dinner with our giant family and came upon this place on the googler. Turns out the famed owner was a client of my dads shop pre-covid which was a nice surprise! Anyway regarding the important stuff like food and service, I mean everything was freaking delicious, from the herring, shuba and caviar to the mushroom potatoes, branzino and cornish hen! My pops is an extremely picky eater and most importantly he loved it. Dessert was soooo decadent-- side note my hubbs has been begging me to make chocolate kartoshka for a week now 😂 they even let us bring out a special cake my fam made for my dad! Service was EVERYTHING and really made the night what it was-- all the servers were on point and really nice- special thanks to them! And lastly, if you want some cool photos they have a really cool room upstairs so you can stunt on the gram 😎😁
ITS NOT OK !!!!!!we went with our family and a toddler to eat lunch, the food was delicious, especially the soup and salads! we started speaking Russian and ordering, the waitress Maria decided to speak English to us, although she understood what we were saying, and she answered our daughter in Ukrainian! I understand that there is a war going on in her country and it hurts her, but we came to a Russian restaurant and my child does not know Ukrainian, it is your choice Maria to work in a Russian restaurant! it was very uncomfortable
Interesting place with Soviet atmosphere of 60s. Nice friendly people and good Russian food. Not cheap
Do not get it on uber eats or podtmates!!! They gave me the smallest portions ever half full and didnt even put in the utensils?? $16 for khachipuri is 4 pices of dry bread ? 18 solanka is legit half empty, and wasnt really good!! Could not even add sour cream. They could not even put a full container of buckwheat what is the cheapest thing ever with $30 beef stroganoff. Overall outrageous delivery for the price.. no utensils or sauces once again. Just get sushi will end up more food for the price...
Sat at the bar for 10 minutes waiting for service and was totally ignored. don’t go to this dump. Russian Vodka Room across the street is WAY better. friendly service.
The place is wonderful, the musicians were very good, the food - not so much. I would say customer service should have some improvement. Would I visit that place again, probably not.
For any Russians living in NY this is a great place. Or if you just want to try out Russian cuisine. Great atmosphere, great for families and great location.
A nice restaurant. An iconic place for Russian speaking community in New York. The food was good.
I had a wonderful dining experience at Russian Samovar. The vareniki was cooked perfectly, and the borscht had a delightful blend of flavors. Our server was friendly and attentive, making sure we had everything we needed. The atmosphere was cozy, perfect for a night out. Overall, I felt it was worth the price, and I cant wait to come back and try the dessert!
Delicious food! I was with a group of six. We were seated comfortably, serviced quickly, and the food was prepared exquisitely. Not having had Russian cuisine before, we just ordered and sampled a bunch of appetizers. They were all mouth-watering! Can’t wait to go back the next time I’m in the city!
I got the 3 pirozhok (potato &mushroom, potato & onion, and beef) all were amazing. Their I had two of their signature drinks with their infused vodka, both were stiff and had great flavor. The live music was good too. Ill be back.
This place is wonderful! The dinner was perfect and authentic... The live entertainment was superb, and the staff was warm and attentive. another great Must when visiting NYC!
Arrived just after 5 on a Saturday and sat at the bar. They were booked at the tables. Same menu in both places. Service was quick and very friendly. Had the mushroom Vol-Au-Vent. It was delicious. Highly recommend.
Visited on NYE when they had only 3 servers for the whole restaurant. It was shameful service & costomers were so mad. We felt bad for those poor servers. They were trying their best but... Owners to blame.Food was amazing, really enjoyed beef stroganoff. Wonderful Ambience.
This was an excellent meal. Definitely go here before seeing a show. The Sola is a must have with a shot of horseradish vodka.
Friday night, come ready to eat excellent traditional Russian food and drink cranberry infused vodka. Plus, they have a wonderful Gipsy inspired dance duo and violinist/guitarist.
This place removes bad reviews. Had a terrible experience there last week and they removed my honest review !!
Great music. Food is average. The availability of mocktails was a pleasant surprise
This place was totally unreal. They have live music, amazing food, and enough unique vodka to euthanize an African elephant. This place is a must for any trip to New York.
I love this place the hospitality was amazing the vodka was delicious Im definitely coming back to this place definitely I recommend it to everyone
A cozy, unpretentious restaurant with good Russian food. Great service. Definitely coming back!
I’ve visited Russian Samovar a few times, and each visit has been an absolute delight. The restaurant offers authentic and delicious Russian cuisine, paired with excellent service. The live music in the evenings adds a special charm, making the experience truly memorable.Situated in the heart of NYC’s Theater District, this historic spot has hosted many distinguished guests over the years. I look forward to seeing the team continue their great work!
At a triple birthday celebration for good friends, I stuffed myself with all the delicious treats that were on the dinner buffet in the party room upstairs. The red lights was a little strange. Drinks were flowing along either the conversation. A little loud at times. Had a great time.
Cool bar.. very open space.. didnt try the food but drinks were pretty great. The staff is nice..
Loved it. Live music daily. Friendly staff. Great food.
Cozy restaurant that had great and polite staff. Food was exceptional! Both the duck and creme brulee were cooked perfectly. Definitely worth the money and the best restaurant I ate at while visiting NYC.
Great food! Live music!
Ridiculously overpriced for what it is. Left 200$ for a small and average tasting meal. Menu prices are actually higher at the restaurant than they show online. There was nothing fine about this dining experience, zero presentation effort either. We appreciate history, but cmon, 16$ for a small borscht without meat? Crazy. Never again. PS: washrooms leave much to be desired. There was no live music when we were there.
Great location, nice live music, great piano bar overall
Terrible food, all dishes were very salty, processed chicken. The music was good!!The place does require the renovation. Don’t bring NOT Russian-speaking people, this place is not a good representation of Russian food and quality.
Authentic Russian food and service. They had live music and dancing. The food was superb and the waitress was knowledgeable. This is a true piece of Russia in NYC.
The restaurant is called Russian samovar and has a policy of “everyone” being welcome, which implies everyone actually being welcome despite of whether you speak Russian or Ukrainian. That was extremely offensive when a waitress after asking our IDs, when our friend showed her a Russian passport, told him that she doesn’t even want to touch that. Wow, we’re in the US, obviously being highly affected by the war, not living in Russia anymore, opposing the regime , and getting that attitude. Very nice service, thank you so much!!!! Oh yeah, and also she forgot to bring out a soup for that Russian friend. Will never coming back again. The food was nice though
Authentic, delicious Russian dishes in an intimate, cozy restaurant with live piano music.
Love love love this place. My first time was in August and I kept coming back. They had music upstairs, good cool vibe. People were just there to have fun. It’s a good mix of people. Downstairs is more laid back. People sit around the bar and chat with the friendly bartenders. Always a good vibe whenever I come here. Their flavored vodkas are good and so unique, never had anything like it. Will continue to take friends here.
Wonderful food and glorious service. Some dishes tasted like home.
Great Russian food. Go with close friends!
The best for a night out. Great food fun drinks great bar tenders and stick around for the Friday night dancing! I always have a great time.
Shame. This place is a shadow of its former legendary self. Poor quality food, unmaintained space, and the worst service ruined my day. Find a better place to spend your money—it’s not worth the hype.
My wife and I have been wanting to visit this place for years but never seemed to make it. We finally came for an early dinner and were pleasantly surprised. The shashlik was unbelievably delicious, the best I ever had. The chicken was moist and tender with an amazing seasoning grilled into it. My wife had the branzino (fish) and loved it as well. My mother in law cooks amazing Russian cuisine. She has competition with Russian Samovar.
Nice atmosphere but too cramped. Barely any space between bar seats and tables. Beer price is way too high. $12 for a baltika 7 is crazy.
Last Thursday I visited Russian Samovar. There is no words to express my delight. The food was great. The waitresses made me feel like home, very friendly. But very special note for musician Andrey. His performance was amazing. He was able to play such a wide variety of music from classical to jazz in unique improvisational manner. Thank you for your hospitality!
I was glad to spend the evening here with friends! We had to wait about 1:20 for food which was a long time. The waiters speak Russian well, but not all dishes and drinks from the menu can be explained and presented correctly by them. Anyway, the food was hot and amazing. Beef Stroganoff, Kiev cutlet, mashed potatoes, honey cake😍❤️.Restaurant also open until late at night, which is also good if you decide to have a drink here and stay late.😅I recommend coming here with time to spare
The 1980s Soviet pop music playing when we entered got old real fast, since its basically the same few tracks on repeat, but the situation was soon remedied when live music started. Those guys were awesome, and they can render anything from Sinatras New York New York to Bernes Shalandy extremely well. Food was authentic and very good, although they were, understandably, shortstocked on the Russian beer. Would absolutely come back!
Kind of old worldy with red interior and pictures lining the walls. Food was delicious and service was excellent. Will go again.
The Russian Samovar is a cool bar. Im writing this review after going to a Russian LGBTQ event there. It was a really nice and enjoyable event, reminding me of good times in the past. I felt comfortable and at home. Ive been to that restaurant before and the food was really good. Its a fantastic place and always enjoyable. The staff, who are friendly Ukrainians, make it even better. 💛💙🫶🏻🎄
A wonderful piano player provides the background for this Russian Restaurant. Excellent service and a number of good choices from a menu of Russian cuisine makes for an enjoyable experience. The food, is not what it should be. The Beef Stroganoff, for example was served warm, not hot like it should have been. The restaurant is in a very good location for Broadway theater.
Atmosphere, food, and drinks were amazing. Waitstaff and hostess were the best. They gave my wife (and i) a great time for our anniversary. Shes russian and says the place is just the best. I took one star because the bartender wasnt the greatest. Kind of annoyed that we asked for a few things. Also, he had no change for a 20 to tip the piano player which is strange for a restaurant in Manhattan. Either way this place is definitely worth it.
This is the BEST authentic Russian restaurant! If you go on Friday night there will be a few gentleman playing instruments and singing traditional Russian songs. The food is delicious and so is the tea and dessert. If you want to experience how the Russians party this is a must! I do recommend making a reservation because they get filled quick.
While the restaurant and the menu are a good glimpse of Russian culture and heritage, the service leaves much to be desired for. Unfortunately understaffed and poorly managed. May not warrant the prices posted.
The evening was ruined. The service and attention were terrible. We waited for our order for over an hour, it seemed like they forgot about us and our ram ran around the mountains. And when they brought this mini leg with buckwheat, it was a pitiful sight. The drinks were completely ice and in terrible glasses! The waitresses pretend to be fools...
My husband and I came here for a delayed honeymoon dinner and had a wonderful time! The food was delicious, the atmosphere was very classy and the music was amazing! I even made a request for them to play the Cheburashka theme song and it was ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC!! We will definitely be back here again. I definitely recommend this place to all couples; new and old!
Best stroganoff you can ask for. Vodka selection is fantastic, so many homemade flavors. Cucumber vodka and soda is my favorite, but I have tried so many different flavors. Just get a flight and try them all 🤷♀️ will definitely go back often enough that they will get sick of me. Live Russian music is my jam.
Great place! As a fan of the TV series sex and the city, it was nice and delicious to visit here.
I had a quite unpleasant experience at this restaurant. We decided to try their infused drink, but unfortunately, it only smelled like cranberries and cherries and didnt live up to the taste we expected. The restroom situation was also disappointing: the facility is clearly in need of an upgrade, the sink was taped over, and there was noticeable dirt around. This is not what you anticipate from a venue that promotes itself as a cozy and quality spot. I hope the management takes note of these issues and makes improvements to enhance the experience for future guests.
Delicious food. Live music. Great service.
Delicious Russian food.
An extensive selection of infused vodkas are available individually or in flights. Try one. The atmosphere is excellent with live music when we visited. Food was good. Service needs work.
I was there for a friend’s birthday party. They had live music and dancing which was pretty fun! Food was also good.
Id like to echo others reviews in that I am not sure why people are bashing this place. I had a lovely and unfortunately brief visit. My attentive waiter, helped me to judiciously choose from several vodka options. He suggested that I pair it with the caviar blinis. I skipped the main course and went straight to tea and dessert. The portions were great and the atmosphere was luxe! On my way out my waiter asked the manager to bring me upstairs to see the Grand ballroom which was typically closed at that time of day. Wow what stunning grandeur. I cant wait to bring my husband back and sample the main courses!
5 stars isn’t enough I would gladly give this place 10 stars, food was amazing but the thing that stood out was the service are waiter Moon was phenomenal. Best service I’ve ever received in my entire life!
Baba AKA Moon is the heart of this place! We came into this restaurant to experience Russian cuisine and got so much more because of him. Much love from Texas!
The atmosphere is great, dimly lit with lots of fabric, soft lighting, live music, and low ceilings. Its cramped, and I like that for the most part except that old women would always be chatting in the aisle with their shopping bags, making it impassable. They are sturdy as well, unlike the vodka which seems like it settles at a soft 20-25% abv, making it hard to get drunk enough to start pushing them over. I did see one girl fall out of her barstool, so she found a way, but I polished off 2 carafes worth of cranberry vodka and I felt like I could have landed a plane safely. Perhaps she brought her own.Overall a solid experience. I would not recommend coming with a party of 15 like I did. Feels more suited towards intimacy. Also maybe get drunk before you come. 4 stars.
The restaurant and atmosphere was pleasant enough. The food was ok. Not bad, but no WOW factor. Although I will admit I loved the duck salad. I wish I could have been told they had a special event that night. While the entertainment was great, it played havoc with the wait staff. The bartender acted as my waiter. He was terrific. Very accommodating. Food prep was VERY SLOW. The owners would have done better to close regular business . I can be patient, but a 15 minute wait for someone to see and seat you(with a reservation) is inexcusable. Not sure Ill come back .
This is an amazing place to visit after catching a show – or a taping of the Late Show with Stephen Colbert! Great music, food, and service at this piano bar. Our server, Moon, did such a fantastic job taking care of us. Loved the delicious selection of infused Russian vodkas…try Plum!! Also, if you’re going to treat yourself to Russian caviar, do it here. We will most definitely come back on our next visit.
I honestly cant believe I have never been to Russian Samovar before now! Apart from the historic jazz setting of the restaurant, the drinks are absolutely to die for! 6 different flavors of infused vodka and the best Moscow Mules this side of Russia itself! I also had the salmon dish, which was so so fresh and flavorful I almost asked for a second just to bring home with me. Definitely a must visit spot in the Theater District!
Amazing food. Friendly service. Prices are a tad high but the food was worth it.
Food was OK, but piano bar was ear-splitting. We had to leave in order to be able to conduct a conversation. Prefer this place as a late-night, after hours haunt.
Great service, amazingly delicious закуски! Which is what I had. Nice selection of vodkas. Really nice people and music. My favorite was the TV playing old Russian cartoons all night long!
The food is good but portions are tiny. The service is really bad, they didn’t notice us for 20-30 mins and we had to always shout to get some attention. Just for martini we had to wait around 30 mins. The waiter also said that the minimum bill is 60 bucks per person. What??? Where this rule is coming from? Will never come back.
It was Delivery, overcooked.
Came here two times both days the restaurant was closed, not sure is it in operation. Google maps shows it is working.First time came at 5 pm second time at 2:30 pm.
Dining at Russian Samovar is like spending the evening with your dear and super culinary Russian bestie. There are cultural touches throughout that make a Russian feel at home and a traveler to exclaim, hey, is that...?!There is a good variety in food and vodka, so everyone can find something to enjoy about this little Russian haven. The live piano performer was incredible! Exactly what one needs to hear and feel when returning to our new normal.Make a reservation, because its so much easier and safer than booking a ticket to Russia!
One of my favorite places in the city. Its fun from a quick drink to spending the whole night here. Staff is friendly. They have gone out of their way to make space for me and my friends even on the busiest nights.Food and entertainment is great! And of course the infused vodka is delicious!I come here every time I fly back to the city.
Fabulous authentic food prepared by Ukrainian family!!Horseradish vodka to die for! Beef stroganoff, chicken Kiev, Shashlik ( double lamb chops) sour cream cake cherry dumplings, the Russian trio salad … everything was beautifully prepared and delicious! Lovely waitstaff!!
Nice place if u wanna Russian typical food. But, u need to know if u pay credit card this place charge additional 10%! It’s no good.
Had a great time, our server moon was incredible and the performers were great! love it here!
Cannot love this place more. Entertainment every night. So much fun. Warm, welcoming and delicious!Potato dumplings in mushroom gravy is a must!
My girlfriend and I never tried Russian food before so we decided to visit Russian Samovar Restaurant & Piano Bar a few days ago. I stared my night with an awesome Moscow Mule and later on, decided to try some of their flavored vodkas such as pepper, cucumber, peach and cranberry. I still cant decide which one is my favorite! For appetizer we shared the Tomato & Bryndza and Vinegret salads. For entree I tried the Chicken Kiev with mashed potatoes and a side of avocado, it was so rich! This place has it all: live music, great service, amazing food and the best vodkas. I had a great time and Im definitely coming back soon!
From the time I first learned of this restaurant I wanted to go. Yesterday, I was in the city and my feet brought me here. The ambiance was perfect for a pre theater dinner or just a peaceful moment away from the grind of the city. Prices for me, a non-city dweller, were higher than normal but I saw a menu for a pre fixe meal and went for it. I had what I thought was a traditional Russian meal which consisted of an appetizer of: Vinegret; Entrée of Beef Stroganoff, Dessert of Smetannik Cake and a Hot Russian Tea with whole cherry 🍒 preserves with lemon & honey 🍯 😋. It was a very tasty meal but for me i thought the portions were a tad small on the Entrée and dessert though at my age it was probably just right. The meal was extremely tasty with flavors I never imagined to be able to taste. The live piano music was just perfect for any reason that brought you here. My rating is low only because I expect more on my plate. Service was great and I love that it is a family run business that has its roots and traditions set in the Ukraine 🇺🇦 as well as Russian heritage. I highly recommend this restaurant for all the flavors and heritage they have brought to the United States 🇺🇸 of America.
Went for a jazz brunch after being absent from the venue for over 10 years. service went from being so-so to non-existent. a young girl, without much experience is trying to service 8+ tables. it takes 15 minutes to get an ice bucket for prosecco- after repeated reminders. the place is tired. musicians are fine, but they have nothing to do with the venue. stay away. no flavored vodkas can compensate for the underwhelming food and non-existent service.
Very bad food, unprofessionally packed, hearing under the fur was just thrown in a box without proper form, the salads like Olevie and venegret had a strange taste, borscht was decent but too oily. This is barely eatable food from quite pricey place. Probably good to loose weight since it didn’t taste fresh and often visits to the restroom should be expected after consuming it. 😂
Before coming here my only exposure to Russian cuisine came in the from of beef stroganoff by hamburger helper, there is no comparison. I went with large group for a holiday party and was able to sample many items i wouldnt have ordered or expected to enjoy. I was surprised at how many items i recognized and would have never thought to be Russian. My favorite of these were the meat filled grape leaves, potato salad and the salmon stuffed pastry. Another dish i really liked was the short rib, it was so tender I ate just using my fork.
Great place, kinda feel weird to be in a terrorist stat but still pretty good food
Awesome authentic Russian cuisine and vodka. Cant beat the ambiance, and included live music. Fantastic service!
Very unfriendly girl in the bar. I spoke Russian to her and when I asked where she is from she was very rude and responded did you come here to drink tea or ask me where I am from. As new to NY and very happy seeing someone who speaks Russian her mean and rude behavior made us leave. We will never go there nor we will advise our friends to visit. We didn’t feel welcomed.
One of my favorite places to go for special occasions !
Im sorry, but its a total disgrace to read certain reviews of this wonderful restaurant. I love all about it - music, food, environment.Im jewish and Im from Ukrane. But it was a part of a multicultural Soviet Union where most of us came from, and I respect all types of music - Russian, Ukrainian, Jewish, etc. This is America, not Russia nor Ukraine! Leave your political views and preferences outside, please!
Great experience. Authentic Russian food. Was there on a Saturday night, they had live music and many Russians dancing and having a great time. Extensive menu. Salo, borscht and Oliver salad. Great variety of Vodkas. Will definitely return, this is my new place in midtown.
Fabulous! We loved it. It was just perfect - great ambiance, fantastic service and delicious food an drinks. Everything we tried was wonderful - Ajapsandali, Country Borscht, Chicken Kiev, and the pineapple infused vodka. We will definitely recommend and return!
Recommended stop before or after a Broadway show. We decided to stop here before seeing Wicked. The Russian decor, the Russian service, and live music transported you to a Russian speak easy. The flavored vodka is a must try, we had mango and cucumber, both delightful and refreshing. Then we ordered a beer and white russian, delish! We only had appetizers since we were in a hurry, but made the right choice. We started off with two hot piroshki, one filled with with potato and mushroom and one filled with potato and onion, both exquisite. The warm flaky crust and soft potato center was a great compliment to a cold night. Three smoked fish platter served with warm blini with a dollop of sour cream when rolled up is the best combination of sweet and salty. The service was friendly and helpful. Prices were as expected for midtown Manhattan.
Amazing teas and vodkas. Food is heavy and didnt feel like a unique experience. Service is incredibly slow, forgot to bring one of our entrees so we asked to cancel and they refused. Wait staff is borderline rude.
Authentic Russian food 20 infused vodkas established in 1986.
Best place at NYC, for a Russian expireience!
I didnt eat but definitely drank quite a few vodka shots. Had a great time. Lots of fun for small groups. You may not remember what happened.
Authentic Russian food. Would be happy to see more non alcoholic drinks
Pretty authentic place and good service. Was here on a Saturday night and the place was pretty busy. All great!
Probably the best Russian food in the US, couldn’t recommend more especially medovik.
It was my first time at a Russian restaurant! Me and my friend went in for dinner. We started off with a very delicious appetizer, pickled vegetables. I choose the prawn and avocado salad as my main dish. My friend had the chicken kiev. I can definitely tell you in all honesty, both were like tasting a little piece of heaven. The food was cooked so well! I loved my salad and prawns. The avocado mix was very tasty and had a great flavour to it. The prawns were cooked with a delicious sauce/spices. The mashed potatoes with the chicken kiev, made it all come together. It was above our expectations. Nonetheless, the armosphere was wonderfull. Such a traditional look and the live music tied it all together. The choice for piano and a very nice chill band, made the experience even better. Last but not least, the fact that one episode of Sex and the city was filmed there was very exciting! I really liked Russian Samovar, I think we had a very very pleasant dinner! And I will most certainly go back soon!
Place with Russian Spirit and traditional food, but quite overpriced
Like many Russian restaurants , Russian Samovar is colorful but austere. I had the beef stroganoff and my lunch mate had the beef ribs. Just great! Located in the theater district , the evening business is their main stay. Lunch at 1:30 found the place empty.
Great place with fantastic food. Especially respect to bartenders. Cocktails they made are really cool. Highly Recommend to go there and enjoy your time.
First of all, what impressed me the most was the decoration and the history of this place (I have to thanks the owner of the restaurant for sharing the history of this restaurant, it was really interesting).During our visit we shared different plates, such as the Siberian Pelmeni , the Khachapuri as hot appetizers. Then I took the Braised Short Ribs which was really flavorous and perfectly cooked. As dessert, I took the Zapekanka which was a kind of cheese cake, it was definitely so good.To finish, we were given very good advise on what to drink, indeed the infused vodkas, which was really interesting and very flavorous. The service was good, and the waiters were very nice with us. I definitely have a good time there.
Love this place! Really makes you feel like you are in “authentic NYC”, every time I visit I feel transported in time. Since I first came here in 2013 their menu has changed a lot but recently they have returned to more traditional Russian dishes. Which is great!I love the live music also. This is one of those NYC must visit spots! If you are from Eastern Europe or ex USSR you will appreciate the nostalgia and all the memorabilia.
Great food, wait staff and atmosphere! Our table neighbors celebrated their 40th anniversary and the wait staff brought us all shots of cranberry vodka to celebrate! Very thoughtful!
Like the night time performance, loves the band and the dancers. Foods are great and authentic. A bit pricy but it’s worth to try at least once!
Pelmeni and Olivier were fantastic. The service personal was friendly. Ambiente: a little dark.
I had been there more than 5 years ago...prices on food are way too high, every menu item has increased by a minimum of $7-8 or more!!
Delicious Slavic cuisine. Excellent pelmeni, borscht, pod shuba, medevik, and shashlik.
When I want to come back to my home country I like to go to Russian Samovar it reminds me my hometown restaurants. Russian dishes are well prepared and very delicious. Of course the restaurants itlsef is little outdated but maybe it’s their concept. Service was good and waiter gave me a lot of attention.
The food is amazing, the decor is uniquely russian, and the service is ok. Absolutely worth the experience if youre looking for delicious and authentic russian food. Be careful if you go on nights with live music, the singing is uncomfortably loud.
Not for everyone, expensive menu.I love it because I am familiar with Russian food and music even though I am not Russian. They have live music and the food is amazingly delicious.
Excellent vodka bar... They have a restaurant but I havent eaten there. There is the Russian vodka room across the street that is a little more mainstream...I prefer this location much more. More authentic and less commercialized/crowded.
We came from Moscow last Thursday and decided to visit famous Russian restaurant in NYC. We ordered borsh and it was not good. Then our waitress was rude to me. She showed her attitude. I asked for the manager but he never showed up. Unprofessional stuff, not good and overpriced food. Bad experience.Не рекомендую данное место 👎🏾👎🏾👎🏾👎🏾
Unfortunately appetizer and salad weren’t fresh. We had to send the main dish back it was nothing close to shish kebab.
Stopped by for some drinks at the bar and they were great. Highly recommend vesper martini!
Great food, drinks and server (Moon). The vodka is so outrageously good. The pineapple is delicious! I highly recommend this place for a fun dinner.
This place us freaking awesome! Do yourself a favor & stop in for lunch or dinner. Tell them if youve never had Russian, they WILL guide you right! The service is 2nd to none, the food us amazing & the ambitious is wonderful. Check. Them. Out.
Had a good night but the waiting for a table (we did have a reservation but had to wait 45 mins for table) was chaotic and it did ruin what should have been a good night out with the team. Luckily the waiter Moon looked after us and got the night back on track. The rest of the staff were very disorganised. There are better Russian restaurants in Manhattan
Super fun vibe. Pickles were excellent. I’m giving a low rating because the caviar I had there was spoiled had mold, and will prob be sick for a few days feom the bite I had. Left a bad taste in mouth and Prob not going back.
This is one of my all time classic NYC places. The homemade vodka is incredible, I love the caviar and blini plate with lox and sturgeon. The best entree is the beef stroganoff, and the pelmeni are a Russian classic. The wait staff was not as informed about the menu the last two times I was there, and the pelmeni used to be served with an incredible spicy mustard and sour cream, which they dont do now, but request it, trust me.
One of my best dinning experiences located on 52st and 8th ave starts of loud with the live music and company but the food service and vodka and hospitality are the finest to offer. HIGHLY RECOMMEND
I had one of the worst service experiences of my year and walked out with my friends before ordering.
I’d like to start off by saying the food tasted great until the next day when I was stomach sick from the ‘pelmeni with potatoes’ that I had. In addition to that, I’d like to say we had the worst restaurant experiences of our lives due to very poor service. Let’s start off by the fact that my husband, our 2 kids and myself walked in at exactly 5 pm on a Saturday night. We were NOT greeted at the door. Being unsure what the procedure was, we walked past the bar towards the seating area standing watching servers chit-chating with each other. My husband proceeded towards one of them and asked if we should seat ourselves or will we be directed to a table. Only then did one of the personnel directed us to sit down at an empty table, however, instead of ‘our apologies’ we heard ‘just to let you know we close at 8.’ Not sure why this was mentioned with the harsh tone as we were not even thinking of spending 3 hours at dinner with the family. As we sat for quite a while, a server came by without asking began pouring from a pitcher what I later found out was tap water. I expressed politely ‘no thank you but would rather like a large bottled sparkling water such as Pellegrino.’ A good while passed before anyone came by and asked if we were ready to order I said yes ‘borscht’ but the server than jumped away before I had a chance to ask/say anything else. My children were asking for juice at this point my husband getting more aggravated has called over the waitress virtually screaming ‘excuse me’ over the piano playing was useless as NONE came by. When they finally came by with the ‘borscht’ quite some time later my husband asked ‘what kind of juices do you have?’ to which the server replied ‘I don’t know let me ask.’ Just to sum up with EVERY question we have asked i.e. do you carry Malbec, do you have specials, what are your available sides, etc. the same server replied ‘I don’t know let me ask.’ Needless to say we finally placed our order which took OVER 1.5 HOURS before receiving it. While we were waiting another server came by quickly and proceeded to pour tap water from his pitcher into my glass half-full with Pellegrino with the actual bottle pretty full still standing in front of me. Of course I stopped it at the point when the waters were mixed. At $7 a bottle I was pretty disgusted and upset as how that was handled. At no point did anyone come by from management or service to apologize or check in if everything was ok considering the prices were absolutely unjustifiably too high and to walk away this disappointed this place receives less than 1 star if yelp allowed it. VERY POOR experience - we will NEVER come back!!!
Authentic menu. Great beer. Generous pours. We had the Marinated Wild Mushrooms, hand-made Pilmeni (dumplings), and Chicken Kiev (fried chicken) with fried potatoes. My Grandmother-in-law would approve.
When New York city and Moscow meets in a common ground you have a Russian Samovar. Fantastic restaurant in Manhattan playing jazzy live music from Sinatra to jazz chilout. The food is truly delicious and authentic. All the classics from the Russian cuisine are on the menu. The ambient is causy and the staff very friendly. A must stop in New York for a few vodka shots and pilmieni.
I visited on 3 occasions, and it is really fantastic. Highly recommend.
It maybe nice in the evening with live music, but not recommended for lunch. Very expensive for the quality of the food. $28 for a trio of salads with small portions is way too much.
If you enjoy over priced food and minimal service, this would be a great place to visit. Ideal for Masochist who enjoys no attention and paying hefty for two pieces for potato at the cost of $18.00. Music is there, however, the lady how plays it seems quit entry level learner. I think “Onegin” at Greenwich village is much better in terms of value proposition and quality proposition.
First time in a Russian bar and it was great, Im only giving 4 stars as the tasting vodka was awful! But still it was a nice experience. Its a bar for the whole family, they have a band playing the piano and the violin, they were great and the vibe was is amazing. Totally worth a try.
Amazing vibe and infused vodkasGreat live music as well…Definitely deserves more than 4.3 stars
Specific restaurant...more history and reputation. Food is ok, attentive staff, everything looks a little old..nothing special except music. Live music was great. If I will come again, only for next performance.
Not my favorite place. I was trying to find some good Russian food and this place just wasnt what I thought it would be. That Monsieur entitles also kind of gloomy and dull. I ordered there sweet and sour vareniki, and for $18 you get a small handful.
Food was delicious, nice live music and great service!
Might be my favorite place in NYC. I’ve been visiting for years. The vodkas are awesome, the people are wonderful, the vibe feels like home. Live music is always a treat.I’ve met a lot of great bartenders here over the years, tonight Herman took it over the top. Favorite bartender in NYC!I usually visit for drinks but we had the duck salad tonight and it was delicious!!I hope this place stays just the way it is forever. ❤️
Great place to have infused vodka. Very authentic Russian bar. Definitely recommend anyone visiting NYC to stop at this place. When my wife and I are in town, we make a stop here.
Wonderful experience with delicious food, a wide variety of flavored carafes of vodka, live authentic Russian music, and a phenomenal waiter who truly loves being of service to his customers.
Awesome authentic Russian place with great atmosphere and entertainment. Great food and drink menu.
I was craving for some borscht, so I ordered it via Uber eats. The soup was great BUT I didnt find a piece of meat there, and I find it bizarre to have borscht without meat.
The food was tasteless and very stale. Definitely was not fresh at all.
We were visiting NYC for the weekend and decided to have dinner at Russian restaurant. We had a lunch which we really enjoyed. My friends had duck with apples and lamb “shashlyk” with russian style fried potatoes. I had baked black cod with some veggies. Omg we loved everything! Definitely would go back next time! Also they have live jazz music in the evenings. Unfortunately I don’t have any pics of food but trust me everything was perfect;)That place reminded restaurant from old Russian movies with samovar tea and friendly environment.
Third time here and every time super satisfied!Everything ia amazing! Thank you!
One of New Yorks hidden gems. This places authentic and traditional Russian vibe is added to by its amazing piano and vodka infusions. Their horseradish martinis are tops!
My husband and I celebrated our Wedding Anniversary here. We had so much fun! Fantastic food, great atmosphere, great service.
SO FREAKING GOOD! BEST beef stroganoff Ive ever had! Great drinks!
It may be awkward to walk into a restaurant with Russia in the name but while Samovar pays homage to the art and music history of Russia it is pro Ukraine. The blue and yellow flag are displayed inside and out. The bar and living room are cozy and warm. The pianist makes it even more inviting. The food and vodka are excellent. Definitely recommend the Chicken Kiev.
The food is wonderful and the atmosphere is perfect. The drinks seemed to be a little heavy on the vodka, which I also liked.
This was my first time eating here before I went to see a play and ate off of their pre-fixe menu. I got an appetizer of eggplant caviar, borscht soup, roasted duck for dinner and sour cream cake for dessert. All the dishes were very yummy and filling and there was also a piano player for entertainment. I would definitely come back to this restaurant again.
Classic old city feeling- can’t get enough. Sasha is our favorite :)
Outstanding restaurant with authentic food coupled with excellent staff.Looking forward to returning soon.
Love the place has a piano player good drinks and food
If youre looking for traditional Russian dishes in a comfortable setting definitely try Samovar. They also have a private space and dining area upstairs for private events.
Unbeknownst to us, we came here during the Russian orthodox Christmas (and someones birthday). The live music was very good. The violinist in particular was fire. The service was quite good. Our server, Moon, demonstrated true Russian hospitality by making our salmon crepes for us. The food was pretty decent as well. The bread was warm and the butter was cold and square. The borscht was delicious and the house smoked salmon was special. The main course was quite good and very large in size. It was very much so enough. The night ended with some tea with cherries fresh from any Russian train while watching tone-deaf drunks take advantage of the karaoke. It was like traveling back to the motherland.
Service and food was horrible!!!! Dirty dishes staing on the table for 30 minutes and no one care, waiting time for orders was about 30-40 minutes and when we finally got our food it was already dried. Rediculously expensive food&drinks and lazy staff who is trying to add taxes even for service charge and asking for 20% tips!!!!! Never again, never!!!!
Great place !
This place is a blast. The pianist was terrific and Alex, our waiter was exceptional. Loveeeee their chicken kiev!!!
Great atmosphere, delicious food, and great entertainment. Especially the Sunday Jazz Brunch.
Havent tried the food yet, but come here if your in the area for a show for some great homemade flavored vodkas by the pitcher
Moon was an excellent server. So attentive & listened to exactly what we ordered. Checked in on us repeatedly to see if everything was to our expectations. Would definitely recommend. Ask for Moon.
Professional service, great martinis, some of the best blinis I’ve had. This is a great option if you’re catching a show in the area. The atmosphere is very sexy and old school.
Celebrated a friends birthday. Live music. Really good. Good is fantastic, but slow. Be prepared to sit and enjoy each others company.
It was a cold April evening. I wanted some hot soup, asked the waiter for the soup to be hot, but it was brought warm.It seemed that the guests were divided into expensive and not very expensive, it depends on what you order and drink alcohol or not. Bad experience
Great drinks. Fun casual atmosphere and loved the piano bar. Good time. Well be back.
Authentic Russian food. Food, staff, attentiveness, drinks etc was above par. Love the Molotov cocktails! Drinking fire. Bad picture.
Perfect place for super tasty food, nice atmosphere and drinks!Had a Gypsy dance show on SaturdayМесто СУПЕР!!! Очень рекомендую
This is a well hidden gem right in the theater district. Definitely be prepared to spend decent money here, but a great treat for us when we stay in the city for some shows over the weekend. The food is delicious and fresh. Fantastic selection for vodka drinkers - we tried dill infused and horseradish infused vodka which was great. Food is very filling so we want to come back and try items we didnt get to. We had a lovely waitress and loved the live pianist who kept a lovely mix of old Russian favorite, cartoon melodies from my childhood, and even Frank Sinatra going all evening. We will definitely be back!
Loved it here. Everything, from the excellent service to the atmosphere and performance (😍) , food and the infused vodka omg. Everything was excellent and enjoyable. Let me elaborate: first the infused vodka is really infused. Not just color or taste added, but really infused which gives it a real source taste. Second the food feels fresh and good. The service is very good and the performance of the dancers 😍 and the band is excellent and completes the whole 5 stars atmosphere. Yes yes and da 😄 . Recommend.
Excellent customer service! German and Miles were amazing and made this one of our fav stops in NYC. The drinks and food were also delicious.
Best Russian restaurant in a town ! Food , music and atmosphere are absolutely amazing !Highly recommended a duck and Medovik 🤤🤤🤤 thank you so much for your service 🙏🏻
Good vodka infused drinks.
Went here after seeing Dave Atell and Jeff Ross at Caroline’s. Surprisingly good. Horseradish vodka shot was good.
One of my favorite places to eat, vodka, Russia cuisine. Music all atmospheric experiences. Wow.. even Sunday was...something different.
Great spot for dinner before a show. The beef stroganoff is great and the infused vodka martinis are dope.I like the horseradish vodka
Super-nice staff, authentic food, good live music, perfect atmosphere.
This place knows how to treat their customers. Always with a kind mindset. The food is fairly priced, always delicious and clean.
Pretty good quality food, service is outstanding and they had some live jazz.
