This is an AWESOME speakeasy style spot with excellent service and amazing cocktail creations, BEFORE 830ishpm. I went a few times around 630-7pm and had excellent service and the cocktails the bartender created for me were amazing, and she was the same bartender the few times I went earlier in the evening, so it was really nice to be able to say “I want a gin or vodka based spirit forward cocktail with a botanical element” and get a new creation each time that I absolutely loved and found really interesting nuances and complexities in the drink! When I went to take a friend at 11pm to try it the bar was blasting music so loud over the speakers that you couldn’t hear what anyone was saying and on top of that the bartenders working later on had no idea what a botanical element was then further clearly had no idea how to balance a cocktail if it saved their lives. The “spirit forward” cocktail they gave me was just like they poured gin and vodka together into a shaker to get it cold before they put it into the glass, then they garnished the glass with a lemon, and thank gawd they knew enough to zest the rim of the glass first so at least I got a hint of lemon with my rubbing alcohol. Absolutely terrible, and it made me so embarrassed that I told my friend how great this bar was from my experiences I had before. Clearly there’s a huge consistency issue and they favor quantity over quality the later the night gets. Very sad.

Perfect date night spot!Drinks: Great cocktails! There is something for everyone on the menu and everything is creative and has an interesting/unique twist on a traditional drink. This is definitely a cocktail bar and the bartender spends a lot of time individually crafting each drink ordered.Ambiance: Dark, romantic, and hidden away. The downstairs is mainly standing room only but there is a bench on the far wall where you can sit and talk. You order at the bar and there is only 1-2 bartenders so it can take a little longer to get your drink. Upstairs is table service so if you prefer to sit and order and maybe have a few small bites to eat, you can have a table upstairs.Overall: A great date night hidden gem in Murray Hill. We would definitely go back when we want a pre-dinner or post-dinner cocktail in that neighborhood. I love that it is hidden away (you have to actively search for the small sign) and that it was full but not overly crowded.

Great, cozy, speakeasy in the city! Ive been to speakeasies before and they are usually too crowded and crazy for me to enjoy them. Middle Branch was crowded but I didnt feel like it was overwhelming.Although I got wine the night i was there, I watched the bartenders make the drinks and they know what they are doing here. They take the time to craft a good cocktail and that was apparent just by watching them while I waited to order.Definitely a great place to hang out with friends or go in a date.

He handcrafted a cocktail with flavors I like and even found a bottle of nice sake since I mentioned that . Personal and personable service! I had 1 cocktail and tried other 3 from my friend. All of them were sublime, each with its own character evolving from previous one. Tommy is real pro! Will love to come back again when in area!

The bartender was clearly experienced and very neat, but the cocktails were always slightly off. For example, my warm cocktail felt slightly overly watered down. Theres standing room at high top tables and the bar and seats along the wall in the basement. Theres a bathroom under the stairs and table service upstairs on the ground level floor. The room isnt enormous but if you came in with a large group, youd look like you booked the room. To enter, you head down to the basement, so there is no wheelchair accessible entrance.

This place is a little gem hidden in Murray Hill. We arrived shortly after dinner and almost couldnt find the front door because its so well covered...Which is part of the appeal of the place.Theres two levels: Upstairs seating and lower level standing. I suppose you could choose either area to be but I prefer sit down catch up time with good friends. They do a terrific QUEENS PARK SWIZZLE and Im completely addicted to their CANDIED GINGER! I assume its house made so its worth ordering a drink with a candied ginger attached to the lip. They make a house made GINGER BEER as well so you should try that in one of their mixed drinks. Price of drinks is slightly below average at $12 and the drinks have a kick! Whenever we have friends in town this is definitely one of the stops we like to make. P.s. If you go to the bathrooms, check out the floor decor... Very cool!

Bar with a very speakeasy vibe, major focus on cocktails and occasional live jazz. The cocktails are quite good and the barmen knowledgeable, but they come with quite a price tag ($18 a pop), and while they do offer other drinks at (barely) more affordable prices, the only menu available at the table is exclusively composed of cocktails. Ask for other things but expect unhappy faces, same as if you ask to split the bill (can only be split by two btw). Also the place has been closed for a couple of years, which may explain why they keep the door open and music loud to attract patrons. Only problem is that when its freezing outside this makes the interior cold and loud, which is not what one usually looks for in a speakeasy. Might be back for the jazz and occasional cocktail when Im feeling fancy, but thats about it.

Found this quaint speakeasy on a whim by searching online en route from another bar to the subway. We were in the mood for high-end cocktails, and man, did they deliver. I ordered a bartenders choice with the descriptor phrase spicy...give me a kick. The waiter responded with a can you handle tequila? and I nodded in affirmation. What arrived at the table within a couple minutes was one of the best drinks Ive had in ages: The Tequila Torchlight? Forgive me if I botched the name as I had to have another. My friends provided similar feedback to their cucumber infused gin fizzes. The music was 1920-40s and not too loud, allowing for good conversation. I will definitely return when the weather is warmer and the waiters open the doors (windows) to allow for a cool breeze.

Very disappointing to write a bad review about a place that actually does have a great menu. I came here with a friend exactly a week ago - it wasnt busy so the service was ok. We started noticing that everyone around is starting to complain that they are not receiving the drinks that they ordered. We then see the bartender starting to stumble over his feet as he is walking. We ask for our $52 bill to be split in half and when our cards come back, my card has already been swiped for a $34 and change but and my friends card has been swiped for our entire $52 bill. When we bring this up to the bartender he looks confused and we are immediately approached by someone else telling us they are sorry but that bartender is drunk and had to get off the floor. Honestly, I dont care...who is going to return my $34 bill so I can just go home? Apparently NO ONE. They couldnt undo the transaction, took my email info quickly saying they will contact me when its been done AND STILL NO RESPONSE. I have now called 3 times, and all 3 times they say there is no manager and they will get to it. I gave them 3 chances to redeem themselves before I write this, but they absolutely have no urgency to make easy things right, and customer service is at the very bottom of their priority list.

As a typical speakeasy, the drinks are expensive, the ambiance is dark with dimmed lights, there are lines to get a seat, and no sign on the door that this is the bar. Its loud but the music isnt overpowering your conversations, which is a plus, but theres not much place to stand on the first floor - you feel like youre standing on top of each other. The upstairs, if youre willing to stand around and wait in line, has a good amount of seating, but you do end up sharing a table with other people if theres just the two of you. Those who want to wait for a table are corralled into a downstairs area thats standing room only - are bar stools suddenly out of fashion? From the doorman who takes his job way too seriously and practically threw me down the stairs for trying to get a glympse of the upstairs to the bartender, sorry, I mean mixologist who had all the personality of a wet turnip, the service at Middle Branch is not going to impress. The drinks are very good though you wont find anything unique here compared to every other speakeasy. The atmosphere is not that great, particularly downstairs where you have to stand at an awkward height table and the music prevents any conversation. We were told by the doorman a table for us upstair would be ready any minute but gave up waiting after 3 hours. Our party all described different tastes we wanted for our drinks but everyone ended up getting either a ginger mule or some daiquiri looking thing. For all the flair of their mixing technique, the bar tenders need to improve their repetouir. Drinks were however, fairly affordable at only $12 this close to midtown. No food to be found though.

The place is small and dark to add to the secrecy. There is also no food and the cocktail menu is limited. With that said, its a great place to hang out for drinks after work or to drink before going to a restaurant for food. The bartender also can make custom drinks depending on what you like. Two of my friends tried the Bartenders Choice and it was pretty much vodka and juice for the same price as teh other cocktails lol. But they were cool with it and ended up ordering more drinks.

Facility looks nice. However, we were greeted very unfriendly and the bartender didnt tell us where we could sit down. Maybe the bartender was just having a bad day. We were able to enjoy the hospitality right next door.
