The staff were friendly and helpful. We had a corner suite so plenty of space and a separate bedroom which was great as 4 of us sharing. The sofa bed was big, but pretty awful to sleep on as had a bit dip in the middle. Fortunately we were so exhausted after waking around the city all day, we didn’t notice too much. Our bathroom was very dated and the velour soft furniture quite stained. The iconic neon sign was never lit for our entire 4 nights. Also the rooftop bar is a separate establishment. There are no bathrooms or bar in the lobby. The gym was clean and well equipped. The pool was closed so didn’t get to see, can’t comment.Overall enjoyed our stay and suited our needs.
I typically don’t leave reviews, but really felt it was necessary to share my feelings on our experience. The staff were wonderful, professional and friendly, however we were really disappointed with the rooms. We found cockroaches in our room two nights in a row which is just dreadful. Secondly, for $400 a night we thought we would have more amenities like water in our fridge, coffee makers and coffee in the rooms, softer bath towels and a newer room. For the price we paid surely coffee and water should be included. The door in the bathroom was eaten up and peeling at the bottom, and the shower curtain was so short that water got all over the floor of the bathroom. Just all around we feel for that price we needed a little more. Also, the heat in the bedroom didn’t work very well, it would work sometimes and other times not.Food at the Empire Rooftop is also very expensively priced. The noise at night is also not great, very noisy both outside and inside the hotel, you can hear your neighbors sneeze! I enjoyed the staff but the rooms weren’t great at all.
I recently stayed at The Empire Hotel in New York with two others in a room with two queen-sized beds. The location is fantastic—you can walk to Central Park and Times Square in about 15–20 minutes, with buses right in front and the Columbus Circle subway nearby. The staff were friendly, there’s a Starbucks conveniently downstairs, and the Metropolitan Opera House is right next door. Free water at reception as much as you want and quick ice delivery to the room were nice touches. However, the room was quite small for three people, and the thin windows let in a lot of street noise all night. The air quality in the room wasn’t great—very dry and stale even after opening the window. There was no shower curtain on the first day, and, unfortunately, we encountered cockroaches in the bathroom twice.Overall, while the location and staff were definite highlights, the room’s comfort and cleanliness left much to be desired. A decent stay, but there’s room for improvement.
I can only say it was a great hotel, the rooms could be improved but there is so much to do in NY that you dont spend a lot of time in your room. A big compliment to all the staff who are always polite and courteous. Special mention must be made of Toni, the man at the elevator to the roof top bar, with his empathy, help and absolutely terrific manner it was always a pleasure to enter the hotel. Thank you Toni! Greetings from Berlin Christian
We were a little worried after reading reviews for the Empire Hotel. However, we LOVED our stay. Everyone at the hotel was kind and friendly. Our room was perfect. We had the two double bed, superior room. It was perfect for the family. The location is great too. We could have walked to most of the sights, but the weather was cold during our stay so we grabbed a car occasionally. It’s a block from our main event, which was the Nutcracker. It’s a block or two from Central Park. It was a short walk to Times Square and 5th Ave. All around, it was a wonderful NYC experience based out of the Empire Hotel.
We had a double bed room, there was no walking space in the room, and the bathroom was extremely small. even for 2 people it was really hard to move.front desk is friendly and hotel is beautiful in the lobby area. roof top bar which is convenient. location is lovely right near a couple subways and central park. next to lincoln center ! wouldn’t stay here again because of the room size but it’s fairlypriced
We stayed at The Empire Hotel for the week of our wedding. When checking in we were pleasantly surprised to find out that weve been given a complimentary room upgrade. The room (and the hotel as a whole) was gorgeous and clean. The dresser and closet were on the small side but we made it work. The free water is a big plus, many hotels charge for bottled water, but you can just go to the front desk and ask for some. All of the staff were so so friendly and always showed a smile. As a gossip girl fan, I had to go to the roof and try the namesake drink as well as take in the BREATHTAKING views. This hotel is in such a fabulous location that you can get to anywhere you need. Not even a 10 minute walk to central park and 30 minutes to reach practically anywhere by sub. It is surrounded by some of the most delicious bars and restaurants! (We highly recommend Joannes). All in all our stay was so magical. Thank you, Empire, for playing such a big part in making our wedding so memorable, stress free, and stunning.
Great location for attending The Met. Beyond that, I cannot recommend this hotel. The front desk receptionist gave off a ‘I hate working here vibe.’ No friendly greeting, no chit chat, no smile. The room, number 808, not good. The a/c system was uncontrollable. Could either be on cold (and then after about 20 minutes, the fan started making a loud racket) or hot and steamy (literally eyeglass lens steamy) could not turn it off. (The second pic is the rusty a/c grill.) There were no seating chairs, no dresser, NO coffee pot (huge turn off.) the shower stall had a crack from one end to the other. This was a two night overstay for two and for $1200 I think better room accommodations would be in order. I rate this hotel below The W on Times Square (which was pretty bad itself.) I’ve been to literally 100s of hotels and can honestly say, this stacks up one of the worst.
The pictures are legit fake! This place is run down! AC doesn’t work. Our room was 78 degrees. So was our friends, this is in Jan! Room was disgusting - unlivable. So bad, we changed hotels the 2nd night. While the staff are super accommodating and kind and location is superb, the hotel itself should be shut down. You’ll see shower leaking in bathroom, dirty couch, stained desk. Do not stay here.
The Empire Hotel was great for our trip. We literally left each morning and came back each night. We weren’t visiting to hang out in our room. Bottled water at front desk whenever needed. Several restaurants and coffee shops right around the corner. Subway is super close and so is Central Park. Yes; the rooms are small. It’s NYC - what do you expect? Bathroom was small but fine.Maps available at the front desk. Lobby entrance was fun. Rooftop bar was eh. Pretty pricey, but it’s good to go once. There is a Target close by. Get supplies there if you want - Cokes, etc.Taxis waiting at the front if you needed one.We would stay again!
My stay at the Empire was wonderful! its a gorgeous old place, perfectly situated, and very well kept up; spotless, and manages to be both retro and modern. It has an attitude, but the staff does not! Every employee I dealt with was friendly, cheerful and helpful. My room was tiny, but cozy and comfortable. If I make it to NYC again, will definitely plan to stay here again! :)
We recently stayed at this hotel after Christmas. We were given an ADA room which we did not need. The heat was not working and we asked 4 times for it to be fixed. It was 60 degrees when we arrived and 79 degrees when we left. There was wall paper peeling, torn carpet, and one of the lamps had a broken base. The lobby smelled of cigarette smoke. Not impressed and DO NOT recommend!!
We stayed one night and arrived extremely late, but the staff was great and accommodating. Book directly with the Empire Hotel on their website and you can get a reduced rate plus a late 1:00pm checkout. The code is DIRECT to save you the trouble of looking for it when you are at the booking page. The room we had was small, but its New York, so its actually quite spacious in relative terms. The place was clean and I love the decor, but its a bit past its prime and could use some new furnishings and window coverings that you can actually open instead of the Roman Shades without a pull cord and splines that are falling out of it. Absolutely would stay again, but there is room for improvement given the cultural history of the Empire Hotel.
There was NO access to the rooftop lounge when I wanted to check it out. It is not part of the hotel despite the hotel advertising. While the location was great for my purpose, it is a very old hotel in need of many repairs. Cudos to the person who took the photos for the website. They made it look a LOT better than it actually is.
This “hotel” is an extremely overpriced hostel in disguise. Our “junior suite” priced at over 500$ a night looked just like a regular room, with the addition of an armchair and desk. The room felt outdated, dirty, and in need of serious repair. The room was not soundproof and we heard the slamming of doors daily starting at 6:30am, in addition to the sound of dogs barking. The hallway reeked of cigarette smoke. We noticed the first evening that the radiator wouldn’t work. When we reported this, they sent a maintenance person to look at it twice, who insisted it was working despite the room being cold and no hot air coming out. We eventually gave up and requested a space heater. The third day, my key card stopped working. I had to wait in a long line of people checking out to get it remedied. The “hotel” charges a “resort fee” despite the pool being closed for the season, and the gym in the basement smelling like very musky mold.Lastly, on my second to last day, I asked the front desk if the card that booked the reservation could be charged for the nights. I was told that it would be no problem, and was instructed to let the person at check-out know to swap out cards. When I checked out at 4am the next day, I was told they couldn’t switch the payments since I didn’t have that card present, and was coldly told that the previous employee simply gave the wrong info. The only reason this “hotel” is popular, is because of location. For 1700$+ for 3 nights I could have stayed anywhere else in the city and had a better experience. Recommend avoiding at all costs.
The room was clean but very small, with also very small bathroom. The heating system was broken, wires coming out of the controller; so we weren’t able to control the heating - it was too called for me at 68 deg F. Both of our keycards had to be replaced/fixed 4 times in 2 days - which was very annoying. No coffee in the room nor the hotel. The hotel doesn’t have any restaurant, but there is on next door. Also, there are 3 coffee shops within 5 min walking distance. But the location was great - 3 min from metropolitan opera and 7 min away from subway.
I brought my daughter for her 15th birthday and she picked this place because she watched gossip girls and expected a good experience and this place is a big dump.-Bathroom had hair on the sink and is so tight, it can’t fit a trash can and does not have a fan- Does not have a smart tv to connect Netflix or prime- hotel doesn’t resemble anything in gossip girls even though it’s its claim to fame- rooftop bar doesn’t have good food
The shower was broken so I couldnt take one, Theres absolutely no tea or coffee making facilities in the room - not even a kettle. The bathroom doesnt have ventilation so the door was peeling. Paper thin room, constant noise from the street. All of this for $500+The only good thing about this hotel is its proximity to the Lincoln center, which is convenient if youre watching a late night performance. But Id rather take a metro than stay in this hotel again.
Was so disappointed. Expected more based on the reviews I read. Room is SO tiny. Couldn’t even fit a pack and play. It’s so dirty we wouldn’t even let our kids be barefoot bc the carpet felt so icky. Furniture is so dated and seems like it’s from a cheap store. Bathroom also just felt dirty. Overall just upsetting. Pictures look much different and reviews are shocking for what we experienced.
My hotel room was dark and cramped. I couldn’t open the curtain to let light in, because there was no way to lift up the shade and keep it up, and the bathroom was so awkward that you couldn’t close the door once you walked in unless you stepped into the shower, which wouldn’t be such an issue, except that the toilet paper was behind the door. The bed was lumpy and uncomfortable. The lobby and staff were nice, and free water was truly helpful, and the rooftop bar had good drinks. The location was really great, right next to the park and the Columbus Circle subway stop, which had access to lots of different trains. Overall, the room was terrible but everything else was good.
Great location. Smaller lobbies, teeny tiny rooms, old school noisy and cranky Air conditioners. I gave credit to the photographer of the swimming pool. On the hotel’s profile page, it sounds like a fancy, Olympic size swimming pool. However it is nothing more than a Wag-n-Splash. I booked in to this hotel via the official Hotel tonight site. Sadly none of the accommodations and amenities stated in the booking site matches to my experience at the hotel. The booking site should review whether those accommodations stated in its page about the hotel are simply a bunch of lies or legit before advertising and selling it to their customers. That will undermine public trust in the booking site. I’ve tried to contact the booking site to consider for a partial refund, but they simply ignored all my questions. Not a good experience both with the hotel and Hotel tonight booking site.
Absolutely great location for sightseeing, and going either up or downtown. Great food right there and desert next door. Visit roof top deck too. I had no issues with the room. It was well maintained and very comfortable. Not alot of services from the staff but its NYC and this is an affordable room. They were perfectly professional and friendly. Go there. You wont be sorry.
I stayed on the 15th September 2024.The only reason I booked the hotel was because I thought that there was a rooftop pool. Unfortunately the pool was closed. Warning for people coming from Europe it seems to be standard in New York: Outdoor pools are only open from Memorial Day weekend (late May) to Labor Day weekend (early September). Thats even if the weather is great later in September (seems like a very silly system to me)...The room was very small (even for a single room) and the bathroom too. The price was absolutely ridiculous: $327 a night. Absolutely abysmal value for money. That is why it is getting such a low rating.
This hotel isnt fancy. But if youre looking for a decent place with a great location, that it absolutely is. The staff were always very friendly. And the location... Did I mention that? Its great! I had no problems getting around to see what I wanted to see. That includes a major subway stop a couple of blocks away. I would stay here agsin and recommend it to friends. (Note: I never went to the deck, I was busy going about the city instead. The pool is small according to some reviews. That was zero issue for me, on loudly.)
Cold and noisy aircon made the rooms very uncomfortable. Theres no coffee making facilities or much beyond a comfy bed and good shower. The reception man was rude. Plus they took a surcharge which hasnt been refunded hotel policy. Find yourself a youth hostel and enjoy your New York experience more
After staying here several times through the years because the combination of location, price, and service kept me returning, I will not return. This hotel has really let itself go. I lived in NYC for 10 years and return regularly, I’m well aware of the particulars of hotel stays in the city and what to expect: small, lower standards of cleanliness, noise, vintage infrastructure. I got a room that was really not worth the price and the location. Froze the first night, despite asking facilities to come and check heater (they did promptly, but it didn’t work and it didn’t kick in when the outer temperature reached the level required). Next morning I requested again they checked. They didnt or didnt fix it. I came back late and asked for an extra blanket on my way up to prepare for the event of another freezing night without heat, they didn’t send it up either though they said they would. I collapsed in exhaustion but still woke up cold and next day felt sick and sniffling and left the city. The window curtains were not blackout curtains and didn’t even close properly, were placed over the heating ac unit so even if it worked it wouldn’t matter because one has to choose between closed curtains or ac/heat, the hair dryer was broken, everything smelled suspiciously stale and musky, humid, and the surfaces, carpet, and bathroom floor were beyond gross: dusty, stained, sticky. The folk at the front desk are always nice but either it doesnt translate into action or acting on customer requests is beyond their control. Either way, they’ve lost me as a customer.
How this hotel can be given more than two stars is beyond me. My daughter, granddaughter and I thought we could experience New York during the Christmas season to visit my oldest granddaughter who has lived in the upper West side for three years.the room we where assigned had a rust area just below the shower head that almost was rotted through. The rooms were kept so hot, controlled only by the hotel, so the way to make it cooler was to run the A/C. When you turned the A/C on it rattled so loud we could not keep it on while we slept. Since they where totally booked (why is beyond me) it was useless to ask to be moved. My daughter and I have gone to New York many times and have never had such a miserable and horrid experience.
Excellent service at reception with an italian guy named Pascual room service excellent they came every day to clean and the lady was nice.Rooms very comfy with nice view.Messanine to have a nice time with the family.
I like the boutique feel, the lobby is beautiful, the doormen were nice. Parking is quite expensive, but they have a $20 coupon for their garage. Albeit most people dont drive when they stay in the city. Now, the room we were put in was not pleasant at all. I am grateful for the hotel staff finally correcting their mistake of ignoring my report of mold and mildew in the room.
Temperature of room was locked in, couldnt be increased or decreased. mini fridge could barely keep drinks cold. pool was unavailable. roof bar was cool but 2 measly drinks cost an outrageous 50 bucks. found a roach in the lobby. staff were kind and helpful, always there to provide fresh towels, ice and alerts if and when ordering food.
Room is dark and dingy, bizarre decor, no natural light and dimmest light bulbs possible. No room service, not even a coffeepot in the lobby. Pool is closed though it’s 85 degrees. Only assets are great location, nice lobby. Rooftop bar is nice but you need reservations. If you want the location bad enough to put up with the dingy rooms and lack of service, insist on an upper floor with some natural light.
We are staying here for its proximity to the opera. After one night, I am ready to leave my review: the room would be totally adequate were it not for the ridiculously small bathroom. There is nowhere to put anything! There is no counter space, they give you some shelves that are too small to be useful, its just a complete nightmare if youre somebody who needs to keep things in the bathroom or needs counter space to do their hair or put on makeup, etc. To top it off, the cleaning crew left the handheld shower head in such a position that when I turned the shower on, ice cold water went spurting everywhere and soaked the entire bathroom.Theres no ice machines on our floor as far as I can tell, not that it would matter since theres no ice bucket in the room. If thats important to you then you should look at other hotels.Almost forgot to mention the peeling paint on the bathroom ceiling... Classy!
[RUDE STAFF, RACIAL SLURS] The facilities are shockingly outdated, with a completely useless air conditioner, constant noisy fans, wet carpets, broken hangers, and cockroaches emerging from the drains... you get to experience every hallmark of a bad hotel. But the absolute worst part is the front desk staff. While there are a few decent young staff members, the short, middle-aged man with glasses and a buzz cut was unbelievably rude.During my stay, I was plagued by the noise of renovation drills from 9 to 5, and when I requested a room change, this staff member yelled at me to stop complaining and even hurled racial slurs. Its a surprise that someone this arrogant has survived in the hospitality industry.
We are not those people and I hate having to write this, but do not stay here. Stay somewhere else. Our room was a sardine can, it was not clean (pubic hair in bathroom), bathroom situation was not good and the shower flooded the bathroom, took staff several minutes (half hour +) to provide new towels so we could shower after cleaning up the water, no wine key to enjoy and toast to our night in NYC, not even one at the front desk, and for $650 a night (with discount) you would expect at least the basics to be covered. It made us so sad to see such a historic, beautifully located hotel be such an unfortunate stay. Looking back, would have been worth the extra money (sadly at $650/night) to stay elsewhere.
Listing and advertising this location as a 4 star is disingenuous as the state of the rooms are 3 star AT BEST on a good day. The AC vents are dirty and the control consul is haphazardly placed with the wires exposed. The lighting is drab and presents an overall stuffy feeling. They list this place for 300$ on their main website which frankly is criminal. The wallpaper is peeling and the lobby REEKS of old cigarettes. This place has so much potential if they would just renovate it.Most of the staff was very accommodating and helpful except for one yodel that worked the night/ early morning shift. He had the tenacity to cop attitude with me when I made extra requests for an umbrella after waiting nearly 30 minutes to receive one in my room.Only stay if you get a discount from a third party booking site or for a short duration. NOT
Aside from the peeling wallpaper and moldy bathroom… security woke me knocking on my door at 10:30pm insisting I go to the front desk to re-enter my card for incidentals. I called the front desk and they, rudely, told me I needed to get out of bed and get downstairs immediately to re-enter my credit card for deposit. When I got downstairs I asked why they never called my cellphone if there was a problem with the card, and they told me to fix my tone. I tried to get through to management by calling >8 times, waited on hold for over half an hour, and never heard back from the Director of Ops, so it doesn’t seem like they want to resolve the issue.Suffice to say, I won’t be staying here again.
Avoid this hotel at all costs. It was completely unsanitary and extremely poor conditions. Mold and mildew everywhere, everything in the room is outdated and broken. This is worst than a motel, if I could give it 0 stars I would. This place needs to be shut down and completely remodeled.
Absolutely fantastic location. Its right across the street from Lincoln Center and a subway stop. Bonus there are restaurants, an ice cream shop and a Starbucks on the street level of the building. Nice hotel desk staff and the cleaning crew does a good job. The only downside is that the hotel rooms/building are getting shabby. Uneven floors, creaky doors, cracked tiles in the bathrooms, wheezing clunky air conditioning units, lumbering slow elevators, no coffee makers in the rooms, tiny bathrooms, and a few instances of peeling wall paper. But really, who comes to Manhatten to stay in their hotel room? The rooms here are shabby but clean. And 1000 great things are just outside the hotels front door.
Was walkable to everything. The staff were great and made me really feel welcomed. They were so friendly and helpful as well. I am sorry I didnt get any names, but all the front staff were great Friday - Sunday 8/23-8/25. There is a Starbucks just outside the front door and a few restaurants. Central Park is one block away.
The Empire Hotel in New York City boasts an unbeatable location across from Lincoln Center, offering easy access to Central Park and numerous attractions. Guests enjoy spacious and comfortable rooms, some even with stunning city views. The rooftop bar provides a vibrant atmosphere with live music. However, some guests find the decor a bit dated and the Wi-Fi inconsistent. Overall, if you prioritize location and comfort over modern aesthetics, the Empire Hotel is a great choice for experiencing the heart of Manhattan.
Staff is kind and helpful. Area is great and safe. We’ve enjoyed being a 15-20 minute walk from Times Square and about a 4 minute walk from Central Park. Highly recommend!
We took my dad to NYC for his first time as he is from South Africa. I chose this hotel for its great location and pool. When we arrived the valet told my husband that they werent able to drive or park our Jeep wagoneer and my husband was directed to 2 different parking sites to find overnight parking. We booked 2 rooms, 1 queen room and 1 king room. My husband and I stayed in the king. Half the lights in the room was out of order, the bedside lamp kept flickering and the light by the door didnt work. It was so warm in our room and the AC was super loud. We had to take the cover off the AC to get any air in our room. The bathroom sink was clogged and smelled awful. The room was extremely dark and there were no coffee maker or cups in the room. The fridge was tiny and dirty. The rooftop bar which isnt eveliated with the hotel turned several hotel guests away due to capacity. It would be nice to place preference on hotel guests first. The location is good. Close to central park, great restaurants, and the little park across the street with the Starbucks on the corner was the saving grace of our trip. I dont know how they got their 4 star rating as there isnt any room service either. Do yourself a favor stay somewhere else.
Rooms are too small to rent for 3 people. They had renovation going on at around 7 am right outside our room on Dec 30th, until around 4 pm. Very inconvenient.
This hotel was better than expected! Great location to many things. Roof top restaurant was awesome; great view, service and food. The lobby was beautiful and comfortable. The rooms were clean and comfortable. Smaller than a typical hotel room but very comfortable bed with a good layout to fit things in neatly and provide storage. I would say the room, sheets and towels were all very clean especially the bathroom. Overall the hotel was darkly decorated and seemed to have dim lighting. The service was some of the best ever. Helpful kind and professional! We would stay there again and have already recommended it to others. Thank you for a great trip.
The location is outstanding for access to all the venues Lincoln Center has to offer. Other than that it is not necessarily a dense dining area and certainly not a shopping area. The hotspots for those are at least a 10 to 20 minute walk. The room itself would have been OK despite a tight bathroom but was outweighed by having NO hot water in the morning, an AC unit that continuously reset itself to 82 degrees every 30 to 60 minutes and a hallway so poorly lit that the keycard slot was difficult to find. Staff at check-in were pleasant and efficient. Same for staff at check-out except she couldnt have cared less about the hot water, AC and hallway lighting problems, and showed it.
Rooms are small and very old. TV doesnt work and the room temperature is 100 degrees. Didn’t get any sleep it was so hot. Maintenance of no value. Compared to other hotels in NYC this one is rock bottom.
We stayed at the Empire for a week while our son moved into Fordham. Every member of the staff was professional and friendly. Front desk made sure we had a view of Lincoln Center/Fordham, housekeeping were fabulous cleaning the room and removed numerous empty boxes without complaint, and especially the bellmen - all of them - but special mention of Jose. He assisted us with moving everything from the room to Fordham. All staff were eager to assist us with anything we needed. The beds were comfortable and the rainfall type shower very nice. That said - the room could have used an upgrade like replacing old doors, adding more storage and little touches like provide paper and pen. However, the staff and location (especially for moving into Fordham) made it a perfect place for us.
Where do I begin on this Hotel. Pay attention to the reviews! This is one of the worst hotels I’ve ever stayed at. This isn’t a 4 star hotel this is actually a Motel. A 1 star on its best day! I switched two rooms because of how bad it was and both rooms were worse than the other. Wallpaper pealing from the walls. Ripped furniture. Stained curtains. Paint splatter on the moldings. The lock of the door was broken. The heater is broken in every room and to accommodate they bring a portable heater. I mean the list goes on and on. This hotel should cost $70 a day AT BEST. Pay a few extra hundred dollars to stay at a different Hotel and save yourself the discomfort and disappointment.
Bathroom is TOO SMALL and does not have any bathroom exhaust fan, room is small lacking the basic microwave or coffee maker found at many hotels. No beverage ammenities except bottled water at front desk. Some of the rooms wallpaper is curling off the wall. The location is close to Columbus circle and the Lincoln Center and places.
The room are little spacious depending on what you want, the color and light there a very dark, the bed are kind of, i didnt like it with the pillow, everything looks a little old, with some scratches, the rugs in the room, i dont know, but they are clean, no services, nothing. the location is good not far from times Square, i means. My stay here was not bad, it was quiet.I was there for 3 night with my mum and my kids (3kids, 1 infant), for a junior suite with 2 beds (full size)
I think we have found our home in the city. The Empire was everything we wanted while spending a week in NYC. For a weeks stay, we needed a suite and the room was perfect. We had one of the King Corner Suites and we couldnt have had a better room. The view on 2 sides was terrific - a view up Broadway and Columbus on one side, and Lincoln Center right outside our other 2 windows. And of course there was no better location in the city. Lots of natural light created a beautiful ambiance. Service was attentive and extremely friendly. We cant wait to return!
Beautiful hotel, but they dont have coffee in-room or room service, which seems silly. The mattress felt old, and the air-conditioning wasnt strong, but to be next to Central Park in a convenient location was nice.
My girlfriends and I were so excited to visit New York and stay at The Empire. We were told we would most likely be able to check in early. We showed up at 2:45, hoping to check in early, but didnt get our room keys until almost 4 pm, even though check-in time is at 3. This delay disrupted our plans and really put a damper on our trip. We were very disappointed with this experience. If you are planning on going to the city with plans, do not book this place.
Overall, this is a good place if you’re staying for a business trip or a few nights by yourself. The rooms are very small and dark, so I wouldn’t recommend for a family trip. I did like the location and there are a lot of good bakeries/dessert places nearby.
This hotel is overpriced, not well maintained, dirty, and the restaurant service and pool are frankly trashy af. It’s a 3.5 star hotel at best. Rooms are small and have thin discount mattresses.
The location of the hotel is amazing but that’s where it ends. Staff is not friendly and literally everything is very worn out or even dirty. The pool is tiny and it’s not actually open air and they have like 8 chairs around it. Unfortunately a very disappointing experience overall.
Good location. Horrible hotel. Its outdated, dirty, and generally run down. I was happy that I only stayed one night.
Great location, close to the Lincoln Center, some great restaurants, and a subway stop. Rooms could use some updating, but staff were great.
I never write reviews, but this was truly the worst stay Ive ever experienced. The first room I stayed in the lock did not work, there were dirty socks, and a card and chocolates set up for someone else. I asked for a different room because I did not feel safe. The second room smelled damp, I ignored for a little, but after sitting in the room my eyes started to swell. I realized the AC had a fist full of mold growing in it, the carbon monoxide detector was ripped out, when I tried to call the front desk the buttons had been popped out of the phone. I had to move to a third room at 12:30am. The third room was the best of the worst, however, the next day I realized there was no shower curtain where one was meant to be, the whole bathroom was soaking wet. When I tried to close the blinds the curtain rod fell out of the ceiling and I wasnt able to close them. When I checked out of the hotel, I requested some compensation for the trouble. Steven, at the front desk rudely said to me, Do you know how expensive a night at this hotel is? Well, yes Steven I do as I am the one paying for it. I kindly asked him if he knows how much a mold detox is going to cost me. He then said he would compensate me, just not right now. I asked him why not and he said I just dont feel like it.I then spoke to the manager who upon checking out with him, I realized they also overcharged me for an extra night of parking that was not mine. He said to have Expedia contact him and he would give me a refund for the parking, residence tax, and the first night, however, Expedia has not been able to reach anyone at the hotel. I am still waiting for my refund and will need to file fraud on my credit card if they do not issue it.Save your money do NOT stay here. There are hostels nicer than this.P.S. Maggie at the front desk was super lovely and helpful as well as the other female staff who helped me (but I didnt get her name). A better hotel should try to hire her.

The single thing the Empire has going for it is location. For events at Lincoln Center, its enormously convenient. We checked in for a one night stay, and our room was too hot - one of the two AC units in the room was non-functional. While we were out, engineering (an aspirational use of the word) stopped by to address the problem, and their solution was to drop off a portable fan. Upon our further complaint, we were moved to another room which was even hotter. When we called guest services again, they, as a courtesy,” moved us back into the original, slightly less hot room. Courtesy? The staff seemed unconcerned, unapologetic and generally unresponsive throughout, and tended towards rudeness. The property is dated and the room furnishings are quite worn. For our next visit for a show we will forgo the convenience for a better stay elsewhere.
The location is great, the staff is all very nice, and the rooftop bar/restaurant is very fun (but not operated by the hotel). The room was too hot, we had to keep the AC as low as it would go (55°) to sleep. We were on the 11th floor, thought wed have a great view...but it was a strange inside corner and all we saw were into other rooms. So, blinds stayed shut. And then no coffee in room was a bummer as we had to go to a cafe outside, next door to get coffee and start our days. I dont know if Id stay again... But we had a good rate, and again, great location... So Id possibly just ask for an actual view and that might help a lot. 🙂
Awful hotel. Room key never works, rooms are dingy, chips in the toilet, shower heads that don’t work. We won’t be coming back
Jose is the worst bartender !!!!!!!!!!!! I am in the hospitality business for 15 years and his service literally represents the lowest of the hotel . He was rude .. never introduced himself …..left us with out water for 45 minutes and when I asked him for his name he walk away and just had the worst service …and then asked me if I had a problem …... the service by Jose is just ghetto and neglect if you go to the bar asked forMiguel .. never Jose …. It’s just unfortunate he represents such a beautiful hotel… he has no respect for guest unless it befits him. The service is terrible !!!! Beware . It would be unfortunate if I was apart of corporate…He is just inconsiderate .. he is probably the reason why the hotel is below 4 stars … so sad
The hotel is in a prime location, clean for the most part, close to a lot of stores and food options. Decent price for rooms a night. No coffee or tea machines in the rooms or options for either at the hotel. Only basic channels to watch on the television and service are not compatible with mirroring your devices or streaming app features. There is no streaming app feature at all. Staff are friendly, helpful, and courteous. Check-in is at 3pm, our rooms were not available until 4:30pm. I would book again due to the prime location the hotel sits in; I now know what to expect and how to plan my stay in the future. Its definitely worth checking out.
Nice location but they charged twice the card when I did check in and I booked this trip one month before and I had to wait for my rooms that were not in the same floor even when I called to have it.Rooms are really dark, the pool is hide and really small, there is no space to kids play and adult have time chill; staff nice but service really bad, it took 1hour and a half waiting for our car after check out and call on time.I don’t recommend this place.
The location was great. I felt safe and was relatively quiet. There were some maintenance issues, like the shower drained slowly and the mini fridge didnt work really well but they replaced that for me. The rooms could use some updating, our chair was repaired with tape. Negative
We spent a magical moment with our three children in the Empire hotel, a welcome with the greatest sympathy. In addition. For the occasion, the hotel upgraded us to a superior room, which made our stay magical. Thank you to your establishment for these unforgettable memories that we were able to offer our children, the rooms are spacious, the hotel is quiet and very well maintained. So yes there are small jobs to be done but seriously it did not damage the quality of our stay. Thank you again for all these moments. I hope to come back to your place very soon.
The staff is the only thing saving this hotel. The rooms are dated and falling apart. Our sink was so close to the wall you could not stand in front of it. Our window ledge fell off when you lean on it and all of the fixtures in the bathroom were falling off. They put a $150 hold on your card for incidentals and there are no services in the hotel to spend money on. The rooftop lounge is awesome and run by someone else so you cannot charge things to your room. If you even want coffee in the morning, you must go out of the hotel. We will not return even though we are in NYC many times throughout the year. ADD on to the fact that the Valet service stole my Travel mug from my car. Dont waste your money on this dump.
We checked in for a night, and we ended up being late to arrive, and they were so nice at the front desk and even gave us an upgrade! We are returning for one more night next week, and are looking forward to it.
Nice room .Great rooftop bar. Cool craft cocktails
Perfect for our one night stay in NYC. Great location for the main attractions at a really decent price. Mattress and pillows were really good, we slept great. They offered a crib for our baby, we sleep with him so we got the single bed but I always appreciate that they have that option. The shower was nice and tall, my husband is 63 so it really does make a difference. The only thing that would of made it better would have been the towels, they were small and very rough, there was no coffee maker in the room, and when we turned on the heater it made creaking sounds but it went away after a minute. They were minor things, we still enjoyed our stay.Staff was very friendly and helpful when we arrived and gave us priority since we had a reservation. Valet was an extra charge (around $70) but you have to pay for parking anyway (around $50) and I dont think its close so we decided to upgrade and it was great not to have to worry about our car, we planned on walking to were we needed to go and it worked out great for us.Its a well maintained hotel, lobby is clean and spacious and was beautifully decorated, really gives you the New York vibe. There are 4 elevators so we never had long waits to get to our room. Didnt get to check out the rooftop restaurant because it was closed. Found the stairs to the pool but we have a baby and a stroller and couldnt find the elevator to take us all the way up but didnt try that hard so there might have been a button we didnt see. My only note with the rest of the hotel is that brightening it up might be more inviting, the rooms and hallways are a very dark theme that dont do the beautiful place justice in my opinion. We would definitely stay here again, however we will upgrade for the bigger room maybe with a view because its a great location. Has lots of restaurant options just a few feet away and target is less than half a mile for any essentials. We stopped at a coffee shop right around the corner on our way to the park, you arrive close to a playground and if you keep going a little bit you find the ice rink. Times square and Rockefeller were a longer walk but worth it, lots of places to stop on the way so didnt mind the walk at all.
I was pleasantly surprised by our stay after reading the reviews that others wrote. The employees were very accommodating and polite, our room was clean and comfortable, and our view of the city was wonderful. Thank goodness for the air conditioning because outside it reached 100 degrees during our stay.. The beds were a bit small, but that is to be expected in a small room in the city. The pool was very small as well, but so refreshing in the extreme heat. Location was great - walking distance to many attractions and restaurants. I would absolutely stay here again!
Was there for a social event and the staff was great. I forgot my credit card at the bar, was still in the bar and the bartender recognized me and returned my card.
This was a trip for 6 ladies. The hotel is in a nice area of New York City. We felt safe. Walking distance to most sights. However it rained so Uber was our friend. The hotel is older but the room was spacious and clean. All 6 of us were able to stay in one room. The rooftop bar and lounge was wonderful, wish we could have sat outside. Service was great. Cannot beat the price. Would recommend it.
Stayed here for a weekend and it was a nice stay! The hotel itself is nice, quiet, and well-maintained. The check-in process was quick and easy. The person who helped me was super friendly and accommodating! Im super picky when it comes to the “standard of cleanliness.” The room was nice and clean but the thing I felt yucky by was the carpet in the room. I would suggest for the hotel to deep-clean their carpet in the rooms. I would stay here again but I would only walk around the room with socks or flippers.
Rooms: a good size for NYC. The hallways are very dark we had to use a flashlight to assist us putting key card in. Ac was maxed out and was around 75 at night. Lightning overall very poor.**Atrium and lobby are super nice compared to what rooms areService: we only stayed overnight so can’t so too much. We didn’t have much help with our bags, or much clarification from front desk about food/locations/ checkin-out process.Location: great location. Near everything you need to be near in manhattan NY, walkable to broadway/Times Square etc.
Booked a room for 1 night to see a Broadway show and with all the fees it was almost $500. We reserved 2 Queen beds but the rooms air conditioning did not work and the blinds were broken. Luckily we were able to open the windows for a breeze. Went to the lobby to see if we can get a different room but it was all booked. They sent maintenance to help, he was very friendly, but I could have gone to the Hyatt in midtown for a better experience and price. I would not suggest this hotel!
Pria and the front desk staff were so accommodating! Room is very nice and hotel is very walkable
Really nice double room. Just would be nice to have ventilation in the bathroom. Rooftop bar is great.
Clean and well maintained hotel downstairs in the lobby, but personally, the price you pay rooms are small and at night very noisy due to the heaters or something outside or above our room. Our heater would have made the noise worse, so I turned it off, but then it was still not great as so much noise from elsewhere kept me and my wife awake most of the night. Wouldnt stay again, and pictures on google are not our hotel room. We took a picture and video but seemed to cant find but hope hotel takes on the review and updates pictures and sort the racket of noise out.
Beautiful old hotel. Near the cruise terminal and across the street from the Lincoln Center . Walking distance to Rosettas Bakery and Dante Park
Very noisy rooms. Old style hotel with no fans in bathroom and very small, bad paint and others (Dont trust pictures, seems they always give you the bad rooms at beginning). Paid around $900 fro two night, worst one in our spring break travel.
First of all, before I even arrived a mysterious charge from the hotel came off my card. Second, on check in I was told the hotel is overbooked and the room I booked wasn’t available. Then when I got to the room they gave me, I was hugely disappointed: broken furniture, cramped, run down. I swear, I have stayed in the majority of the leading hotels of the world and expected so much from this hotel based on its reputation that this was really, really awful. I’m usually a passive person, but after coming so far and paying so much for THAT, I lost it. Thankfully the man at the counter changed my room; it was a bit better: only the wall paper was damaged, a few less stains on the curtains, and the bathroom door was less damaged. Nonetheless, still very cramped. There’s no breakfast service; okay - there’s a Starbucks downstairs and a Smith’s across the road. I bought food at the rooftop restaurant, and was once again let down.Look, it’s close to some really good spots and the subway. Other than that, it is a very disappointing hotel. Make sure you don’t spend much time inside it, and maybe come back drunk when it’s time to sleep so the dreary interior is more tolerable. I’m serious, the decor/colour scheme is dark and depressing and makes me think of The Shining (not the awesome bits). And the access cards stop working immediately on checkout time, so don’t dare go for a run or walk on the morning of checkout - they won’t be merciful. The nicest staff are the doormen.I enjoyed NYC for everything OUTSIDE The Empire Hotel - even the homeless people were friendlier than the woman at the desk on the first night. And lastly, good luck trying to get your refund for some obscure charge they have. I am still waiting to this day four months after I stayed there. They gave me the biggest runaround of my life, multiple excuses and explanations that just doesn’t make sense. Beware!!! Next time I’ll listen to my better judgment and go stay at The Plaza etc.
Its a classy but old hotel, charm but a few details are overlooked. For NY and its history its delightful. The location is superb, walking distance to Tavern on the Green, Central Park, Cruise Piers etc. Fantastic views from Roof Top, some of the rooms youre staring at a building with its windows. Rooms are small but adequate enough but without window view it can feel confining. Concierge, Bell Hop, taxi and Uber are easy to get. Have cleaning service sit on toilet to see what we see and add a little extra detail for our comfort of paying the higher prices.
Five nights before Christmas. Two rooms. Great overall! Very good location for us: Two subway stations a few blocks away, restaurants, Lincoln Center, Central Park, walked to Times Square, Rockefeller Center, short subway and short walk to Radio City walked back, etc.Staff responded right away to email notification about late arrival, we got rooms we requested, very fast check in.Not perfect: No AC in one room but they provided a new room the same evening. The windows open (good!) but leaked a little which could have been a problem. Our rooms were somewhat dated, but were very clean and plenty big (for New York). Plenty of power outlets for our too many devices. The mattresses were very good; we slept well.Wed happily stay at The Empire again.
Very noisy room. We were on the 5th floor and it was almost like the dual glazed windows were open. We had a hard time sleeping most nights due to noise. This is an old style hotel with no fans in the bathroom and an overall tired dated look with odd dark wall paper in the narrow hallways. Our bathroom had paint peeling off the ceiling. Having said that and aside from the noise, the staff was great and the location was central enough to walk to most sites. They were also one of the few hotels that offered rooms large enough to accommodate dual beds and a hide-a-bed.
Stayed here for two nights, and based on the reviews, I had some idea what to expect. As noted, the rooms are small, like what you see throughout Europe. I was on my own, so this was fine for me but if you’re traveling with someone, you’ll be on top of each other and not in a good way. The one place where the small size was an issue was the bathroom. It’s so cramped that you have to stand to the side of the vanity. There’s no room to stand in front of it, even if you’re small (see pic). Also, there’s a small step up into the bathroom (pic 2). It didn’t cause a problem, but if you’re not careful, or if it’s the middle of the night, can seriously stub a toe.The Empire is an older building and it shows, but I thought things were generally in good shape with one exception. The was no power to most of the room’s outlets, and the one I found that was working took much longer to charge my phone than usual. On the positive side, the Empire is in a great location, and the staff is friendly and helpful. I’d consider staying here again if was traveling solo and could be more confident in the power outlets.
I would like to inform you of my dissatisfaction during my stay.I stayed in room 414 from Dec 30th to Jan 1st.Firstly, at check-in we were offered a larger room but without a view which was supposed to be available at 3pm. We accepted, but at what price?- The room was available at 16h50. So we wasted time waiting at reception.- Non-stop noise from outside ventilation.- No ventilation in the bathroom.- 3 towels for 4- 1 pair of slippers for 4....The basic room rate was $1168 tax included but I was charged $1318.32. A so-called lack of funds.... But rather an error on your part because the amount is was still blocked on my card for 7 daysA mistake that could have prevented me from staying with you if I had no other funds.I was charged $600 after the first error to guarantee the reservation. I had to pay the rest at check-out BUT my room was blocked on the second day, we went to reception 5 TIMES thinking we had a card problem. None of the receptionists except 1 took the time to check why. So we wasted another 1 hour trying to figure it out.... So I had to pay the rest of the amount to get into my room, which hadnt been cleaned... Great service. In short, Im extremely disappointed with the service and the lack of professionalism. All we got was a sorry.
Nasty and overpriced. Do not stay here. There are so many other accommodations available in NYC. We paid $1900 for 4 night—criminal. TV does not work. Strong smell of chlorine in the room, so I had to leave the window open. I asked twice to have the smell checked out, no one showed up or cared. Pillows are shredded foam. No blanket on the bed, other than a throw at the bottom. No chair to work at so-called desk. Tiny room. Front desk did not answer the phone, I went down there and they were not willing to change my room. Noisy construction work on nearby rooms above my floor until 5:00pm each day. Challenging to find a place to eat other than a Starbucks. My advise, stay anywhere else and take a taxi to Lincoln Center. I prefer Midtown and Times Square area. This hotel should not be allowed to charge customers high fees with multiple issues. The photos that they post are misleading and should be considered fraud.
The hotel sits in a prime location with many things within walking distance. The staff was courteous and professional. The rooms are where they lost a star. Our beds were made with only a top sheet, so you either slept with a comforter over you or nothing at all. There was no thermostat control in the rooms so sometimes a comforter was too hot. The toilet in the room had been installed crooked and against the wall. And there is no coffee anywhere in the hotel.
We booked a room for my son, who stayed in the hotel for 3 weeks, fully paid. The apartment he was waiting to move into became unexpectedly unavailable for another week. I tried to extend his stay with a new one week reservation. Manager Sara overruled her colleagues assurance the evening before that this would be fine by insisting that my son move out for 24 hours before my reservation would be honored. This was simply unfair and unacceptable. Naturally, I canceled the reservation for a refund. The right approach would have been to accommodate a guest who paid nearly $4,000 in room fees. But apparently, this manager thought otherwise. I wish I had a validreason to give a better review. But I dont.
Great location, quiet area, clean and safe which was extremely important. No too far from the sightseeing and close walking distance to central park! Close to the fashion are, museums, everything was close yet safe and peaceful. The rooms was a good size, I just wish a bit more updated. The roof top view is amazing! You can have dinner there, just make sure to make reservations. 😉
Front desk staff was not helpful at all. The keys did not work five times. Each and every time I spoke with him they’re obnoxious and not very helpful. Customer service here is horrible.
This is one of the dirtiest, tiniest, run down and poorly taken care of hotels I’ve ever stayed in. The walls had peeling wallpaper, showers are disgusting, the bathroom is the world’s tiniest bathroom you can’t even fit in. The carpet in the rooms are gross and look dirty. There is no individual control of the AC in your room, it’s just gross. I left my toothbrush and toothpaste at home, they told me they would send one up. After I waited an hour I called back and the front desk let me know they ran out of them. Beds are also horrible. Do yourself a favor and stay anywhere else.
Very small room and even tinier bathroom. On the plus side comfortable bed and its quiet.
Came here for a networking party at the rooftop space. Nice space and friendly staff. The bartenders really know what they are doing. The passed hors d’oeuvres were tasty and the views are top notch.
I would give this Hotel a 3.7. It is in a good location and has good subway connections. Rooms are spacious and staff is quick and professional. However the hotel does require an upgrade. For example, when trying to shower I turned the faucet and nothing was coming out - I did turn the valve to open the tap just next to shower head itself and it started leaking yellow water for a few seconds. Perhaps the shower wasnt used? But from a 4 star hotel thats not something I would expect....The gym is small and is falling apart. I saw some equipment that had bolts sticking out - thats a health and safety concern.Oh and theres no breakfast
Location is great but that’s it. The price is unbelievable high for what it is. Toilet was broken, the infrastructure of the bathroom was old, bed was uncomfortable, I was stolen inside the hotel and the staff told me they would do nothing about it, not even checking the cameras. If you’re gonna pay this high for a hotel go for one that actually has a good reputation, it was my fault for not checking before booking. Also the room was incredible small. We booked to queen sized bed room and we got just regular 2 person bed and it was sooo small you can barely walk on it.
The price, location, cleanliness and the lobby is awesome unfortunately that’s where it ends. I checked in Dec 21st 2023 the room had no lights they were flicking on and off, the TV didn’t work and favorite there was no hot water until the morning of my checkout 12/23. I called reception day one they said a technician would come up to make repairs however he didn’t make it. They did refund me one night but why wouldn’t they I basically slept there like I was in a shelter no water, lights and TV. Did I mention the sink was detached from the wall in the bathroom see images. I tipped the Bellman $20 and the Housekeeper those were my two best experiences. The room is very clean and the linen and bed are made well! So whoever is leading the housekeeping team and Bellman team have them Train the GM of this hotel because the aside from that this is a sad hotel to book. Major renovation job needed here which is not the staffs fault either.
I wanted to come here for lunch on their top floor because I was a fan of Gossip Girl back in the day. I did not stay overnight so I cant comment on any of the rooms. But I can tell you that the staff in the lounge were so kind and sweet to everyone. They were patient, friendly, and professional and everything they did. I spent almost 2 hours there with my friend looking at the view, walking out onto the terrace, just enjoying New York City from a new view. I enjoyed it.
The location is Great the people are nice but when something has a problem they do not want to admit and find a solution. Our AC did not cool the room. We Noticed it right away but figured maybe it was since it was off so we set it down to 65 and left for the evening, after coming back about 8 hours later out room temperature was the same 76 degrees. (took a picture every day so no one would think i was being dramatic)Had someone come look at it, they changed the filter out and said that was the issue. The morning the room was still the same temperature 76. Told the front desk and they had someone else come again and this time gave us a little fan saying the units are just working hard. (mind you the temp outside was about 60 degrees) This process repeated about 4 times, they had no more rooms since it was the largest room they had.I understood hey maybe the ac isn’t working but they would not admit it, and i understand that we did have the biggest room so it was hard to relocate us, and they had no more rooms.I was told some type of compensation would be considered from multiple people which made me feel a little better. So the day came to check out i was told the managers in a meeting so they would follow up with me via Email. That should off been my red flag honestly but i had no time.I have since called and emailed and have been told i would be reached out too, but nothing so far.So to all that hope to stay here and situation comes up have them address it right away and talk to a manager before you check out.If they do reach out i will update this review but as off now they don’t care.
We had a pleasant stay. Staff were incredibly welcoming and service minded, we arrived early and was offered an early check in which was highly appreciated. The hotel is conveniently located and we walked almost everywhere. Make sure to check out the rooftop bar as well. Great views, cocktails and food. The staff there is also incredibly attentive and friendly. The only downside of things would be the rooms. They’re pretty outdated and could really use some work. However for the price you pay, this hotel was great.
I enjoyed The Empire Hotel. The service was great. We went to the rooftop bar (which was nice) but didnt stay because there wasnt much room left to sit or stand around comfortably, plus there was a private party on one side. I definitely liked that a lot of things were within walking distance.
They are doing their best they truly are however, the rooms are undergoing renovation, and they are not in great shape. The carpeting in some of the rooms was wet I had to change rooms and the wallpaper or paint on the ceiling is peeling off, the bathroom paneling is sort of corroded and the shade in my room wasn’t working, and they had to replace it. Furthermore, the curtains are dirty, and the way that I do not even want to describe. There is no coffee pot and no microwave in the room so the amenities are just bare minimum, and when the front the front desk is busy you can be waiting on the phone for more than 10 minutes which is ridiculous.
I had reserved 2 rooms for work meeting. When we arrived they could only find 1 room. I ent to dinner and talked to another manager whom found the other room under my name. Great location!! Walking distance to shopping, restaurants, park, Times Square. Rooms are dated but still nice vibe.Note. When checking inn, be ready to pay $200 more than expected for fee’s and taxes. The deal online with 3rd party is not accurate.Parking $60 per night. You can find street parking but prepare to walk.
I didnt stay in the hotel. I had brunch at the Rooftop restaurant. The food was excellent and the drinks were good. Pearla was a great hostess and I will definitely return soon. The hospitality manager was very accommodating. Thank you so much for making my birthday a great one!
Before listing the bad things, I would like to acknowledge that all the staff at this place were welcoming, friendly and helpful to the extent that they could be. The issues rather stem from the management. If you can find another place to stay, you probably should. If staying across from the Lincoln Center sounds appealing and potentially worth the cost, as it did to us, you may be disappointed to discover that the heavy winter shade does not raise up, leaving you in claustrophobic quarters with no view. We were offered to move to another room the next day, which we could not do due to our packed schedule, so we resorted to climbing on a chair and using clips to hold up the shade. Another guest did move to another room, where the curtain rose all of 12! She used her suitcase to prop it up.The room and bathroom were quite small, which is fine, but we also found 2 live cockroaches in the bathroom during our short stay, which is unacceptable.
I enjoyed my stay. There was a slight issue at check-in, and Adam, the manager, got it resolved easily. He even provided a room upgrade. After seeing my colleagues accommodations, I had even greater appreciation for the upgrade because the standard queen room was very small. The location was great, right across the street from Lincoln Center. The staff were all helpful and kind, going above and beyond to ensure my comfort. Thank you 😊
The location was great and the overall ambience is nice. However the bed is horrible. It was like sleeping on a sidewalk it is so hard and uncomfortable and the shower didn’t work. For over $350 a night all I want is a good nights rest and a place to wash. I have two more days here and can’t imagine how we’re going to get through. Also, when booking through Orbitz it clearly stated Breakfast included. When down stars looking for the dining hall to only be told no breakfast at this hotel. Not a biggy just surprised.
Cracked ceilings in all 3 rooms our party stayed in. One bed looked like I had been chewed on. No coffee makers in the rooms(!?!). Windows very dirty. You expect more from a 4 star (?!?) hotel and the price.
Its not a cheap place to stay.... But thats pretty common for NYC. Its a 100 year old hotel... Its true value? Its. closeness to the David Koch theater.... So after a performance of the NY ballet, it was literally just across the street.I wish they had room service... But there are plenty of dining options within walking distance. The neighborhood is fairly typical for a big city. Dont look like youre lost... And try to have someone with you at all times. There was a shooting in central park (near the hotel) but thats not typical
I found this a really good hotel. Excellent service, nice clean rooms, great location. Next NYC trip I will stay here againI will say that although there was temperature control in the rooms, it wasnt very accurate and didnt persist at the consistent temperature it claimed. 70F felt more like 75F.
My room was small (NY standard) and dark, with an awful view of the back of the building and other rooms (needed to keep blackouts closed), and a bit noisy at night. Theres no coffee machine in the room, but theres a big tv, fridge and a small but nice bathroom. Even with availability, the hotel charges $100 for 2 hours early check-in. Very good service, friendly and efficient. The location is great, 3 minutes from the metro station and Columbus Circle.
Stayed in a very small room at a very expensive rate. The hotel is very dark and our room was overly warm. No breakfast provided and no coffee pot in the room. Staff was courteous and helpful. Location is good. Will not book again.
We had an horrible experience in this hotel. The first room we checked into was extremely small with any room to walk (which we chalked it up to as any other hotels in NYC), but the toilet was horribly stained and the sink was clogged and the design of sink was so bad that the water would splash all over you. When we wanted to change our room, as we had just checked in, they insisted on sending out engineers to fix the problems. I was furious that they wanted to start our trip with a room with so many problems and it was clear that those stains arent gonna go away. When I insisted on changing the room, they asked us to pack up and come back down all the way and stand in line to check back in, only to send us back to the same floor with an opposite room. The cleanliness was average. The only plus was the location of this hotel. Not going to stay here again.
We stayed for 2 nights and the receptionist asked us deposit of $150 dollars, apart from paying the nights, we ordered another night and they charged us another $150 deposit Apart from paying the extra night, they never returned the $300 dollars that I put deposit. Ive called to get them back but they never give me a solution. I do not recommend it, it ended up paid much more.
My five star review is solely based on customer service alone!Steven helped me at the front desk and made my stay the absolute best. He was extremely patient in answering all my questions and worked to accommodate my needs during my business trip!I would come back to the Empire Hotel again the next time I’m in town for business, solely based on his customer service alone. THANK YOU STEVEN and everyone at the Empire Hotel. You’ve got a loyal guest for life!
The reviews had me nervous but this hotel was great! I spend a lot of time in nyc but usually in the theater district. I picked this hotel bc it was right next to the venue of an event I was attending. The lobby was lovely, the elevators were fast and readily available (one of my biggest concerns whenever I’m in the city), the staff was incredibly nice, the rooms/bathrooms were clean, in good shape, and pretty standard size wise for nyc hotels, we had a lovely view, and the location was great. The rooftop bar was also a big perk - cute, solid drink options, and good food! I look forward to an excuse to stay there again!
We stay here every year because it is convenient to Lincoln center and we go to an event at Lincoln Center. Otherwise, I would likely I would look for a different hotel. When we checked in Thursday night, the room was 67° and the hotel staff couldn’t help us regulate the temperature but brought up an extra blanket. They have no room for us to switch into and it was 10 o’clock at night and I wanted to go to bed. I had to wake up early. The next night seem to have fixed the thermostat. We stayed in room 115 and we noticed that there was also fruit flies buzzing around the room. Hopefully they were fruit flies. I’m a biology major and they did look like Drosophila.
The hotel looks very grand and welcoming upon arrival. The folks at the front desk are very nice and helpful. After checking in we went out on the town and returned later in the evening to find that our tv was broken and would not work at all. The front desk sent a maintenance man up to look at it and he said it needed to be replaced which he could not do. Once we settled in with no tv we were kept up most of the night by the sound of chairs or something dragging across the floor above which later we learned was the rooftop bar right over our room. This started up again very early in the morning( I’m assuming this was cleaning or prep). Once awake I was unable to go back to sleep so I went into the bathroom to wash my hands so that I could put in my contacts where I found a stained towel waiting for me. This had me pretty disgusted at this point so we left very shortly after. I feel that at this price point this hotel fell very short and one should look elsewhere.
Worst hotel ever. I am writing this at 4:25 AM after not having been able to sleep. As soon as you walk in to the hotel there is a noticeable damp, humid smell in the lobby. The rooms are also weirdly humid. The blinds don’t work so the windows don’t get sunlight. The showers have little plastic curtains, no doors. I turned on the AC to dehumidify the room and the rattling noise that came out of it kept me up all night. Don’t stay here.
This hotel didnt have the prettiest rooms, it was very cramped, the hallways are very narrow, and the walls are thin. As in you can hear any conversation in the hallway clear as day. The reception area is gorgeous, thats why the room was so disappointing. Im not sure if the quality of room changes depending on how much u pay. The location is perfect, right down the corner is a Starbucks that made my drinks better than anywhere else; and right across the street, this little taco truck I fell in love with. I highly recommend their chicken quesadilla, trust me. I love the little seating areas directly across the street infront of the hotel, and theres this huge dance area right next to it. The hotel is close to grand central park, Ive walked there a couple times. So I love the location, the room... not so much, hopefully I find a better quality next time.
Sadly, this hotel has gone downhill over the last few years. Have always stayed here, and decided to stay again for our long weekend, but should’ve looked elsewhere. Spent around $400 per night, they graciously “upgraded” us to a room not facing the back of the building. The rooms have gotten significantly worse since my last time here.. not maintained at all. Paint chips, mildew, wallpaper is completely flaking off, bathroom door crumbling apart, just generally not taken care of, it looks dirty even though the cleaning staff do a great job. Wish they would maintain the rooms as well as they do the lobby. Lastly, I have always received great service here, and mostly did this past time too, with the exception of check in on Thursday afternoon.. the lady who checked us in was cold, short and demeaning towards us. The other staff are lovely, especially the security and door staff. All in all, not worth the cost anymore sadly.. will stay elsewhere next time :(
Great hotel and great location. The check in process was very easy and smooth. The clerk was very friendly. Rooms are super clean and the lobby is really cool. We picked this hotel because we were across the street from the Met and had tickets to the opera. Being in town for only one night made the location perfect. I was pleasantly surprised by the great room and great service to check in. I will be coming back to this hotel.
The Empire is rated as a 4 star hotel, but isnt. Location is accessible to major areas of New York City by walking or public transit, so you dont need to rent a car. The grand lobby is stunning and likely why it has been featured in these shows - Sex in the City, Gossip Girls. Now the rooms are not 4 star. The wall paper is peeling in places, there was no bathtub to soak in after a long day of sightseeing, the sink was shallow and splashes your clothes...and plug was stuck for a while, the ceiling rain shower drips cold water on you when its off, washroom door was rotting, theres no washroom fan so it can be humid and smelly in the room, though we booked for our family they didnt prepare enough towels and supplies, and the safe was not working. The staff need more training. Depending on who it was they were great or so so. Sometimes they see you coming and get the door and other times they just watch you. Front desk the same - some were a bit rude and others very helpful. This was intimidating and caused me not to make note of the shortcoming of our room to the front desk. Our room also was not ready on time. The amenities were ok with rooftop lounge. The swimming pool is so small and no wonder they show only 80% of it. Yet the online photos made everything look so awesome, but its also showing that it needs some upgrading. The stairs to the pool are super creepy, with pipes and peeling paint (see 2 photos). If we knew what we know after staying there, we would have looked for an alternative. The price, star rating are not accurate. The only plus for us was the location.
I did not book this room; a friend did. She noted that the initial room we were assigned was not nice and that the A/C was broken, but by the time I arrived she had already been upgraded to a better room. This was the only room I saw in person but I loved it. We had a view of Lincoln Center Plaza and were walking distance to a number of great restaurants and bodegas and coffee shops for meals whenever we wanted, and even got a late night cookie delivery (because NYC vacations mean on demand cookies).Cons are the elevators were too slow at peak times when everyone wants to leave or come back for the night, and it can take up to half an hour to get your vehicle back if you opt for valet service (or so we were told; our car took less than 15 minutes but the fact they said it could take a half hour probably means sometimes it does, so plan ahead for checkout if you have to make a flight or see a show.
Front desk staff were rude, seemed to not care that I needed to ask them questions. My room was disgusting: ripped carpet, nasty curtains, bathroom has seen better days. I honestly dont think my room was cleaned before I checked in. No working mini fridge, had to ask 3 times for a new one. Bed was uncomfortable and I heard everything in the hallway and constant street noise. The lock on the door didnt really work, I was traveling solo and didnt feel that safe. Hallway was super dark and carpet in elevator was stained. I was told misleading information about getting my car from valet as I had an early morning, so I ended up having to walk to the garage at 5AM despite paying for valet service. Only positive was the rooftop deck and the bartenders were nice. Overall, avoid at all costs.
We had a great stay at the Empire Hotel! We are already looking forward to coming back! The location is amazing -- right next to Lincoln Center and all the wonderful arts events offered there and nearby in walking distance. Our room had a nice view and the beds were super comfortable -- not mushy at al! The staff was fantastic and the hotel has a relaxed vibe despite its over-the-top decor which has its own special high-energy appeal. The only negative was the hot water which was extremely hot -- on the one hand, this was reassuring because it speaks of cleanliness. On the other hand, if you had a little kid, this might be dangerous, so please, managers, at least warn people or re-consider that extreme temp. Thanks, Empire!
Location: amazingStaff: lovelyHotel : Dark and NOT clean. Rooms have OLD smelly carpet (happy I don’t own a black light because I can imagine this carpet has a few crime scenes worth of DNA) the bathroom baseboards are rotting and the window coverings were covered in some sort of fluid - not taking any guesses here. No ice machine, no room service, no lobby bar. The hotel just isn’t great considering the amount of spots to stay in NYC that would likely be the same price if not cheaper4 out of 10: would not recommend, especially us cleanliness is important to you.We paid $50 to check in 2 hours early.
I deeply regret staying here. We were forced to move rooms three times because the air conditioning made awful noise all night. The windows are so old and loose that you can essentially hear outside all evening. Not sound proof whatsoever. Not relaxing whatsoever. Worst sleep I’ve gotten at a hotel. Do not stay.
Well located next to Broadway, the hotel is nice and clean but swimming pool needs a little bite of refurbishment
Great location and friendly staff, but it stops there. Room was a dump. Broken lamp shade, broken vanity door, broken window shade. Something sticky and unidentifiable on the tv. Furniture was torn and scratched to hell. Bed like concrete and pillows like torn styrofoam. Control to air was broken so no adjusting. Bed cover was a duvet cover over a comforter so no options if you are too warm or cold since the sheet was not detachable. No coffee anywhere. SKIP IT.
I recently stayed at The Empire Hotel for a few days, and unfortunately, my experience was less than satisfactory. While there were some positive aspects, there were several significant issues that marred my stay.Check-in was a frustrating ordeal as I had to wait for approximately 45 minutes due to a malfunctioning phone in the room. The staff seemed ill-prepared to handle the situation promptly, and it was not until the next day that the phone was fixed, causing unnecessary inconvenience during my stay.Another disappointment was the lack of bed sheets and comforters provided for the sofa bed in the room. After requesting these amenities, I was surprised when they were delivered in a large black garbage bag, which was unprofessional and off-putting.Moreover, cleanliness was a serious concern throughout my stay. Upon entering the room, I noticed a spill on the sofa that had not been cleaned. Despite multiple reminders, it took the hotel staff two days to address the issue, leaving an unsightly stain for an extended period. One of the main attractions of the hotel was the rooftop, but to my dismay, it was closed for three out of the four days of my stay. Although I was informed that the closure was due to weather conditions, I couldnt help but question the validity of the explanation, as the weather appeared perfectly fine during those days. This lack of access to a promised amenity was disappointing and affected my overall enjoyment of the hotel. On a positive note, the location of The Empire Hotel is indeed pleasant, offering easy access to nearby attractions and amenities. Additionally, the hotel staff members were friendly and accommodating when dealing with the various issues I encountered during my stay.In conclusion, The Empire Hotel fell short of my expectations. The check-in process was marred by delays and phone issues, the cleanliness of the room was subpar, and the closure of the rooftop was a major letdown. While the location and friendly staff were commendable, they were not enough to compensate for the numerous shortcomings. I hope that the hotel management takes these criticisms constructively and works to improve the overall guest experience.
Rooms are small, outdated, bathroom very outdated. Honestly room is not worth the price you pay for.
Incredibly underwhelmed with this hotel. Location is great but the room I stayed in was absolutely disgusting. The bathroom was full of mould (pictured) and stank like it. The wallpaper was peeling off, the blinds (also mouldy) wouldn’t open to let natural light in, and there was a pair of men’s underwear on the windowsill.
Never had a worse stay in a hotel in my life. In the middle of winter, the heat broke down in the room multiple times per day. They barely apologized and said they can move me to a room facing a wall if I want - came back to fix the heater 3x on my final day today and they leave the cold freezing air running while I wait for them to come back and no word when. on top of this, the night before a security guard woke up me at 2am banging on my door and entering my room - I called the front desk and the manager simply says sorry they were doing patrol. Stay away from this rundown hotel.
The lobby guy Tony at the empire rooftop is the nicest person ever, best lobby man fr trust me go there just to say hi to Tony.
Without a doubt the worst doorman and greeting staff I have ever encountered While I was waiting for my guest. They actually kicked me out of the loading zone. Without a doubt some of the rudest people in this business, I found better service at a best Western.
We got this hotel and the location was great. We paid around $1,450.00 for a deluxe room with 2 double beds and queen sofa bed for 3 nights. It was very spacious for 6 people but the room is outdated and the bathrooms trimming was pretty bad. I really only liked the hotel because of where it is located.
Fantastic location just next to Lincoln Center and very close to Central Park. Our room was small with a smell of old tobacco that probably came from the carpets. A lot of noice from the air conditioning. Everything a bit old and worn out but housekeeping was very good and cleaned the room every day.Rooftop pool is small and not so clean. The staff is very friendly and accommodating.
Was mostly a good experience. We had issues adjusting the thermostat in the unit and had staff come up to assist only for us to discover that it was not able to be controlled. It was either extremely not or freezing, nothing in between. And in the shower one of the nozzles on the shower head was broken so it was a little difficult to shower effectively. The bathroom vanity was also installed on top of the wall plug in the bathroom which was concerning.... Like was this place updated to building code? seems like an issue...... But the bed was clean, they brought us extra sheets for the pull out couch, it got the trick done. That being said, if I had it to do over again I would book at the Westin down the road for cheaper.... Wasnt worth $1239 for 2 nights...... The westin was likely much nicer and it was definitely the cheaper option.
Our experience with this hotel was a let down. From the unloading of the luggage which was painful since there wasn’t any meaningful unloading zone to the bedroom itself ($500 on a weekend for a queen, with zero view, peeling wallpaper and paint all around, musty smell. This was a tiny bedroom and bathroom. Door wouldn’t shut either unless strongly slamming it) The lady at front desk (there at around 11:30a.m. on 10.07.23) was useless when confronted with a parking issue. The QR code from the parking voucher provided by hotel was unreadable by parking attendant (Parking was a 7 minute walk). I was supposed to walk back to get a new voucher at the hotel. I asked my spouse waiting at the hotel to take a picture of the new voucher ($52 vs 72 for 24h) and text it to me to avoid walking back but the lady at the desk told him it wouldn’t work. Well, fortunately, we didn’t listen and it did work. Beside the bellmen that were nice, and a good location (near Columbus circle and Central Park) this wasn’t a pleasant experience. Will NEVER come back here and wouldn’t recommend it.
I visited the rooftop restaurant for a private event, so I dont know about the rooms. The rooftop is a decent size area thats more of a wraparound rooftop but plenty of space for a large gathering or even a smaller, intimate group. The environment is relaxed, like hanging out at a backyard get-together. They really do a good job of serving their guests with both food and drink. The appetizers were really impressive and had plenty of vegetarian options. I look forward to returning in the near future.
If I could 0, I wouldve! This hotel is so old! See pictures. The service is -10, the hotel staff is so unfriendly and not helpful at all. We were at the hotel at 4am due to an early flight, so asked for possible early check in as check in is only at 3pm. We were told we couldnt, so asked to be on the waiting list. Nobody called us until we went back at 2pm after seeing other people check in. I then asked for a big room as theres 3 of us with 8 suitcases, I was put in an old room with cracked furniture and peeling walls, with a tiny space for a closet. Filthy windows and dirty shower with stains. This the worst hotel Ive been in in New York and Ive been to a few. Worst part is that its overpriced with terrible customer service. Do yourself a favour, DO NOT COME HERE! Go to The Manhattan rather
Very dark rooms and hallways. No in room coffee makers. A lot of noise from street and other rooms.
Do not waste your money on The Empire Hotel! Our first room had a horrible odor and a clogged sink. After four unsuccessful attempts to resolve these issues, the manager had the audacity to claim that he was accommodating us by providing us with another room!Additionally, there is no restaurant meaning, obviously no room service and the pool is actually a small lap pool in a claustrophobic room. The last straw for me was discovering that there was no coffee available for guests. Yep, no coffee. (You can, however, leave the hotel and get a cup of regular coffee (for $6.00) at Starbucks around the corner.)The one-star rating is for the hotel’s location, which is good.Enjoy your visit to NYC and make hotel reservations elsewhere!
The worst hotel experience ever!! Upon check-in we were informed that the room we exclusively booked AND paid for was unavailable. We were downgraded to an extremely unacceptable suite and told we would get a $200 refund for our inconvenience. The room we were given was $200 less than the room we booked, so really NO compensation for the less than acceptable situation we were forced into. Heat in that room was unbearable. 78 degrees when we first entered the room and 75 after having the AC on full blast for hours. Asked to have a repair man come and fix and the solution for the fix is to OPEN A WINDOW. I would absolutely NEVER recommend or stay at this horrible establishment. A total fail for The Empire hotel!
The location is a block away from central park and near subways to get you around the city. The rooms were clean and comfortable and we got a great view of the city and Lincoln Center. There were some issues with the elevators while we were there but we werent held up for too long. We were just sad that we couldnt use the fitness center due to the unusually hot weather that caused them to close it temporarily. Their rooftop is also incredible! Super friendly and efficient staff too!
We stay at The Empire Hotel whenever we come to the MET Opera. (Lincoln Center is across the street). The hotel is truly iconic: widely known and acknowledged for it’s distinctive excellence. The staff demonstrates a genuine sense of caring. Jose was exceptionally helpful when we arrived, caring for all our bags in a meticulous manner, making sure everything got to the room and greeting us coming and going during our stay. Dennis was very helpful navigating our shopping trip and always with a smile, asking us if we needed his assistance. The staff, 24/7 at the front desk were readily available to help with any questions. The Empire Rooftop Lounge is exquisite. The rooms are a little dated, but clean, plenty of towels and toiletries and wonderful housekeeping staff. We always feel welcomed and safe at the Empire.
The hotel has no amenities at all in rooms. No ice. No coffee. But what it did have was an incredibly comfortable bed and great shower. Location is unbeatable. Especially if one has to get dressed and leave hotel just to have coffee
Great location for the Upper West side and central park. Its a hotel that clearly has seen better days. It desperately needs a refurb but is clean and comfortable. The star is the rooftop bar but thats run by a separate company.
The rooms are ok. They are clean but are really showing signs of wear snd tear. Our bathroom door was warped and cracked due to water moisture. The same for the bathroom Vanity. The furniture in general is looking quite tired.Having said that the staff are excellent and very friendly and helpful. And the location is excellent for walking distance to restaurants, cafes and the subway.
The quality does not meet the marketing. The room was completely outdated and gross. Service at desk was rude, and I had to call three times after my stay to get my security deposit back. The only redeeming part of the experience was the doorman and valet service - nice guys. Not worth it in my opinion.
Lobby is beautiful and the rooms are nice. Its also in a great location. However, be aware that there isnt a coffee maker in the room and theres no coffee provided in the lobby so youll have to go elsewhere. Theres also a nightly residence fee that covers things you would expect to receive at a hotel anyway like WiFi and fitness room access.
Location, service, cleanliness all 5 star. A special mention to all the boys in the foyer, super helpful and friendly.I did find the room a little dated and required minor TLC.If you get the opportunity I recommend the roof top terrace. Beautiful atmosphere but priced to accommodate.
What an amazing hotel. Half a block and you are in times square. So many attractions are super close. We walked to the Empire State Building, Central Park, Minskoff Theatre, Julliard, Radio City. The staff is super friendly and helpful. Rooms are clean and well kept. Would definitely stay here again
Great location, 5 mins walk from central park & columbus St subway, lobby is absolutely beautiful, rooms nice and clean, fridge and safe within. Bathroom could do with a wee upgrade however clean and no issues. Would love to revisit in the future, staff more than helpful too 🥰
Disgusting!!!. Almost everyone in the lobby was trying to check out because of how horrible the conditions were. Not like the pictures.
Finding an affordable hotel so close to Central Park was amazing! Overall, it is a comfortable, good hotel. It is an old building, and the decor is steam punk, old 60s unique. The room was short on space, but it was ok. My major disappointment was the 24-hour air conditioning motors going on and on. The cheaper rooms are all in the interior walls of the building, so your view is other rooms to your left, right and across. All those AC units echoing from the walled canyon were very loud for me and non-stop. Good thing we were out sightseeing during the day! I struggled to sleep at night, though. I would not stay again as a better room is probably not in my budget. So pay less, get inconveniences! The Lincoln Center is right across the street! The restaurant next door was great (PJ Clarkes). Down the street, the Flame Diner has a terrific, NYC vibe and is open 24/7!! First time in the Big Apple, and Id like to go back. Will I stay here? Maybe... if I bring good earplugs!!
Hotel maintenance had a spill. It smelled like chorine or bleach, very strong! The first floor had a noxious odor. We ask what it was, the desk clerk would only say ‘we had a cleaning agent spill that is being cleaned up.’Upon returning from dinner the odor was in the halls and room. The staff allowed us to change rooms after we complained again that our eyes were burning and inquired again, we had a right to know what we are breathing. They were not very caring about the health and well being of there guests!!Rooms were a little unkept.I would not recommend staying at The Empire Hotel.
I stayed at The Empire Hotel and loved the experience. The location is unbeatable, right by Lincoln Center and a short walk to Central Park. The room was comfortable and had a sleek, modern look. The rooftop bar was definitely a highlight the views were awesome, and it was a great spot to unwind after a day of exploring. If you want a stylish stay in the heart of NYC, this is a great choice!
Empire hotel made us feel like at home. Checkin was a breeze, and rooms were neat. Housekeeping was amazing on a daily basis. With kids they made our rooms fresh each day. Staff was exceptional and helpful. The view from our 10th floor the best and was the crossroads of Columbus and Central Park. Pool was lovely with nice lounge chairs and cabanas. The restaurant was also great.
Cons: We couldnt check in until 3:45 even though check in time was 3. Our heat would not turn off on the room and engineering didnt show up to our room until 1130 pm to knock on the door and wake us up. Our window wouldnt close. There was blood stains on the towels.Pros: beds were comfortableGREAT LOCATION
I stayed in room 517. The carpet was older than I am. While opening the drapes and blinds, I nearly had as asthma/allergy attack from the amount of dust flying off. Not safe for kids with allergies. The staff was rude and prejudice. Location is convenient, but not worth it. Website states refrigerator in room, but it’s actually a “cooler”.
Me and my mom recently stayed at the Empire hotel for the weekend and we loved it! It’s in a great location that is close to everything and a super walkable distance from great attractions. The staff was kind and always at your service, they even upgraded our room for free! The hotel is well designed and clean. Overall we really enjoyed our stay here!
Alright, let’s talk about my stay at The Empire Hotel – that little gem nestled between Lincoln Center and Central Park. First off, the food? Chef’s kiss! I’m talking about PJ Clarke’s Restaurant – where flavor parties happen on your taste buds. From truffle-infused bites to melt-in-your-mouth delicacies, they’ve got it dialed in. I practically waltzed out of there humming a foodie anthem. But hold up – let’s chat about the drinks. Now, I’m all for adventure, but these concoctions? A bit like a jazz fusion band – unexpected notes, some hits, and a few head-scratchers. I mean, who knew you could mix elderflower with jalapeño? But hey, props for creativity. 🍹
The rooms are small but comfortable and had almost everything U needed. Good security that makes one feel safe. Not so close to restaurants and subway entrance, though. I had to order food online all of the time.
Cant beat the location and the staff is pretty nice. But for the price the rooms should not be in the state that they are. Rotten wood, peeling wallpaper and paint, horrible mold smell and dirty carpets. The only good thing was the shower water pressure and the bed which was incredible.
If you order a long time before arriving your room will be facing the back of the hotel rooms. I am not sure if you can negotiate the view before ordering a room. We got bottles of water from the front desk and theres a small fridge in the closet.
The location of this hotel is outstanding not only for any events at Lincoln Center but for just a stay on the west side with access to restaurants, the park, etc. Unfortunately the hotel itself is disappointing. The fellows at the front door/lobby were polite but the check-in staff, not so much. No eye contact, no friendly hello, just all business. They did allow early check in which I appreciated, but I was given a room with wet carpet around the cooling system, and the room smelled of mildew. They did move me to another room, and I left my phone charger, never to be seen again. The decor is sharp but the rooms show some wear especially in the bathrooms. One of the main features that enticed me to the hotel was having the restaurant up on the roof with great city views. Unfortunately it was booked for Saturday noon to 6, so my plans for dinner before Lincoln Center performance were dashed. When I tried to go in for drinks and hors d’oeuvres at other times, they told me I needed a reservation to sit outside, and tried to stuff me in a corner inside (I was alone) where the music was loud and the ambiance lacking and unappealing. I went elsewhere. This was a major disappointment. By the way hotel Front desk had nothing to say about the bar restaurant since it is privately owned.
I was really looking forward to staying here but unfortunately it was quite a disappointment. While the hotel lobby is lovely, the actual room & accommodations are unfortunately not 4 star at all. I stayed here with my partner for 3 nights in a superior king room. None of the days we were there did housekeeping come through, our heater was broken in the sense that it either had to stay completely off or the room turned into a sauna even at the lowest setting. All of the furniture was fairly old and chipped, wobbly or dirty/stained (see pictures, even stains on the lampshade), odd layout and placements (like the fridge inside of the wardrobe?), jarring wall patterns everywhere and the quality was nothing like a different 4 star hotel I had stayed in for two nights prior. The view of “the courtyard” is just a straight look into other peoples rooms (and kind of depressing) so we couldn’t keep our curtains open without accidentally making eye contact with other guests in their rooms, and our room was really dark even with all lights available on. We received the handicap accessible room though we hadn’t chosen it/didn’t request it, so bathroom was pretty outdated and didn’t have any vanity space, instead just an old rolling metal shelf beside the sink. When we asked if there was another room we could move to for all of these reasons and more (i truly never ask for this type of thing) we were met with a short response and told there was nothing they could do. While the location was good, you can definitely find better in the area for a similar price. I feel like I overpaid for a nice lobby (the bar in the lobby was closed the entire time though) but nothing else. Sad to say I won’t be returning.
Nice lobby and good location is the only nice things i can say. Parking is 3 blocks away at a garage that you have to call and ask about you can get a discount with voucher from the hotel. Rooms are small way different than the pictures. Room wasnt clean dust everywhere. They have no vending machines, coffee maker and no breakfast you will have to get all of that outside the hotel. They were very cheap with their renovations paint chipped everywhere basic wallpaper in hallways and very dark so you cant see the bad condition of the hotel. Thin walls can hear people in the hallway and the entire street. Cheap curtains and uneven floors in the rooms. Very disappointed and wont be back
This hotel is a SCAM. They failed to respond to my request for a refund. They took my money despite me cancelling my booking. Dishonest and unprofessional. Book somewhere else. AVOID AT ALL COSTS.
Have been a frequent guest at the Empire hotel as it’s so reasonably priced and room size compared to many other hotels. The location at Lincoln Center, Central Park and nearby Columbus Corcle can’t be better.Pablo, who recently checked us in couldn’t have been more accommodating for our needs, was personable and professional. Many food options are in the immediate vicinity, there is no shortage to find something for every taste and dietary need.Rooms do show their age a bit (always clean), but we’re here in the room basically to sleep and not hang out.Checkout time at noon is an added bonus
Nothing like the internet pictures. Old, not as luxurious as presented. Not worth what I paid.Service not great. Check in person was nice. Went downhill from there. Had to address a safe 3 times. Took hours to get it.Rooftop bar very hot and loud. Not enjoyable.
Location was great, employees were very helpful. I expected a small room because it’s an older hotel but we were quite comfortable with 2 queen beds. The lobby is gorgeous. The rooms need some minor upkeep .
Great location, unique old 1960s America vibe, good rooftop, but room quality left much to be desired. Both windows were astonishingly filthy. We had to replace our room key many times because it stopped working - we were told to keep it away from phones, credit cards or anything that may demagnetize it, which is a laughable requirement and most importantly an annoying one. Even after fulfilling the requirement the key was a tad faulty. When staff came to check, even a master key took a few tries.A few other things:- the table covering was peeling- the bathroom sink was too low and shallow such that when the fountain was on it would spray water everywhere. Shoddy design…- wifi was spotty
Stayed for 5 nights and 6 daysIt was a perfect location for the subway stations and easy check in process. Fatima I believe was her name, gave the best service at the front desk. The hotel also offered free bottled water at the front desk daily. If you can’t get an early check in they do hold your luggage until your room is ready. The only thing was was that when we tried calling the concierge desk from our room phone, no one picked up and we had to go straight to the desk to ask something.
It’s been a while since I felt so welcome by all of the staff at a hotel. Definitely surpasses any reputation it has gotten from being featured in gossip girl… in other words they make you feel like you’re living it rather then being where it was filmed. Full of charm, character, and endless stories to be told.
Save your money. This was possibly the WORST hotel experience ive had anywhere in the world. The room was dark and small. The bathroom was so small that you first had to sit on the toilet and then close the door in order to reach the toilet paper. Housekeeping came on some days and not on others. The front desk repeatedly assured us that our issues would be handled and they never were. One night we arrived home to a room that was exactly as we had left it 12 hours earlier. No clean towels. Beds unmade. The front desk personnel lied through their teeth, assuring us someone would come fix the thermostat (never fixed over our four day stay), come clean the room, bring an extra blanket. In ten minutes.............. Never happened. The only reason we stayed was that we were with a group.I would not stay there again if they offered me a free room.
Really not worth 300 Euro/ Dollars per night, and I would not stay here again. Location is ok and doormen were nice.Superior rooms are very small and the bathrooms are in poor order. No hot water on the first day. Followed by all lifts out of order. No coffee in the rooms. The safe didnt work and was not secured to the wall. Despite complaining to reception, i was told alot of hotels dont secure them down in case of malfunction. I ended up carrying our passports/ valuables around the city for 4 days instead.Nowhere to eat or drink in the hotel, so you need to go out. There is a roof top bar served by a separate elevator, but we were not permitted to go up because we had teenage children with us. The pool area was also closed for the season. Do yourself a favour and spend your money elsewhere.
The rooms were small but very nice and had everything you want, including a great shower and a little fridge. The towels were just ok, and the AC would be out every morning or every time I came back to my room, but it was just an issue with a breaker needing to be flipped and an easy fix every time. There was no food or room service at all because the restaurant was closed for renos, and the bar was closed every time we tried to go. Excellent location right near a subway station and the Lincoln centre.
The only good thing about this hotel is its location. Our room had black mold on the walls in the bathroom, rusted corners on all metal appliances including the bathroom door and the air conditioning unit. The place was very outdated, the wallpaper was peeling off in our room and there is no vending machine or ice machine. There was also a roach in our bathroom late at night, so I think that says enough. You’re paying for the location, price is absolutely not worth it. I will not be booking again.
All in all and even though there are a few issues, this is a decent hotel in its price range, considering it being a NYC hotel. The location is fairly good and perhaps one of the more important aspects of this hotel. It is close to a number of good restaurants, services such as pharmacies, coffee shops and more as well as good communications. Even though the hotel, and this goes for the room I stayed in, could come across as a bit worn it is at the same time clean and the staff is, from my experience, both helpful and friendly. A more troublesome issue in the room I stayed in was that every sound in the corridor outside of the room could easily be heard inside the room. One other issue that might sound less relevant but which could be troublesome for some: during my stay in the spring of 2022, the free wifi connection was hardly working at all.
I have stayed at the Empire Hotel numerous times. I always take out travel insurance to protect my stay. Last summer, I had to cancel my reservation three days prior because I broke my ankle. My insurance was not honored and the hotel would not allow me to change the dates of my stay. I just figured ok, it was short notice.A few days ago, I made a reservation for a month from today. I called today to change the date which is three weeks from today and they will not allow me to change the date or issue me a refund. I was even willing to pay a penalty so I would not lose all my money. I am NEVER staying at this hotel again. So much for the insurance policy and the accommodations of this hotel.
Decent hotel for very reasonable price.Very convenient location, across the street from Lincoln Center, less than two blocks from Fordham University Law School and Business School. Two blocks from Central Park. Lots of great restaurants in the area.Very helpful, friendly, professional staff. Room was very small but immaculately clean. (Would give 3.5 stars because of room size and tiny bathroom, but Google doesn’t give that option… so I’m giving 4.)
We ate at Rosa Mexicano at Columbus in NYC. Fantastic meal. I got to meet an amazing chef, Mike Mulcahy. We sampled several dishes, and all were outstanding. My favorite was Elote, a corn dish. Each item we had was presented in a beautiful display only to be outdone by its amazing flavor. Cocktails well balanced. Pomegranate margarita is their hallmark drink. Highly recommend.
The pros: nice lobby; amazing location for the price; nice and helpful staff. The cons:-Our first room had somebody elses belongings in it.-Our second room had no sheets, no shower curtain, phone did not work, and no mini-fridge. (All were then fixed except the phone).-Very tiny rooms, and bathroom with zero counter space.-Rooms and hallways were very HOT. We left the A/C on its lowest setting constantly and the room only got down to 71 degrees.-Shabby / run-down looking in rooms and hallways. Stains, lights missing, etc.Still, I might stay here again because of the location and price!
Pretty, Pricey, but Poor Quality. The ambiance of the lobby drew us in and provided some great photos opportunities. The hotel room was very small, the TV was outdated, no cable channels, no Netflix/Hulu or any streaming services, the room needed upgrading, the AC didn’t work, sockets weren’t fully secured to the wall, we had to REQUEST washcloths, towels, and the TV remote. The staff was friendly but the hard to reach when called from the room phone. For the price… this hotel doesn’t match up to the quality I’m accustomed to receiving.
Nice hotel, pretty spacious room, I understand you are in NY, everything is tiny, my bed was step away from the door so I could hear my noisy neighbors. The only thing that really upset me it’s when we tried to check-in before 3 pm, first time at 10am and then second time at 1:37pm we were asked to pay $50 extra for early check-in, of course they had rooms available and ready for you they just want to make extra money from you tired tourist/visitor coming from another country/state after read-eye flight. Shame! The same happened with my friends they had to pay extra as well when they checked in earlier this week.
The hotel has a good value. We had a noisy room in the first night but the staff were always friendly.Be aware of the rooms in the bottom floor facing the back - the AC machinery are very noisy
I wish that I could say that I was impressed. The hotel staff is not that friendly and the pool is tiny and overcrowded with children. My room was very clean, the bed was super comfy, and I heard no noises from the outside while I was in my room. Jacques and Eugene were the nicest staff members. The hostesses on the rooftop were not friendly at all! Oh, the views were quite gorgeous and the location is ideal!
Very nice location and easy experience to stay here. The hotel appears well maintained from what we saw. Front desk staff were very friendly and helpful! I would definitely stay here again.
We stayed her for about 5 days. The rooms are awful, everything was old, broken. This hotel needs major upgrades. Its all a hype. The location is great the lobby is pretty but the rooms. Dont waste your time here save your money. A
We just stayed for one night in this hotel and were disappointed. The room was not super ( grease stain on curtains, hole in the carpet). The bathroom is really small. We felt that we really need to leave the room as fast as possible (before the check out) since the housekeeping came three times before 12pm.
We havent stayed at this wonderful hotel, but we definitely will next time we return to New York. My daughter wanted to visit it because they filmed scenes from a very serious film there, Gossip girl.
Worst hotel I have ever been to, and not clean ! And I’ve been to some. Huge water leak on the freaking ceiling. Causing all of my makeup to be drowned. Their solution? They downgraded us to a room on a lower floor and no curtains ! I’ve never seen a customer service care less about their customers. The manager spoke incredibly poorly to me. Even guests next to me were chocked. Do any other hotel for your own good
I had been looking forward to staying at this hotel for months and was sorely disappointed. We were allocated a room on the 1st floor over looking air vents. At reception we asked to room move to a room with a view the next day which was agreed. Went down to reception the next day to change rooms and they had no idea what we were talking about. Instead of looking into it, they got defensive and rude & said they couldn’t do anything. Their rudeness left me upset and considering we paid over $1000 for 3 nights for a room looking at air vents was a kick in the teeth. The rooms and bathroom are tiny, so is the pool!I gave 2 stars as the housekeeping & door staff were nice and friendly, the bed was comfy and the hotel was in a good location.
