Lively old school pub with traditional British and American food. Its typically pretty crowded in the bar area, but I was able to get a table on two separate occasions during week of Xmas. They go all out on Xmas decorations. Service can be a little slow, due to how busy they are, but everyone is friendly and the food is very good.Definitely worth stopping in for a quick drink/bite, especially if youre staying at the W hotel nearby

This is definitely an iconic place that you should add to your list when visiting New York City. The food is not great, but it’s okay. The ambience and the atmosphere makes it feel like you’re going back in time. It’s amazing to see all the pictures all around the place of all the artists 🧑‍🎨 iand famous people that at some point dined here. This is my second time dining here and I willdefinitely come back.

Petes Tavern, a historic landmark in Gramercy, has an undeniable charm and ambiance that transports you to a bygone era. The wood-paneled walls, vintage decor, and warm lighting create an inviting atmosphere that speaks to its storied past. However, while the setting feels special, the food itself left us underwhelmed. We ordered the Gramercy Burger and fish and chips, both classic pub choices. Unfortunately, neither dish was served hot, and the flavors were somewhat underwhelming.Pete’s Tavern is worth a visit for its ambiance and history alone, but if youre looking for a standout meal, it might be best to keep expectations moderate.

Walk into Petes Tavern and you cant help but get the feeling of an historical event happening before your eyes. Well it did for me... the cozy, rustic ornate decor is a real and welcoming atmosphere as are the greeters and servers who work here. We were even fortunate to meet Pete the owner (not his real name) and share a few memories when he dropped off a couple beers to our table.Petes Tavern is a pleasant blast from the past and we were so glad to have lunch here! The menu is full of Irish specialties, like shepherds pie, chicken pot pie, fish and chips, etc. The tavern ale was smooth and refreshing, the perfect pairing for our lunch. Lots of others on tap including wines and spirits ( see pics ). Keep in mind this is a bar first and restaurant second. Looking back on our selections although they were good I feel a handheld or burger would have been the better choice. Even though all our picks were very good on their own, however, together since we shared everything they didnt complement each other. ( Hence one less star for the limited lunch menu and our fault for the selections) But, with that said, the gnocchi (cooked well) with spinach pesto was a pleasant surprise, nice flavor, served hot, and something we would recommend, as we would the zucchini chips too and onion rings, both very good.

We stopped in to see where O. Henry hung out so many years ago. Legend has it that he wrote his short story “The Gift of the Magi” in the second booth. They have many framed pieces to honor the famous author. Our bartender, Juan, was very friendly and helpful, and we really enjoyed the whole experience!

5 Stars all around. We had a large party reservation this past weekend while in town to celebrate Thanksgiving. Gary was extremely responsive in helping with the reservation during their busiest time of the year. Pictures don’t do the Christmas decor justice, the food was stellar all around, and the overall mix of locals and tourists made for a fun and lively atmosphere. The cherry on top was our server Ernest, who made our visit extra special and treated our crazy crew like family. We cannot wait to return next time we’re in NYC.

I’ve been visiting Pete’s Tavern on and off for 10+ years now. I even lived just down the street on 18th and 1st for a bit and visited even more frequently at that time. So, it is safe to say, this review comes with a nostalgia bias.I’m surprised I hadn’t left a review before but maybe it was on an old account or something. Regardless, here are some details from my most recent visit in 2024.We started with a glass of the house ale! It tastes lighter than it looks. I’m not a fan of dark heavy beers so this hit the spot for me.On this particular visit we skipped the appetizers, however, I’ve had their Baked Truffle Mac & Cheese and Homemade Veal Meatballs fairly recently and enjoyed them! For dinner, our group had the Gnocchi Spinach Pesto, Chicken Parmigiana, and Three BBQ Brisket Sliders. All were great! Gnocchi was great for any vegetarians in your group. The Chicken Parm was a big dish and I probably should have had leftovers but I was starving.Lastly, I love the updated bathrooms! Although I appreciate the older bar bathrooms sometimes, it was nice to have an easy and clean bathroom experience.I hope you enjoy as much as I do should you visit!

I just wanted to take a moment to thank Pete’s Tavern and Gary, the manager. My partner and I and two dear friends from London met for a long overdue reunion recently, and we had a truly wonderful time at Pete’s.Every single one in our small party of four thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. And my friends said that the porterhouse for two was the Best steak they ever had. I had the NY strip, which was an excellent cut of meat cooked to perfection. And my partner had the eggplant parmigiana, which she said was some of the best she’s had.If I haven’t already raved enough, I really must rave about our very lovely server Jenna. She was hands down outstanding! She kept the mood at the table light, fun, and we sure laughed a lot that evening. And she was a really good sport because we teased her often throughout the evening. Jenna was a really fun person to share the evening with. She thoroughly enhanced the atmosphere and conversation.Lastly, I am a longtime fan of Pete’s Tavern. And I am a Huge fan! I’ve been coming here since 1996 and fell in love with the tavern way back then. My partner and I love this establishment so much that we’ve spent several very special anniversaries there and Pete’s always surpassed expectations. Further, the bar and dining rooms are very beautiful, so it’s a really pleasant ambiance. Also, Gary, the manager is an absolute pleasure to work with. I can’t say enough about him or this venue.

My wife and I have been coming to Pete’s for about 8-9 years now. We go here every December as it’s become a holiday tradition. We also hit it up a few times throughout the year as well, although not always for food. Our last time in was the most disappointing time we’ve had here. They’ve removed some of their apps that we enjoyed, clams casino, oysters Rockefeller, and shrimp cocktail. Those were classics that we always looked forward to getting. I won’t comment on how busy it gets around the holiday season, that’s normal and they have a relatively straight forward wait system. If that’s not your scene then don’t go here. We love it. This time was weird though. When we went to be seated the host asked if the table was ok, it was in the middle room up against the wall somewhat next to another table. I responded with “yeah that’s fine” to which he says “good that’s all I got.” Like obviously they’re slammed but it was a weird thing to say. Owe were disappointed as I mentioned before they reduced their appetizer menu. I order a strip steak this time and my wife got Chicken Milanese. The food was great per the norm. My 4 stars on the rating for the food is for the removal of some of the menu items. It’s always cooked well. I’ve had burgers, pasta, fish & chips in years past and it’s all what you expect and well executed. The service this time around was a bit less than up to par as well. We were greeted after a while but then it took time for our waitress to come back around to get our food orders. Also I kept running out of water. She was always hovering around the room but felt like we were never being tended to which was disappointing. This is the first time we’ve ever experienced as usually service is top notch. Maybe it was a bad night, I’ll put it down to that, but it didn’t feel like that given she seemed to be tending to other tables. Overall feels like it went down a bit due to reduced menu items and also the service. Won’t stop me from going back yet but it’s disappointing to see.

I went for a birthday dinner and have to say it was a great experience. At first glance, the place does look like a bar but once you emerge through that into the back there’s a really nice dining area. My friend told me they are known for their cheeseburger so I ordered that and it was delicious. 10/10 recommend the cheeseburger I haven’t had one that good in years. Other than that service was pretty great and the guy was nice and accommodating for our large group. It was a birthday and they did make us pay for the cake and ice cream, which unfortunately seems to be a thing now at restaurants. Not a fan. Other than that, the food was delicious and if you’re going for drinks after it’s a great place to eat and then immediately head to bar. Great ambiance as well.

I sat at this pub most nights during the week, mainly because it was the closest ‘pub’ with enough people to create an atmosphere (I will give it that at least). However, I returned tonight to be aggressively confronted by their staff for sitting outside - which I had done all week and tonight was no different, except I arrived at 9pm rather than earlier. A woman marched up to me, immediately shouting that she had not seated me there herself, despite me getting permission from staff inside. She said if I wasn’t ordering food then I wasn’t allowed a seat, all in a very confrontational and embarrassing manner in front of other customers as if I had committed a crime. I explained the situation but she raised her voice further and was clearly angry. She then proceeded to involve a security guard who told me that despite being a paying customer (might I add, $80 for 3 drinks), I was not welcome to sit down. I felt angry and embarrassed to be treated so poorly and in such a humiliating manner, as a paying customer. I was told that unless I would order food or another round of drinks on the spot, I had to move somewhere else.If there had been a polite approach that was at least understanding or consistent with previous nights, I may not have minded so much. However, I received blunt, rude service from the start which made me resent spending my money at this bar.I will say, this tavern lulls you in with its claims of being the ‘oldest bar’ in NYC but the prices are anything but authentic. I will definitely not be returning after tonight.

It was still a surprise for them. Their only vegan options were salads and a beyond burger. I would say that doesnt really count as vegan options as you have to make sure you say dont include cheese and some dressings are not veganThey really should update that on their website as it is deceiving.Everything else was great for the rest of us that werent vegan. Pretty good place! I had the linguine bolognese and although it wasn’t spectacular, it got the job done. The pasta was cooked well, but the sauce was very light, so the dish wasn’t very flavorful. The fried calamari was also good, but it wasn’t anything special either. I had a side of mashed potatoes, and they were tasty, but I have a feeling they weren’t very fresh. I did happen to really like the ocean themed dish that my meal came in, though! I thought that the dynamic of the place was a little strange; there was a bar space with a few surrounding tables, as well as a dining room. This definitely isn’t unusual in the city, but it felt a bit too cramped for this to be happening. Overall, it was a good dinner, but don’t expect outstanding things from here. Oh, it is the oldest bar in continuous operation in NYC, which I thought was a pretty cool thing.

As a New York City native, saying this is my favorite restaurant means a LOT. My family has been coming here since my parents moved to America in 1989, and its still as welcoming as ever (even though the prices have risen over the years). The service is prompt and respectful, and the place is clean. As the bar is separate from the dining room, its possible to have a meal without worrying about any usual pub shenanigans even tho the bar is usually orderly anyway, albeit sometimes very crowded. Theres an additional back room for reservations, or when the place is nearing capacity. There are pictures throughout the dining rooms and in the hallway before the bathrooms of notable figures whove been to the establishment, so its great for film fans and tourists! Theres also enclosed outdoor dining, however I havent eaten there myself. My only complaint regarding the structure of Petes would be the inaccessibility of the bathroom for people with disabilities, as its down a set of tiny stairs. The bathrooms themselves are also small, only two stalls and in a generally small room.Lunch and dinner here is SCRUMPTIOUS! You can order essentially anything here and be delighted with your meal!!! Dishes are made from quality ingredients and cooked in your preferred fashion. The OHenry steak is a great choice to share between two-three people. Theres also a house special beer!Petes is great for celebrations, and for giving a tourist a digestible experience of the local New York life.

We were here yesterday after we had our friends birthday brunch in Tribeca. Basically, the birthday boy is a big history buff and have always loved Petes Tavern. Sold us on the whole Christmasy vibe as well so we went around 4PM and the place was packed, on a Sunday and one of the coldest days this season so far, must mean its pretty good.Since it was super packed, we had to be seated at like the third/back room and because we needed a long table for our group. I think we were there for almost 5 hours before we moved somewhere for dinner. Overall, great music, lots of celebrity and famous peoples pics all over as decor, youre there for the history. The drinks were overflowing and was just okay. Prices were standard downtown $15 average. Again, youre there for the history. And we were there as a group of friends who love each others company so that adds up to the experience. Sam attended to us and she was cool. The only gripe I had is some parts of the place smelled really awful especially as you walk down the stairs to the rest rooms. They should really fix that.

Lower east side classic. I grew up on 19th street a couple blocks from Petes. It was a favorite place that my parents would go to in the 1960s and it has seemingly only gotten better with more time. It has been here on 18th street since 1864.Petes is one of the oldest original bars in NYC. As a matter of fact it is probably the longest continuously running bar establishment overall. My mom was a big deal in NYC during the height of the Madison Avenue golden age of the advertising era (think Mad Men) and she would also take me to PJ Clarkes. PJs has fallen into neglect and disrepair, a shadow of its former glory. Sad but is what it is. This review is about Petes which has used its age and charm to warm visitors and locals alike.I have not eaten here in years and not reviewing the foods this trip. We were walking through the neighborhood and decided to stop in for a couple drinks and to warm-up a bit. The holiday trimmings were still up which added an amazing warmth and welcoming feel to the place. If you can get here before they take the decorations down do, otherwise come back next year I am sure you will be welcomed as we were.Decent bourbon selection, whiskeys and ryes a bit less. They do have a great drink menu and some good beers on draft. The pours are solid, value is pretty good, and it was great to see a mixed crowd of ages at the bar and at the tables near the bar. Bar food menu looked typical of what you might expect at a bar like Petes. There is also a tablecloth dining room in the back that is well separated from the bar area and has its own unique feel.Petes is a class act tavern with well kept fixtures, a sense of whimsy, and the original woodwork is well cared for. Clearly there is pride in ownership and folks that work here care about what Petes is; a great neighborhood place that welcomes everyone. I hope I can come back when I am 120 :).

Been coming to this place for 7 years. First time back since Covid. Food is amazing. Service is amazing. The ambiance is also as “old school NY” you will find in the area. Gramercy Park is a great area, but not many gems like this around.Had the pleasure of meeting Juan and the rest of the team at the bar. Best service I could ask for from a new crew. Thank you.PS. That may be the reason they are the oldest pub in the city. And the Bourbon/Scotch/Whiskey list is proper…

We visited on Christmas Adam and were looking for a place with some Christmas ambiance. We were not disappointed. They had lights on the ceiling and Christmas displays around the location. One of the oldest taverns in NY, allegedly O’Henry wrote “The Gift Of The Magi” in one of the booths inside. We did not have a reservation but were seated pretty quickly. The server told us they are known for their burgers. We all tried one. I considered it one of the best I have had overall.

We visited this place on a rainy Sat afternoon. We were seated in the back, away from the noisy pick-up bar scene. The place is a NY landmark and, as the walls attest, is popular with celebrities. I wish I could say the food was as good as the ambiance. The grilled cheeseburger, chicken pot pie, and salad were cumulatively unspectacular . The pot pie was hot but tasteless. The cheeseburger bun was stale, dry, crumbly and of low quality. The burger itself was acceptable, but not special. We each had drinks (about $17 each); again , nothing to write home about and expensive considering the quality was mediocre. The best thing we ate was the baked apple crumble with vanilla ice cream, but there was hardly any baked apple. Somebody ate half of the apple before it arrived at our table. Service tilted toward slow but was not really an issue. I would come back to Petes, but I would keep my expectations low for the food. The benches we sat on were hard and uncomfortable. Great place to socialize, though, especially if your 30+. In sum, Petes falls into a growing category of restaurants that serve food, but are near clueless as to how to cook and make their dishes taste unique.

I have to admit of all the times Ive been to New York. I finally realized that if you want good food and a good place to eat, you got to get away from times square. Wife and I went up for the weekend with our son to have a nice little Christmas getaway and shop and eat. The restaurant we wanted to eat at was completely booked so we walked on over to Petes. They were absolutely packed, thought we wouldnt be able to get in but when we spoke to the host, they looked at their computer. Said follow me, took us upstairs to a very quiet. Very nice. Almost private room that had a couple other people eating dinner. The atmosphere was awesome, obviously being a week before Christmas, the place was decked out with all kinds of lights and ornaments and decorations and just really, really in the spirit of the holidays. I had the Petes burger which was a very tasty burger. And the fried mozzarella was out of this world. Great people, very nice, and good food.

We had reservations for 12pm but unfortunately we were put in the back on the restaurant, almost hidden, in a very uncomfortable and dark place with our little kids. We could not move around, nor enjoy the decorations at all neither take proper pictures. The food was underwhelming at most: my husband, who has worked as a line cook for burgers, ordered one and told me the bread was frozen since the skin broke off and separated from the bun. He did not finish it. I ordered the shepherd pie and it was extremely small for $25. I ate it all and could have eaten another one. Kid ordered spaghetti from the kid menu. I know you’re paying city prices but at $131 with tips it felt like a rip off for such a terrible experience. I should have asked for the manager but we were in a hurry and with two small kids I didn’t have extra time on my hands. Such a shame! I was looking forward to have a great holiday experience and it was ruined. We won’t be back and we cannot recommend it.

From the outside, Pete’s looked like a nice cozy neighborhood spot, so we decided to check it out. Little did we know this was one of the oldest bars in New York and a local favorite. The meat lasagna was some of the best that I’ve had. Homemade and delicious. I would absolutely recommend it.The chicken parm was wonderful as well, albeit a little on the plain side. Their sauce was fresh and delicious but it seemed like it was just missing a little something. That said, I would absolutely go back and I would get that if I were in the mood for chicken parm. But I’m not sure I could go back without getting that lasagna.Their homemade egg nog was delicious as well.

I love Petes (have frequented for 15+ years) but the service has gotten very bad, not the worst, but way below mediocre. We went on a Friday at 1. Empty and yet the service was incredibly slow. The staff in the suits and skirts were lounging in the corners scrolling through their phone. If you interrupted their scrolling and asked for help they would go fetch the serving staff, who never checked in. The few people who were seated had to physically leave their seats and find someone to take an order. Disorganized, rude, etc. Food and drinks are still good! I am only posting this because I hope whoever is in charge doesnt let Petes sink further.

I wanted to like this place. The christmas decorations were great and really nice to sit amongst. However, the service was really bad. Our waiter barely attended to us and on top of that, was rude. At the end of our night, we paid AND tipped and then the waiter came back and said we didn’t tip enough and he needs that money to pay the rest of his staff. I was honestly flabbergasted. I always tip even if service isn’t up to my expectations (as it was in this case) but it isn’t my job as a customer to tip extra to pay YOUR staff and especially if you didn’t provide me with even mildly mediocre service. We tipped anyway but it honestly was so shocking - if you need people to tip so bad so you can pay your staff then as a manager and bar, you are doing something wrong.

My friend was livid but didnt say anything. I understand the rule when its busy and full, but when the place is empty.... Ive only been here a few times even though I live nearby. Its been ok. Walking up to this place I knew there was something more to it, but I didnt know what to expect when I arrived there. I thought it was just a regular bar claiming to be around for many years, but it turned out to be much more than just a bar. There is an actual restaurant experience inside with some very delicious food. If you enter inside youll find many pictures of famous celebrities that have visited the establishment throughout all the years.I went during Christmas time so it was very packed and busy but it just contributed to the holiday cheer. During the holidays they hang nothing but red Christmas lights on the ceiling so it gives off this red glow inside the bar, very cool. If you were to order pasta here I would encourage you to get the penne a la vodka, probably the best pasta dish I got to try there, I would 100% go back for it. Im not a big drinker, but I ended up ordering their Irish Coffee which resulted in being delicious since it had some bourbon and whipped cream followed by a hot toddy. Thanks for the service, I hope to see you all soon.

I think the staff are trained with this knowledge, because there’s no other explanation in how they treat customers. My family has had an apt around the corner since the 70s and I’ve been coming here all of my life. Yet I have never been treated as poorly as i was treated last weekend. The man next me was also treated poorly and he had apparently been going there for 50 years.I was SCREAMED AT by two waiters simply for walking through the restaurant “unattended”. (Apparently a host needs to “guide” you through?) A young waitress with glasses then proceeded to double down on her behavior and went behind the hostess stand to loudly complain about me. I was also “scolded” by the male waiter who came at me like I should have known this rule. The man next to my table who was also yelled at, told me that when he asked his waiter if he could take his steak back bc it was basically raw, the waiter suggested giving him his money back because he “probably won’t like the steak”.What a horrible experience. This is definitely a top down management problem. Embarrassing staff and behavior.

Food, dessert, drinks and energy was perfection 🥰Our server Chris delivered on the experience 🙌🏾My buddy and I went for dinner, but didnt have a reservation and were about to leave because of the seating availability that they had. Chris peeped the whole situation and grabbed us to tell us one of his tables was leaving. He clearly takes pride in what he does and everyone else was also very accommodating. Will definitely return again.

Overpriced. Bad drinks. Horrible waiter. The place was cute yes. But server was rude, condescending, and so mean for no reason. We were nothing but polite. The drinks and the food is so over priced- even for NYC. Worst martini Ive gotten in the city. It was also a red flag that there were so many empty tables on a Thursday night AND halloween night. I do not recommend this restaurant, there are many other taverns with better prices with better food/drinks and nicer staff. I will not be going back and will not suggest this restaurant to any friends here or friends visiting. Worst martini Ive gotten in the city and he wouldnt let me return it.If the restaurant is reading this -whoever the waiter was in the blue robe with cats and dogs and lipstick on needs a serious attitude adjustment.

One of the oldest pubs in NYC and always has a pleasurable experience to have drinks. The menu is just as good. Keeping in mind the historical value, Atmosphere is awesome and better during the Christmas season

Great old time restaurant and bar. Rustic atmosphere and decor make it a nice stop. Food is good. Waiters and staff super friendly. If you like the murray hill section, make this a stop. You wont be dissatisfied. Plenty of seating either at a table or at the bar. Weather permits, they have outdoor seating. Good menu from appetizers to main cources . Full bar and plenty of different brews to choose from if your into a beer. Put it on your list , its a part of NYC HISTORYITS A LANDMARK.

Service was excellent. Seated right away. Waiter was super nice and attentive. Food was good. We got the ahi spring rolls, wings, and coconut shrimp to start. I had the fish and chips. Everything was excellent!

Came here for lunch with a friend who works in the area and he shared how much history they had. The waitress was kind and attentive. We both ordered the open faced salmon sandwich and drinks. The sandwich came with sliced avocado which was fresh. Unfortunately the salmon gave off a smell like it had been going bad or hadn’t been cleaned well (squeeze some lime/lemon over it). The rose sangria was recently added to the menu and it was delicious. I would come back for drinks.
