The service was perfect and the food very delicious. They also allow split checks. We were a group of 14 people who went on hike and everyone was able to pay separately. I highly recommend.
Kismat in Washington Heights is a true gem! The food is fantastic, offering flavorful and authentic Indian dishes. The service was equally delightful—attentive and warm without being intrusive. But what really sets Kismat apart is its lively weekend vibe. On Friday evenings, the restaurant transforms into a live jazz bar, filling the space with smooth tunes and a cozy yet energetic ambiance. Later, the vibe shifts to karaoke, making it the perfect spot for a fun night out with friends. And let’s talk about their happy hour—it runs from 1 pm to 8 pm daily! Yes, you read that right. Seven full hours of excellent deals to enjoy their amazing drinks.Great food, friendly service, live music, and unbeatable happy hour—what more could you ask for? Kismat truly delivers a top-notch dining and entertainment experience.
It’s a local gem. Definitely underrated Indian restaurant. The food and service is in great shape! I had take out first recommended by my bf. It was memorable then we went there in person. We ordered bunch of food. They all great! Go try it out.
Dude… The tamarind sauce they have? Its soo good, the frozen margaritas hit the spot and I had the Salmon Tandoori for lunch..10/10 it was a big piece of fresh salmon in a killer marinade and some of the softest naan I’ve ever had.I was the first customer there and was surprised how peaceful the atmosphere was. The owner Sam was really nice and inviting, and my waiter was quick and friendly.I would definitely recommend this spot to all my friends and family!
Our food choice is Chicken Tikka Marsala, Chicken Seafood Marsala and the Seafood Biryani. It has changed a lot, maybe even more. Marsala taste to salty. Cant taste the tomato sauce and the Biryani use to have spinach in it. Not anymore. Its probably the Chefs have change a few times and have their methods or they are cutting down on ingredients. I think its the Chefs. I gone here many times to give it a chance. Our food choices do not taste as great as it use to be.
Best Indian food in Washington Heights. Anytime I am in Northern Manhattan, I try to enjoy Indian food at Kismat. I like the Samosa and Tandoori. They make great Biryanis as well.
Want to eat Indian food? Don’t go to Kismat!Unless you want stale condiments, salads, roti loaded with flour on top of pathetic service. We ordered matar paneer but could only swim in a sea of matar, lol.Not worth the price.
Kismat had been a favorite in the Washington Heights neighborhood for as long as I can remember, back when they were half the size they are today. I just had a wonderful dinner experience there with my mom and my dog. It is a wonderful family owned business that offers delicious food and a great happy hour. Although they always had a popular outdoor seating option, during covid they expanded the outdoor seating area and it is comfortable, family and dog friendly. My favorite entree is the salmon and spinach special, it is delicious and generous with their servings of salmon and creamy spinach. Of course an Indian meal isnt complete without an assortment of breads such as my favorite garlic naan. I also highly recommend the mango lassi, but I like to order it to-go and have it separately because otherwise it can fill you up quickly. Overall, such a fantastic restaurant that is perfect whether on a date, with family and friends, or enjoying a drink quietly alone.
Never imagined the food could be this bad. Went for dinner , ordered paneer chilly and tandoori mixed grill. Paneer chilly was served in a chutney bowl. Never ever imagined appetizer portions could be so small. It was so spicy that you could barely eat it. Mix grill had 6 pieces of chicken. Again a very small portion for $23 appetizer.Ordered Dal makhni (black lentils) which cameOut to be super sweet. Chicken curry was ok. Changed dal to Gobi mutter (cauliflower and peas), peas were all frozen and cold. It was bland.Had tandoori naan, again on the sweeter side along with garlic naan.Overall, would avoid this restaurant for Indian food.
This is hands-down the worst Indian food Ive ever eaten in my life. Ive had better Indian food in an airport. The daal tasted like baked beans from a can, like barbecue sauce. The naan was soggy and bland. The paneer tasted old. The cocktails tasted like a mix of bottom shelf well and red #40. Im pretty forgiving when it comes to cheap food, but for two entrees and two cocktails we paid nearly $90 - not including tax or tip! The servers attitude seemed to suggest that he was both aware of and unapologetic about the poor quality food and drink. Id have had a better experience eating microwaved tasty bite curry from food town and drinking Georgi vodka with Kool aid at home for a quarter of the cost. Wow.
If you like northern Indian food then you should visit this place. The best Indian food Ive had in a long time. The service was ok ok. Food quality was amazing here. But food was not spicey. I had visited this place with my friends. Everyone liked the food. They serve you rice and pulse as complementary and that was very tasty. But food was so costly I think may be because of New York as cost of living in New York is high. They have an ample number of vegetarian food. I would recommend this place without a doubt to anyone.
Worst food I have tried in NY City. Its not indian. The chicken tikka masala tastes like anything but it, the dhal has more beans than lentils.
A restaurant with potential but offers very few choices in high priced all you can eat buffet. Buffet included small reheated samosas, burnt out naans, two veg sides, two chicken sides, one egg masala and basmati. I am a vegetarian and all I could eat were one appetizer and two sides with some basmati rice. #fail
The quantity of food was decent for two people to share. Samosa was a bit oily. In Malai kofta, I am not sure what were the Kofta made of but they tasted uncooked. Naan bread was hard. Roti was delicious and freshly-made.We went for dinner and they had live music on a Tuesday evening. The music was loud for that space. I preferred a peaceful dinner after a work day.Overall, a fairly decent experience!!!
This place was very cozy and comfortable and had amazing food at an affordable price (I had the beef masala lunch special). The customer service was great, and the decorations and lighting made the dining experience calm and soothing. Lastly, we asked for the food to be as mild as possible, and it absolutely was!
THE BEST FOOD EVER. My family first time Indian food and it was amazing. Sam was the best on the drinks and the service was hands on our new favorite spot. The Caldwell’s 🩷
Stopped on a whim and it was quite good. Chilli cheese garlic Naan was a pleasant surprise. Dessert was great too. Aunties were quite friendly. Would recommend
Great food… service and prices. Loved it. ♥️🙏😀
Was excited to come back to Kismat after a few years, but sad to see how its changed. Food tasted like it was at least a few days old and was over $50 for two entrees. They have a C health rating. Ended up being unable to eat more than a few bites. Wont be returning, sadly.
Food is fine but nearly 2 hours for delivery on a week night? Ridulous. Won’t be ordering again.
Ordered to go because Id heard good things about this place. It was disappointing. The bread (cheese poori and naan ) tasted like theyd been made a week ago. The Eggplant Bahartha was unseasoned and might as well have been oatmeal. The basmati rice and the lemon and mango pickles were great, but both of those I can do well myself. Lamb was full of chunks of tomato, may well as been called tomato curry (I know lambs expensive, but seriously...) Almost $70 for stale bread and a mostly vegetarian meal is unacceptable. Oh, and the raita. You do know what raita is? Because I got melted ice cream with grated cucumber. Never again. A waste of money. It would be better for me to fly to the UK where there is a higher class Indian restaurant in every small town than eat here again.
The best bar and restaurant in the Heights. Spicy food. Live Music. Craft Cocktails you cant get anywhere else. They treat you like family.
Had a wonderful evening filled with yummy food last Friday. It was a feel good dinner with friends of 40yrs plus. Our waiter and owner made us feel at home, providing expectional service. The owner in conversation, learned two us had birthdays earlier and another one us Monday, to help us celebrate she celebrate all 4 of us with delicious mango ice cream with a candle. We had many laughs, and crested a new memories. Yes, birthday wishes and delicious food. Thanks again!
Food was great, drinks should be stronger but it taste good. Nice quiet place.
Food was... not great. Got the chicken masala lunch special for delivery. It came with a samosa and some naan as well. The chicken masala was just so lacking in flavor, and the naan was pretty soggy and unappealing. I understand that delivery will make naan soggier and that it is unavoidable, but it just lacked so much flavor and was way too doughy. Tasted like the chef may have either given up, or as if he was way too busy to put effort into the food. However, delivery was ordered around noon on a weekday, so Im not sure how they could have been THAT busy. My daughter and husband also agreed with these sentiments. The only saving grace was their samosa. It was delicious and well-spiced. Cannot speak on the service and atmosphere since it was delivery.
Great food, best bar in the hood, very supportive of live music. One of my favorite places in NYC.
WORST Indian food in New York. They dont know how to cook chat, Rogan josh or Aloo paratha. The sauce seemed very stale. The chef needs to learn first. Whatever he cooked, is not Indian food. All the dishes were sweet, not spicy. The plates and utensils looked very dirty. I told them to wash again but they still looked like those were made in the 1980s. The server was very unprofessional and acted like he is working in a Dhaba, no manners. The bill was hand written like a local desi hotel. Ive never seen these bills in NY. It looked like they made up a number to adjust the tax and bills. Very weird experience. Please stay away with a 10 feet limbo pole from this place.
Weve been here many times over the last couple years and its always fantastic.
A community staple serving authentic Indian Food. The dishes were made to perfection. The poori with cheese could have been larger and more flavorful among with the other bread selections.Service was attentive and employees wore masks.Fair pricing for dinner for two. Definitely recommend Kismat if you’re in Northern Manhattan.
Weve been here many times and its always been lovely and delicious. This time though we hosted my father-in-laws memorial here and they were so kind and wonderful. They had a great projector set up for us for displaying photos and a PA system so people could give remembrances. The food was wonderful and they were all so very kind to us. I highly recommend Kismat and Sammie (and all the other lovely folks working there) whether for lunch, dinner or special events.
Ive been here before and after the renovation for my Grandmas birthday (she loves Indian food). I enjoyed my visit both times. The food is always very good and I like the buffet style setup they now have. I wish there were more spicy options though...I like my food hot! Still the service is always great and the food always delicious. Plus, they are always so welcoming and good to us even though we can be a large, loud group.
Hit and missFriendly neighbourhood restaurant, nice atmosphere. The food quality is varied. We enjoyed our eggplant curry, and were told it’s “because it’s fresh”.Lots of other food including the rice and some vegetables were clearly microwaved, and the frozen items they used (like the peas) were not properly cooked.Come if in the neighbourhood, ask for what’s fresh. I wouldn’t travel here.
I’m so sorry but I ordered the chicken biryani and it was so tasteless…the chicken was rubbery with barely any flavor. The red sauce they gave me saved it a little but there was quite literally no seasoning and they added peas (some of them were hard) 😭 The garlic naan was okay, tasted a little too sweet for me
Having been to this restaurant before, it was the spot I chose to celebrate my wifes 50th Birthday party. I used their online service to make reservations and that was a cinch to do. I called the restaurant a few days before the party to make sure that the reservation had in fact been placed, even though I did receive a confirmation email.Street parking can be tricky but there is a parking garage around the corner and it only cost $25 for 4 hours.Once inside, the table for our party was all setup and awaiting the guests. I did bring a cake which the waiter carried off until it was time.Drinks, appetizers, and entrees were all placed and after getting lost in conversation, the appetizers began showing up which was rather quick! The entrees came out about 30 minutes later and everything, I mean EVERYTHING, was amazing! There were a few leftovers which were packed up to go.The cake was brought out and we celebrated. After having the cake, we just kicked back and enjoyed the atmosphere and had a great time. We werent rushed to leave, which was really nice.Kudos to the waiter who sat at an empty table and entertained my wifes 3 year old niece, showing her how to use a calculator.Amazing food, amazing staff! Do yourself a favor and give them a try. You will not be disappointed!Sidenote: The green sauce they serve is amazing and as one of our guests put it...The green sauce is LIFE!
The most mediocre Indian food. Samosa was greasy, seemed like it had been fried twice. Chicken Saag - not much chicken and very little flavor. Lamb Kori Kebab was decent but the Garlic Naan we ordered had no garlic and it was stale on the corners. Definitely seemed like it had been baked a while ago and reheated. The rice was well cooked but I feel like if Im complementing the rice then things must be bad. So disappointing and for $60? Never again!
Placed an order, food was on a decent time. But let me tell you I will never buy Indian food from this place. I order the chicken Mas. Just disgusting, it was like a soup with Yellow coloring, No taste at all. On top of food being horrible, it was 25 dollars so over prize with no utensils or napkins.
Some of the best Indian food Ive had in a long time. The service was wonderfully attentive. The quality of food was amazing. I frequently have trouble getting food as spicy as I ask for, but there was no problem and the food came out exactly as I wanted. They have an ample number of vegetarian options and landed anything that is vegan and/or gluten free. I would recommend this with out a doubt to anyone. Even if youre staying downtown.
The quality of the food in this restaurant is not close to even average and too expensive for the portions they serve you. Before, at least the service included an accompaniment that were eliminated according to them due to inflation.
I have eaten at more than 20 different Indian restaurants on the East Coast and this was by far one of the most disappointing. The food was average at best... it was just bland, plain and simple... bland... I ended up having to use the chutney given for the appetizers just to get my taste buds going. As per the service... Meh... the gentleman at the front of the house was nice and pleasant but it was clear that he had not been trained properly. It is standard practice to bring out serving spoons for the multiple dishes I ordered but I was left asking for more spoons and when I asked... I was handed one (I ordered THREE entrees).I understand this restaurant is going through some physical renovations and I am very appreciative of that but it should not impact the quality of the food/service. I wish them the best of luck in the future.
Kismat has been a favorite for decades. A friend and I order take out at her place since Im out of the nab. My favorite is the creamy lamb kurma. Good doughy, which a touch of char spots Nan bread. Nicely flavored pakoras (or bhajis called elsewhere). Yummy tasting tandoori chicken. Still highly recommend after ?30+ years.
Food is delicious! We go there when we want to treat ourselves to healthy, homemade quality, delicious food. Every entree comes with two small side dishes (lentil soup and cabbage) that are very nurturing. Happy hour is long and the appetizers are very tasty. I recommend papadum and chickpea dishes. The staff is attentive and kind. Service is very good. Hands down our favorite Indian restaurant in NYC.
Kismat is an exquisite dining experience. They have the best Indian food Ive ever had. Their prices are very competitive, and the staff is among the nicest and most attentive I have experienced in this sector of the service industry. A welcome addition is their new Sunday buffet complete with everyones favorites. The food is fresh, delicious, and it is extremely obvious the chef and owners take pride in what they serve to their customers. The spice level is mild which can be elevated if you like to live dangerously, making this a safe place to try the cuisine for the first time. I eat here regularly and will continue to do so.
I would give it zero if I could. The food, although they said they don’t add sugar in the curry, was sweet. The spice and sweet taste don’t go well for curries. I would not recommend it for someone who has had and love authentic Indian food.
The food is delicious although their size portions have diminished throughout the years. The price is also affordable for most household budgets. The staff and service can use some polishing, but its a nice place to go and add a little variety any day of the week.
Had Biryani and loved it. Also had rice pudding, and the pistachios ice cream was delicious too😍
Every time I’m in NY, I go to Kismat. They put their unique touch on Indian food and it is amazing. The service is wonderful, they really take their time to make you feel welcome and satisfied with your food. I would 100% recommended!
My partner and I have been enjoying Kismat for the past 10 years, the entirety of our relationship! Before, we were always satisfied with take out, but now, after the renovation and addition of a bar, we find ourselves there sometimes 3 or 4 times a week! The staff has always been kind and courteous, remembering our names and our favorite dishes. Jeremy, at the bar, is accommodating and social, and pours a mean dirty vodka martini, the best I ever had! Weve come to rely on the consistent quality of a variety of delicious vegetarian choices all spiced to our preferred Scoville unit. The green cilantro sauce is unequaled! Kismat is a great asset to this wonderful neighbourhood. It provides for its denizens a gathering place where we feel part of a family. Highly recommend!
I ordered a chicken masala with garlic naan on the side. My stomach instantly started rumbling after a few bites. It was horrible, you couldn’t taste any flavor, the garlic naan… did they miss the garlic? NO FLAVOR I never leave reviews but Wow I definitely needed to with this one. I don’t recommend this place at all
Dont waste your money. I ordered from here once when i first moved in. Ive had a lot of Indian food from different boroughs in the city. This was one of the most expensive places for the least amount of food. And the tandoori chicken was super dry. I think i paid $4 or $5 for raita which chicken tikka masala usually comes with and it was the size of a small salad dressing to go cup. Ridiculous. Never ordered from them again. I Recently tried Om in east harlem. A million times better. I will make that trip the next time i want Indian food.
Service is amazing, staff treat you as if you are family and make sure you are taken care of. Even when busy they make sure to still come to your table and check in. Atmosphere is beautiful, classical instruments playing and omg the food! Incredible would recommend 1000X.
Ive ordered her for years and the food was always great. Recently started dining in and its soooo good and worth just going in. Great service and food!
Had an enjoyable lunch here with my family. The chana masala was aromatic and delicious!
First time ordering and wont do so again. Food got her fast but the curry tasted bland and watered down as well as everything else that we ordered. The flavored nan was also laughably bad with it just being plain nan with whatever flavor you wanted basically just thrown on top. For the price, I felt robbed as the quality wasnt there.
Decide to try this place out cause of all the good reviews... well I have to say the food was horrible. Poor packaging and all we ordered was Samosa and Nann bread. Over fried and small. The green sauce was overly powered by the cilantro but the one thing I can say the onion sauce was very good. I was highly disappointed
My partner and I ordered delivery yesterday, it made us both very sick with food poisoning. Watch out, you probably shouldnt take the risk!
EXCELLENT Indian restaurant. Its BYOB, fyi.Order as much garlic naan as you can; you wont be disappointed. The lamb or mixed tandoori is fantastic. Meats are tender and flavorful. The spices and sauces are great, and the wait-staff explain them well. The atmosphere is intimate and generally hushed, so it is easy to have a relaxing evening with great food and conversation at Kismat. We have ordered-in multiple times as well, and though still excellent, its not quite as good as being at the restaurant itself (the naan particularly suffers when not served hot and fresh). But such is always the case with food ordered to-go.
Been here twice. Sorry but the food is just too bland and underwhelming, even more so for NYC-level expectations. On the other hand, positive aspects include the spacious and peaceful ambiance (perfect for families), and the bar which is nothing special but totally alright nevertheless. Prices are also very alright if not excellent.
Second time ordering take out from them via ubereats I am still completely amazed. It is hard to find vegan options in washington heights so this place is a breath of fresh air. I ordered the aloo chloe grams spicy with brown rice and a plain naan with tamarind sauce on the side. fresh, flavorful, savory and authentic. I am not kidding when I say flavor. You don’t have to add salt to their food. Bonus the soup and cabbage that was to die for. True comfort food that has been a ray of light getting me through this sad quarantine lifestyle. Only thing I was missing was a vegan dessert. I can’t wait to come inside whenever that day is. Shoutout to the owners I’m your biggest fan.
We were here for new years. Probably the best indian food i have had since ive been in US. The host sham has been running this place for 34years and is passionate about the place.Dont forget to ask for shams handmade spicy sauce 🌶 ull love it for sure!!!!
One of my favorite Indian food restaurants. They just expanded the space so its has a nice atmosphere. the owner is friendly and they are beginning to notice that I frequent the place.
This is a great place to have in the neighborhood. We got the two person vegetarian meals for $35 and had enough food for two days. Really pleased with the quality of the dishes, and the freshness of the ingredients. Will be coming back to this place again and again.
The food is great, as usual. I dont know whether there is a new chef, but the Seekh Kebabs were HALF that size that they normally are... but the price hasnt gone down. What gives???
Bad. I just ate over at this restaurant. 20 minutes or more to get the menu. Ordered sizzling tandoori chicken. Didnt hear a sound of the sizzle when it was served. As a matter of the chicken was not even fresh. Didnt serve papad with the condiments. The server who is not freindly never came once to check on the food or anything. But the busser n food runner were nice and freindly. They can ofcourse better themselves by simply not ignoring or neglecting a customer who is of a certain race.
Great Indian food, for the neighborhood. My wife and I sort of stumbled onto this place when walking up to Fort Tryon one day. Its comparable to the stuff downtown around 4th street in the village. Feels a little pricey sometimes, but not any more than other Indian restaurants really. Its a great place to order from on Grubhub and really hits the spot.
The service was quick and the food was delicious! I will be coming back!
Messed up delivery orders a bunch of times, and the prices are high, but the food is good.
Great food. Convenient
Kismat has the best Indian food in all of NYC. Their malai kafta and chicken makhani are incredible and our go to’s. Also the happy hour is great! We love this restaurant !!
Disappointing. I had a delivery;I ordered a vegetarian meal, while eating I found a chunk of meat in my food! Before posting this I tried to get a explanation from manger he was not very caring. I feel sick to my stomach. I feel as I got someones left over food! I suggest to avoid this place.
Good service but food has no taste. Taste is plain too much garam masala. Deserts taste great. No zaika in their chicken curry n other dishes. They should change the chef or try different seasonings.
Our local Indian restaurant. The food is amazing here, the wait staff are the best, always ready with a great recommendation. Its a quiet spot but children are always welcome and kindly attended to.
I usually get shrimp curry but lately its been way overcooked.
Big portions and tasty food. In order the sorted appetizer to check several. Some were burn outside. Also I order a Tika masala and was ok, not really spicy
Ive been eating here for the past couple years and their food is pretty good but recently they raise the prices and lowered the amount of food that they give. The dish here is salmon Tandoori. I dont understand how you can give two pieces of fish in charge 19.99. I understand things are tough so raise prices but why make the amount less? Im not eating here ever again.
Tuesday night theres a jazz band. Great music, but can make it hard to talk. Food is very good.
Worst Indian restaurant....such a shame it’s the only one near and me and my husband would eat Indian a few times week if we could. Nothing is fresh here ...samosas seem day old, meat is low quality, sauces are better in a jar from Indian grocery...need a new chef :-(
Great customer service, peaceful atmosphere and delicious food. Well deserved🙏
First time dining here and it was a nice environment! Clean, nice staff, good food and pricing! Will come again 🙂Had cheese naan, lobster curry, mixed seafood biriyani and Lassi.
I am giving a one star because I cannot give 0. Horrible food and horrible drinks. The only item good there was water. I am not sure how they manage to get a 4 star rating. Not at all a good place to eat.
This is Bangladeshi cuisine not a Indian cuisine. See the picture of Aloo parantha ( according to them) . I like the taste of the food as it was good compare to other Bangladeshi restaurants but nothing like a Indian restaurant. I liked everything except when I confronted the guy that this is not Aloo parantha from india , He insisted that this is way it’s been made instead of saying this is the way it’s made in Bangladesh. If you making food Bangladeshi way then why can’t you put Kismet A Bangladeshi cuisine instead of naming indian cuisine.
When you offer tandoor you should at least ensure that youve marinated the meat not slapped it on 30 seconds before you serve it. The food was okay if youre ravenous but thats it.
Bar seat and tandoori wings. Yummmm.
Sunday Buffet [11AM-3PM] is a lovely experience, very relaxed and engaging--an excellent value...with the same quality and consistency their food and service has exemplified in Washington Heights for 30 years.
One of my first times eating Indian food but certainly not my last! The chicken Tikka masala was amazing as well as the shrimp. The garlic Naan bread with a variety of sauces from Tamarindo to cilantro were out of this world. 5 out of 5 for Indian food would definitely recommend to anyone!
The owner is rude as hell!! ordered a few times from a lady, she was cool, always got the order right... the dude?? should not b in the service industry... $5 for making the med rice large... yeah right!
The margaritas were decent
It was poor service. And the workers was not clear on the communication. I had one waiter walk away from the table while I was ordering. I order rice and sauce. My experience was poor. I would not eat there again.
My wife and I had our wedding reception this last weekend at Kismat. Our guests and ourselves were completely satisfied with Kismats food, service, and atmosphere. Our reception was scheduled from 3 to 5 on Saturday. Kismat was graceful enough to allow for the 30-minutes early arrival of our guests. The eight reserved tables were beautifully dressed and ready to receive our guests. Kismat separated our section from the rest of the restaurant which made for intimacy and privacy. They also set aside a long table to place the cake and gifts. A large contingent, including the chef and owner, at least three servers, and two bus persons worked diligently to make sure we had all we needed. Our party included thirty guests who were offered a five-course meal with meat, vegetarian, and vegan menu options. We are glad to have chosen Kismat for our wedding reception.
Used to be my default Indian place but in recent years it has suffered a decline. Today after ordering take out there was big chunk of plastic in my Kurma. Never again Kismat.
Food was pretty good, a bit overpriced for what it was but not bad. Service was also a little slower than ideal for how busy it was. Overall not bad :)
Only do dine in. Never do delivery.. Delivery orders take over an hour and then appear shortly after you call to find out what is going on. Its not amazing food but only option for Indian in the neighborhood.
One of my favorite restaurants in the Heights. Kind, helpful servers and really incredible (and affordable) Indian food.
Got tandoori for two, beef and chicken.Simply awful. Meat WAY overcooked and dessert inedible. And far, far too expensive.Last time we make THAT mistake.
Today 1st June I visited this place and order chicken biriyani and lamb birayani. Both the quantity is very less and quality is not up to standard as per their rates.
Delicious food! Delivered on time. Very tasty , and good portions imo. Hidden gem in the Washington heights area
As this being the only Indian spot the food is really good. The service is good and though the meals can be a little extra, its worth the money
I ordered take out and it was really good. I got the vegetable samosa, the chicken makhani, the basmati rice and garlic naan. Everything was very good, I really enjoyed the chicken makhani it was delicious! I’ll definitely be going in person soon.
Great bar with professional service, nice happy hour and delicious food at an excellent price point. The only downside for me is walking up the stairs at 17th Street to get there!
Good Indian food near The Cloisters. Pricey.
I have been coming to this restaurant for 20 years, both locations! I come up from midtown just to eat here! Best Indian food I Manhattan!
Love it!!!! Yummy!!! So delicioso!!!
The staff has no respect to their customers they are racist and would call you rude and wont serve you if you are wearing a hijab thinking you are begging or wouldnt pay for their nasty service to beginner with they are certainly one of the worst restaurant I have gone to and will never try to even go to any Indian restaurants again
Every dish Ive had here is so delicious. Their chutneys, especially the cilantro one, are out of this world.
Only Indian in the area and thankfully its quite good. Newly renovated with bar now. Staff very friendly. Toddler approved.
Great food! 20$ brunch is a buffet with a drink choice.
A wonderful neighborhood Indian restaurant with very good food and attentive service. Plenty of outdoor seating, too.
Favorite Indian food place in the city
Delicious food, a dine in dinner for 3 cost around $100
Used to go here years ago. Its so much better now. Great food, music, service, decor.
Brand new renovation and expansion. Still a great family friendly Indian restaurant with consistently high quality and excellent service.
Horrible experience. The waiter was utterly rude and I am absolutely sure that they would not have dared treat anyone horribly had it been any non Indian that they were serving. The waiter took my order and brought the wrong bread. His explanation was that they did not serve the type that I had ordered so he decided to give me the regular one. How come the customer here does not get to decide what food he wants to eat? When it comes to billing, they just gave me this hand scribbled page that does not even have the restaurant name on it! So I dont even have the right to get a properly printed bill? On pointing this out, the manager told me that they have been in business for 30 years and they treat all customers the same way.Deplorable. I came here to have Indian food got the taste of India of India in return, figuratively. And food is not great either. The taste has no resemblance to what a similar dish in India would taste like. Nothing authentic about this restaurant.
Weve been semi-regulars and huge fans for more than a year, but I finally had to post a review when I saw the one-stars—are you kidding? This is our go-to spot in the neighborhood for both delivery and dine-in. The food is great, the staff is so kind and friendly, and we always have the best experience. We appreciate a well-labeled menu too as people with dietary restrictions. Everything is labeled for vegetarians, vegans, and those who are gluten-free. Theres even vegan/gluten-free naan, and we are obsessed with the piazi. 100% recommend, tip well, support local restaurants!
Eat here all the Time! Food is wonderful, service is quick and friendly. Never had a bad experience
I love this restaurant. It is well designed, food is great, wonderful service and reasonable prices.
Really cute and affordable! $3 Octoberfest and good portion size!
Only had drinks, and enjoyed live music
Food has sucked in this place for many years now, unfortunately. Also, last summer, my friend had bit on a full size nail inside his Seek Kebab in front of my eyes. But the bar had been actually a nice hang all these years. Not sure what happened to the bartender Jeremy who used to be a nice guy but something must’ve bit him in the behind or he’s simply just ain’t gettin’ nuff lovin’. He’s become a maniacal control freak with some sort of nervous instability syndrome. Mad Dog Flippy Hands would be the new nickname for that little fella. He barks at customers and flips out for no obvious reason. Many people have been complaining about that. So as the food there took a long endless dive down the cut corners slope a while back already, he followed with his little bar right down the kitchen’s butt crack, a wide one at that. What a sad story… 🤦♂️
Best Indian food ever! very grateful for the menu being well marked in terms of gluten-free and Vegan!
Great food and variety, great atmosphere in the evening. sometimes a little empty, with okay service
Very good food! Low prices! And weekend music band:) great place!
Food was fine, but the service was awful. This is truly the longest Ive ever had to wait for food, then they overcharged us at the end.
Rude bar staff. Food is subpar as well. I’m a local, been going here for years, but ducked in during a rainstorm with my 9 year old and immediately told that kids weren’t allowed at a bar table. Not the bar obviously. Won’t be back. Embarrassed that is what a local staple has devolved to. Not for nothing, there were three people in the restaurant. I get it, if that’s the rule but the bar tender was rude. Could have been managed better. Jeremy should get rid of this guy — Pablo. Also, as long as kids don’t consume alcohol they can sit at a table in a restaurant in NYC per the current laws and regulations as I understand them. Obviously, the establishment owners can set their own rules, which they are free to do and can only assume they’ve done in this case.
Lot of food for very cheap. It was also really, really tasty. Will definitely visit again.
Such amazing food. I’m a vegan and love the options!
Food is delicious! The people working here are amazing !
Good neighbor restaurant. They just expanded their dining room and seasonal out door seating.
Well-seasoned dishes, fine service. Noisy bar.
The food here is tasteless and bland. Please try elsewhere for a better Indian experience.
Excellent service, food, presentation, family owned community conscious restaurant. Also very clean. 💖😎💐
Came for birthday. Absolutely love the food. I live far so the last time I came was 4 years ago. I was introduced to this restaurant as a child by my grandmother and mother when it was located on Broadway. The food is just as good as it always was so many years ago. Wish I could come more often. Great job to the owners!
Great food and affordable prices. The lamb masala was excellent.
Decent Indian for a good price. I have been going here for years and it has never let me down
There was something furry on my naan. See pic.
WONDERFUL Indian food, I only wish they could deliver to me in Staten Island!!
Pretty good Indian food. Was a big fan of their chicken kurma and definitely recommend it to anyone who has a taste for it!
Good food and good service. The owner is always there to take care of customers.
Excellent food and service. The ambiance is also quite lovely.
Good spot for a workday lunch. Well seasoned, delicious foods at a fair good price
Great food. Was there on Jazz night. Great music.
Food got here much earlier than expected and was still warm. Unfortunately thats pretty much the only good thing I can say about it. If I had been in a small town in the Midwest it could have been adequate but for NYC the quality was abysmal. Tasted like it had been cooked by decent chefs who had only heard about how Indian food should taste. Cost for one greasy naan was practically highway robbery.
Amazin venue, great chef, great music, and the food? To die for!! Recommended 100%
One of the best dining experiences! I highly recommend this place!
Horrible! Should not be called Indian food. Not sure how this place is still running.
Delicious food, reasonably priced, lengthy happy hour
Good Indian food and live jazz every Friday!
Was there on Tues night to hear some jazz. Ordered the appetizer plate. it was reheated but cold. Otherwise edible. I was too hungry to send it back.
Very friendly, fast service, great atmosphere and delicious food.
We had a take away from this place. The food was not delicious at all. We will not recommend to go back to this place. The service the quick but the food taste was no where close to even average. Naan were below our least expectations. Curries were also the same. Malai kofta didn’t have a usual kofta but something very strange tasting ball of some potatoes and veggies . Palak paneer we ordered, we had to hunt for piece of paneer in that.
Went here for the Washington Heights Jazz festival. What a delight! The food was excellent (I ordered the lamb vindaloo), and the service was beyond my expectations. Of course it was also all enhanced by live jazz music at the time!
So good that it will make your mothers food look like Lunchables!
I am very happy to discover this place! Fabulous food. I loved everything! I will always come back.
Day of visit - July 8, 23 - Around noon.Never had SWEET SUGARY Samosas in my life and SUGARY SWEET Chicken Biryani as a native Indian man. This is what I received when I ordered a plate of samosas and a chicken tikka biryani at Kismat. Recently, I moved to Washington Heights and have been contemplating ordering food from this place. I decided to eat out at this restaurant with a visiting Indian friend from Boston. We both were disgusted by the food taste. More details below —1/ Veg. Samosa was sweet AF and we had to ask for the chutneys to the server a minute after they were brought to the table. So he got back with chutneys from a common chutney utensil ONLY AFTER we asked for it.2/ Chicken Biryani was disastrously sweet with coconut shavings on top of it!!(wait, what!!?? 😳). From the look and taste of it, we felt that it was basically a vegetable peas pulao with some chicken curry mixed into it (plus sugar). At the time of payment, we notified the guy that the food is extremely sweet and why, to which he responded stating that we didnt ask for it to be spicy when placing the order, otherwise the base taste is supposed to be sweet. We were like - what? Are we supposed to ask for it to be NOT SWEET (let alone ask for spicy)? I mean neither of us even look white for our appearance for them to assume we would eat SWEET INDIAN BIRYANI and would have to notify them to not make it sweet if we want it spicy.
Delicious , well priced but, not quite spicy enough.
Absolutely great experience! Friendly and helpful staff. Chef was awesome!!
I have enjoyed going this restaurant for over a year now. I was there yesterday (3/14/21) during happy hour and ordered several cocktails, including a whiskey coke. Before ordering that I asked the waiter if it was happy hour, to which he said yes. I ordered the drink and was later charged the listed price of $5. Today (3/15/21) I went back during happy hour and had two whiskey and cokes and an order of samosas which cost 4.25. When I went to pay I had been charged $31 dollars. When I brought to his attention he simply claimed whiskey was not a house liquor. As a restaurant employee I know that whiskey is always a house liquor. I asked to speak with a manager and there was, according to the waiter, no in charge there. This a great place to eat if you want to spend whatever the staff there feels like charging you at that moment in time
Nice buffet. only wished they had palak paneer on the buffet
The food was disgusting , the chef should know how to make biryani , worst biryani ever so disgusting , I just waste my money , who put coconut in biryani , taste is disgusting , I will never order food from there .
Malai kofta and crab kurma were quite good. Had it with the chili cheese naan.
Food was absolutely garbage. No taste at all
I celebrated my Birthday there!I had a marvelous time 🤗
Ive been visiting Kismat for years now. Ive always appreciated its surroundings and authenticity. The food is really good and the spices and flavors are always so warm and welcoming. Being located in a very tightly knit area of Washington Heights I think its fair to say its one of the best in the area. I highly recommend it to those looking for some authentic Indian food. Enjoy!!!
This is the kind of place that has developed a following of regulars, and you can feel it in the place. Very, everybody knows your name. If thats what you are looking for and you like Indian food, this is the place for you. The crowd seems to typically be 30+.They have a long happy hour 1p to 8p week days. They also have a $20 brunch 11:30a to 3p on Sundays. Live jazz on Friday evenings.
Food is great just not for take out the kurma tikka chicken is mmm delicious
Major attitude and unprofessional phone skills by the order taker - it is the 3rd consecutive rude tone that I have experience by this establishment.
Ive been ordering from here regularly for well over 10 years, and quite often order the Chicken Makhani.Tonights version was NOT the same as it has been for over a decade, and I was quite disappointed. It is tangy & fruity & the medium spice level is higher than usual (possibly just seems spicier because there was very little creaminess to the sauce?) I wish I could describe it better.I am yet giving 4 stars, because I absolutely love this place! Perhaps theres a new chef tonight? Or its a fluke?I dearly hope they have not officially changed the recipe, as this version was NOT good. I will definitely call & discuss it before choosing what to order next time.
I love this place. Lunch special glass of red or white wine only 5.00. You can order appetizers if you are looking to sample things. Friendly service.
Delicious Indian food. Reasonable prices.Caring service.Highly recommend.
They say its an Indian Restaurant but its a Bangladeshi Restaurant. The food is very very cheap quality. They put sugar in every meal to make the American customers happy and show that its not spicy. Its not the Indian way of cooking. Also, if you order for delivery, the delivery man leave the food at your door without even knock your door. Its not Indian food. Its a kind of making money food.Sorry,
Poor quality food. Curries seem like vegetables with water. No taste
A local favorite that has been around for a long time. Food is very good but there is better Indian food available if you are willing to travel. Very friendly staff. Reliable take-out service. Cant wait for the dining room and (small) bar to be reopened once the Covid crisis is over. Extra credit for supporting local jazz musicians.
Service was excellent. Always making sure everyone is happy with the outcome of their meals, etc. The chefs specially made hot sauce on the table is a spice lovers dream. The food was delicious. Very pleasant experience all around.
Strongly advice them. Very delicious food, the service was one of the best and very reasonable prices. The place looks good and very clean. I loved the fact that the chef came and served us the food and talk to us about the way how he prepared it. Lovely place
Amazing! Excellent, high quality Indian restaurant. The gluten-free vegan Naan is so good and tastes just like normal. Samosas were great too. Dont skip the traditional Indian desserts on the menu!
Fantastic food. Freshly made hot naan. Friendly waiters. Large space and flexible menus for parties. Jazz on weekends. Stylish split-level design. And dont miss the bathroom lamps!
Love eating here for lunch and dinner! Love the vegetable piazzi
The food is pretty good, the service is lacking in barely decent manners. Its a very comfortable and my usual place to meet with friends. I like that the business was able to expand. The place looks great. Not that comfortable interacting with the waiters though.Edit: my leftovers were not handled properly. Bringing this place down to a three for mediocre service. The location named Clove is far better in every way.
Their usual adequate to very good cuisine was not up to part at all last night food looked reheated and leftover very disappointed
It was an absurd. I am a regular customer and been there couple times. We 2 ordered through grubhud the CHICKEN MAKHANI and naan we always got it right. This time was way too spicy, after couple bites couldn’t taste anything… called them and the guy said HE WASN’T GOING TO DO ANYTHING BECAUSE WE ORDERED “medium”. We spend $56 on it. He said would give us credit of one dish in our next purchase. Doesn’t know how to Treat people! Disgusting! RUDE!!!! Doesn’t deserve anyone’s money! You lost a loyal client! When I was there higiene wasn’t a priority for them. HEALTH DEPARTMENT!
The owner is a doll. Cute space. Food is just so-so. I cook so I am admittedly hard to please. Really warm staff. Great as a local bite.
Love this Indian restaurant, it reminds me of my trip to Delhi a couple of years ago. The food is always delicious. Have had amazing experience both dining in and ordering delivery.
Very tasty dishes, we recommend the mashroom soup and very kind people..
Epic atmosphere and experience eating at a restaurant with character and a vibe.
Food is so delicious and fresh.. very nice and professional workers... they treat you like family.. I love this place best in the city 😊
Very tasty meal with friendly staff! The bar has happy hour until 8 on Saturdays featuring $4 drafts. A bit pricey but the food is worth it.
Meh... I preferred their sister restaurant, Clove, which is smaller, warmer, and feels more intimate. Kismat felt like an Indian sports bar. We went there for lunch on a Friday and were initially the only patrons in their giant dining area, a few folks sitting outside, and some excessively loud customers sitting at the bar (who we couldnt see because of the wall partition, but who we could hear very clearly). The service we received was so so, but the food was still tasty. And the front door conveniently situated right on the street corner where customers are most likely to walk up---that is not really an entrance, but rather is kept locked while directing bar customers to the left and dining customers to the right---throws people off and feels oddly segregating.
The food is superb especially the Vegetable Samosa most importantly the service is friendly and loaded with lively conversation. The prices and portions are on point. Love this place!
Amazing brunch buffet on a Sunday. $20 all you can eat. The food is delicious and the service was prompt and friendly. A real gem! I’ll be back again soon!
Just had a delicious meal out in the lovely summer night from friendly, attentive servers. A lovely neighborhood sidewalk. The chef hand delivered his own, unique hot sauce. A great welcome to the area.
Well-prepared food, attentive service
Worst customer service ever spend your money somewhere where they’re Appreciate you spending
The atmosphere is nice the service is ok. They were attentive and didnt keep us waiting, but i wouldnt say it was friendly. The food is northern Indian style. Dont come here looking for heat, theres more of a sweetness to it. The spiced tea was perfect and the food was very good.
One of my fave go-to’s for Indian food, generally reliable and consistent and if anything is messed up with a delivery they always fix it. It’s also affordable and you get just the right amount of food.
This was my very first time eating Indian food...the server was extremely patient with me..answered my questions and my lamb masala was excellent!!! Super friendly staff. Loved everything!@
Great food and the best, semi-secret weekend karaoke bar above 96th. It’s gets properly loud and weird in the best of ways. It’s a “Cheers” vibe meets “Bohemian Rhapsody” and a Hunter Thompson house party. Get the tandoori wings if you’re carnivorous.
Some of the tastiest Indian food I have ever had. One of the neighborhood gems
Deplorable! I ordered from them through Grubhub, indicating in the special order section that I have a food allergy. The food came laced with the spice I’m allergic to, on top of everything!I called the restaurant and, instead of apologizing, the manager yelled at me that I should know that Indian food always contains that spice! (Which I know is not true). He was very rude. How about calling me before delivery to tell me that they could not prepare the order without the spice, instead of delivering a meal that could kill me?Luckily, Grubhub took care of it, but I was left without food and a sense that they really don’t care about their customers.
If i can give a zero rating i would of giving all zeros. from the moment you get there you can see how unprofessional the waiters are there are no spoons forks on the table so we assumed they will bring it with the food they bring the appetizer with no bread or a way to eat it and when you ask for it the waiter comes and says he only has two hands will go get a third hand if u cant manage it than you the waiter takes you order and doesnt bring it all at once brings the casserole with only one plate of rice for three orders and you have to wait for the other waiter to come see whats wrong and just apologize to bring the spoons and doesnt bring anything am sorry to say but this is the worst experience i have encountered the the whole USA
Average, bland, overpriced Northern Indian food. Nothing interesting and not very fresh, but typical for New York. I took my Dad here a few times. They are the only Indian place that I know of in this area, so they have a monopoly. Why I stopped going, was A) I didnt feel like I was getting good value for the price, and B) They didnt treat me all that well when I had a table by myself. If I go down to 2nd Avenue, the Indian restaurants treat you like they are happy youre there. I guess this place is just doing well enough that they dont have to care. Well I guess the feeling is mutual at this point, I dont really see myself going there again.
Called to ask questions about the menu and was told the “gluten free” naan is cooked in the same area as the gluten containing breads. Any celiacs or truly gluten intolerant folks should skip it. Didn’t stick around to ask anymore questions as the staff seemed annoyed I was even asking.
