Dive bars are my personal favorite and this place is exactly how I pictured it. It’s covered in stickers, license plates and memorabilia which I love to gawk at while I enjoy my well tequila on the rocks, a total dive bar type of drink. The female bartender was friendly and prompt and the crowd seemed nice and warming, I’m mean hey; we’re in a dive bar, no one acts better than anyone here which I adore. It’s smaller and linear but sits many between the bar stools and on the wall chairs. Bathrooms are typical in nyc dives, graffiti, stickers, and hand written messages. Definitely swing by here if you want to experience the village.
Cashonly dive bar in the West village. Usually fun bar tenders, small space, and lots of flare. They have a happy hour til 7 pm not exactly sure whats on it tho. Got a 7 dollar stella
Great crowd- nice bathroom!
The atmosphere the size of the bar and the attitudes brought in by the people make this place very uninhabitable trying to drink here and have fun is going to be impossible its not even an easy fit for someone whos slim the bathrooms are small and cramped usually dirty smelling like urine one time someone pooped on the seat. They dont have food options people steal your money and Ive had someone try to sell me drugs dont waste your time this bar is shitty go to different spots not too far away that you will have a better experience with less attitude filled people trust me
Great local color. Good classic bar
Normally wouldnt post a review of a bar, but am a little upset at how rude the bartender was. She knows who I am. The phone girl. She charged my phone (thank you) but when I was on the way out I heard her making fun of me to the locals. Not cool. Literally just sat there reading a book and had two beers, solo travelling, unnecessary to make me feel so awkward and unwelcome. John, a local at the counter, was a lovely guy. Wouldve stayed chatting with him for the night. Her, not so much.
Not much to say just a tiny dive bar to enjoy a couple of drinks with friends
Thursday Night: music not too loud so you can talk with your friends; $4 Rolling Rock, friendly Service, what else do you want ?
Tiny bar but has a tasty beer and good music.
You have a good chance of having your cash stolen here. Local thieves mingling around the bar with the approval of some of the shady bartenders. Surly atmosphere, not that fun to drink in for the area.
Good dive bar. Love the bartender and prices. No food that I saw, but the place had a good jukebox music selection
A very nice, lowkey hole in the wall type of bar. Prices are affordable and the ambiance fits the neighborhood its located in. The owner is a chill, respectful, polite man who treats all of his patrons equally. My only issue is that there isnt much room in the bar itself but that shouldnt affect your decision to drink here.
Erin is the best! Ill send all my people in the industry there.
Honest dive bar w/ an interesting price range. Good music playing here, but sometimes too loudly, reverberating in the nearby walls. But if you look for a dive you can stomach it.
Great bar till the bartender’s friends show up (Dane). Was sitting at the bar for a few hours, put $40 in the jukebox and was enjoying the drinks, atmosphere and music! Two of the bartenders friends show up and they kept skipping all our music.. the bartender and the friends were laughing and making smirk comments at us. Overall jerks. Only have a drink here if you love lame music and rude bartenders. Except for Pete.. Pete’s great… sorry he has jerks working for him.
A dive in kind of bar, not really big, cool atmosphere and vibes, affordable drinks, bartender was nice. Only took cash. Music could have been a bit better but really cool place to grab a drink or two!
Everything was great! I got my food for a good price. Just was a little small and had to wait but worth it!
Very good very friendly bar. Have been to the bar before heading to the High Line which is a close walk. Friendly atmosphere that you can meet with new people.
Love Johnnys! I stumbled upon this place years ago and it has been my favorite ever since. A neon sign above the door that simply says BAR is what did it for me and I knew it was my kind of place. And it is. It is authentically divey and not pretending to be. Drinks are great; people are fun; staff is great; location is optimal; juke box is usually playing great music. What else could you want??
Clean and fun little dive bar where youll walk in, have a few beers with friends and walk out realizing its hours later. Love that we can order food from nearby places and have it delivered to the bar since they dont have food on their own. Whats challenging is finding a place to eat it but its part of the appeal.
Its a tiny little dive, but it doesnt have the youre not cool enough to drink here vibe that a lot of dive bars do. Bartender Zack was awesome. They have a wall of Burt Reynolds drawings. Really nice spot, I enjoyed myself (even though Im a lightweight who gets trashed off of one drink).
Well, Im kinda surprised by all the positive reviews, because this place was one of my few negative experiences in NYC. Mainly due to the bartender. Maybe I caught the bartender on a really bad night, or they dont like people from out of town, or maybe I didnt tip well enough. Im not entirely sure. But the female bartender basically asked my friend (whos local) and I to leave and I got the impression that its just because she didnt like us. A bit rude, but no probs, just found a better place around the corner.
This place was AWFUL. A guy ordered 4 shots trying to flirt with me and my friends and then tried to make us pay for the shots. We said no and he continued to refuse. We went to walk out and the bartender hopped over the bar and tried to FIGHT us over the drinks. She shouted saying he was a regular and that we better pay or shed fight us. The bouncer did nothing as the old bartender got in me and my two 21 year old faces threatening to fight us. Ive been at other bars before where I ordered mixed drinks and the bartender had no issue when we decided not to have it. This was a tequila shot and could have poured it back in the bottle. The bartender immediately assumed the situation and was so incredibly inprofessional. The fact that she jumped over the bar with her fists up with the bartender is just disgusting and a disgrace to this bar. Paid 20 dollars for shots that no one took.
Tiny little dive bar. The drinks are cheap, strong, and good. The bartenders are funny and good natured. Theres a jukebox, but if it goes silent, the bartender might start singing dirty tunes at you!
One of the very best dive bars. Cheap. Filthy dirty. Tiny. Awesome. Excellent jukebox. They have a chaser called the beetleback shot made with some hot sauce and beet juice that will make you forget you ever took a shot or ever heard of beetleback. That said, have one and enjoy it. At least ask to look at the bottle which features a woman riding the back of a beetle.
My absolute favorite dive bar in NYC. Cheap beer and zero expectations. Just bud light, a kind barkeep, and a smoking section outside. Plus Mexican food across the street,l. Who can bet that?
Very cozy bar.Nice vibe. They need more draft beer options.
One guy working the entire place! On point…A minimum spend on 20$ if you’re paying by card!
Love this place. One of the best bars Ive found in Greenwich Village. Proper little dive bar, super friendly bartender, nice crowd and good drinks. Definitely coming here again next time Im in NYC.
Johnnys bar is a great place to just chill and grab a drink. There is an outdoor seating tent with a heater so you dont have to worry about sitting inside 🍺🍸🍻
Bar tender was really rude, told us to leave and my friend only asked if she could try some random persons drunk with his permission. She told us to leave and wouldnt serve us. I know doesnt make sense just like it didnt make sense to us. Very disappointed by the reviews. Usually like dive bars but that ruined my experience for sure.
Kristy the bartender rocks! Lovely person and as it was our first day in NYC she gave us lots of good tips. Authentic dive bar. A must to visit. Aske her for a Mango Mussolini shot
Johnnys is my favorite type of bar-- dirty, old, the walls covered in layers of detritus (posters, photos, flyers, newspaper articles etc). Also the home of my favorite shot chaser, the Beetlejuice! A Rolling Rock draft, a shot of tequila and a Beetlejuice.... Nothing makes me happier. Great place!
Not enough stars for this place. Great spot for drinks late night, amazing atmosphere and excellent bartenders. If you’re here post 2am, you’ve had or are having a good night.
Great neighborhood dive bar. There was only one bartender on a busy Friday night which was strange and made it hard to get a drink but good vide and fun patrons.
Great Place! Opens at Noon and $3.00 Beer Specials Too! Could use a Larger Bathroom with Mirror The Plus here is your going to meet Famous Talented People Here...
It’s a dive bar. Got what we came for. Cheap drinks. Idk what the deal with the bartender was though. Must’ve been having a bad night. That’s the reason for 3 stars.
Cool vibe, but we were told there was no happy hour special at 5pm on a Thursday.
Last proper dive in the west village. Small space, dim lighting, classic rock, and the absence of Instagram models and kids make Johnnys Bar an enjoyable escape from the areas typical scenes.
A wonderful dive bar with cheap drinks. A bar where one can get house cognac for seven dollars is my kind of bar; no pretensions. The bartender named Christina is wonderful.
Cool dive bar for this part of town. Its long and narrow, with stickers galore to add to the atmosphere. Bartenders seem to be quite efficient in serving drinks, making for shorter wait times. Enjoyed it and would go back without hesitation.
Great little old school dive bar. Not many of these left. The Guinness was cold, fresh & less $$ than a lot of other places.
What a wonderful spot. Just off the subway too. Wasnt planning on going in. But so glad I did. Service was fast, prices very fair. My kind of bar
The best dive bar in Greenwich Village.
Tiny little bar full of character. Nice place to sit and res our tired feet. Locals gave us some nice tips on the city.
First time in NYC. Found this gem. My name is Johnny ironically. I had to stop in. Bartender Vania was great. Im a lifer bartender, will definitely go back next time Im in the city. 👍🤙
Dive bar. Nothing more, nothing less. Nice bartenders and tight spaces! Decent prices. 2 Stella draft & shot of Jameson $20. Chill atmosphere. No complaints.
Short changed by bar woman who has been referenced in earlier reviews. Gave her a $50, got change for a $20. Checked this with her, she had a very well-rehearsed explanation, but I know for a fact I wasnt carrying any 20s at the time.
PERFECT DIVE BAR. Good prices. Friendly bartenders and the crowd is always warm and welcoming.
Fantastic dive bar. Exactly what I expected to see when my little brother said hes bringing me. Cheap drinks. Cozy space. Graffiti covered bathroom. I love little places like this. Not 5 stars because the music kept turning off.
This a bar lovers bar. And the bartender is brand name.. Bathroom could be locked from the inside so you might have to wait.. But while you wait enjoy the jukebox, enjoy the drinks.. and get yours.. Always an interesting time.. Bring your friends.. A thanks
Good dive bar. Decent beer selection.Friendly service. No food.
Great people, great drinks. Pick a song and vibe. This is the spot.
Good dive
Amazing little dive bar with super friendly staff. Great happy hour
A true dive bar with great specials. Thusfar the best dive bar Ive been to in NYC!
A legit dive bar in The Village. Complete with cheap drinks and staff who will pretend to sympathize your kvetching. Cant ask for anything more.
Great dive bar. Shhhhh dont tell anybody
Love this west village dive. Always an experience. A place to get lost in the best of NYC ways.
Does Vonya still work there? What a gem. Wonderful bartender in a tiny bar.
Awesome dive bar. You wont find cheaper drinks in NYC!
Perfect bar! Loved everything about it
Awesome old school NY dive with all the beers and spirits you would want. Also war hoorse bartenders
. .. .. . I guess? Its definitely a dive bar. If you want to go to a dive bar ironically (considering the neighborhood), i guess youd do it here.
Great dive. Nice and compact. You will meet some characters, try to keep up.
Definitely no frills. Just a chill spot to grab a drink. The Margaritas on special were well made. Experienced female bartender is a hit with the dudes. No food available.
Came in tonight (Monday) with some friends and our bartender was awesome. Such a sweetheart and attractive to the max. A great little spot that is very reminiscent of old NY punk bars. A++
Nice drinks for few dollars. The bartender is really nice and helps foreigners.
The hippie behind the bar shouldnt play that dump TV with 1950s television shows is boring bro save that for your apartment.
Cosy little bar with a reasonable selection of beers and good service
This place is amazing! I love the people and the space. The drinks are strong and cheap. Something interesting always happens here.
The best in NY! Amazing Amy 😊
The perfect hole in the wall
$76 for 4 miller lite bottles 2 high noon and a Stella draft. Dive bar feel that comes with the highest prices in NYC .
Great bartenders, great atmosphere, good people. Great at being what it is, a bar.
People think this place is good? If the beers were $3 maybe, 10 a pint? i could go to a better place.
Jukebox, great crowd, good prices for Manhattan, classic taciturn divebar bartender.
Nice place to hang for a Monday evening with some old friends that I havent seen since before the pandemic.
A literal hole in the wall that preserves the pre-Guliani new York pretty well. Beer and shot specials.
Awesome dive bar!
This is a dive bar for people who dont go to dive bars. Bartender was quick and attentive, so no complaints there. Ordered a Coors light and well tequila shot and it was $13.50 (poor bartender has to deal with quarters). Looked around at the crowd of 20+ people and their was zero diversity.Save yourself some trouble (and cash) and hop on the L for a few stops to LES for plenty of real dive bars that offer the same drinks and a better experience for less than half the price.
One of the finest establishments in nyc. Period. Emily rocks!
Cheap, good crowd, great bartender. Cant beat that.
Best dive bar in the village! Erin is the best!
Great music, bartender was funny. Had a great time.
A great hole in the wall in the West village
Cool place and friendly staff
Nice croud. But, this place has little four legged tenants running around. Lol.
Love this place, used to drink there with Johnny in the very early 90s. I pop in when I can but its still the same old dive bar I love.
Great dive bar - cozy and nice staff.
Awesome music, great drinks, real people, and fantastic bartenders. Go, drink, be merry.
Cheap drinks and cozy atmosphere. The jukebox has all the hits!
Erin the bartender is the best! Hands down a good time.
Good dive, liquor cheaper than beer believe it or not
Standard dive bar with good people and great bar tenders.
YO THIS IS THE BEST PLACE EVER MAD VIBEZ MAD CHAIR MAD BEER MAD TIME!!! Yelled at for climbing around !! But otherwise U can’t miss this NYC destination
Dive bar. They let you deliver pizza here, which is amazing!
This is my wifes favorite bar and I agree it is a lovely time. Pro tip: spend $5 on the jukebox to turn the vibes toward your direction.
Standard dive bar with typical drinks and beers. Neither imaginative nor remarkable.
The best bar ever! Tip Tina a lot!
Martin was awesome! Will visit again next trip!
A nice, tiny dive bar with a brick wall and a cool vibe.
What a way to spend a Saturday afternoon/evening/night. Guaranteed to get into some great conversations in here with awesome people. Great jukebox. Great fun.
Amazing bar with great service.
West village bar...good spot
The bartender was a great time! But the roaches crawling up the wall were a little too much, even for NYC.
Crowded dive bar. If thats what you want, this is the place for you.
Came with my lady while in the rain only to get asked for my Vax card? Really?!? I thought the city wasnt asking for those anymore. Left down the block to a better bar!
It is a good dive bar.
Amazing bar with queen bartender Erin playing all of the hits on the juke box! Charged my phone from a long traveling day. 🤘🏻
When all the other bars were closed on Christmas Eve, this Oasis came to rescue
Not happy hours here, but u dont need it.Because price so cheap.I order 1 whiskey on rock $5.502 taco $4.001 taco for free at Thur..My whole body is happy... Have drink and food...Enjoy it!!
Fast service, good domestic beer selection. Did not have any happy hour specials.
Was the perfect, low-key kind of place where you could talk without being overrun with a lot of noise. That said, the jukebox played great tunes throughout the visit. Think of your favorite local bar (wherever you live) and Johnnys should come to mind.
Best freaking Dive Bar in New York
Great dive bar on the edge of the village
Greatest dive bar in Manhattan. Wonderful owner. Eclectic crowd.
Love the old time bar.
Packed little whole in the wall. Great place to meet a friend for a drink. Decent prices, too! Though there is a rather large credit card minimum that they could do a better job about mentioning before opening a tab.
Great & friendly dive bar , with good prices for beer , as for the bar staff the guy & girl with the red hair are top notch , but make sure with the blonde one they call Erin, you check your change & what notes you give her she has a habit of getting drunk , and messing up bar tabs !!!
Great place to stop in for a drink on a cold afternoon
Very nice bar, honest beer for a honest price. Good music and cozy place.
I met a friend her for a date and we ended up making a bunch more friends with the locals. Good prices, limited space but great vibes. Ill be back when Im in town.
Fun little locals dive. Tiny. Not good for groups.
Erin... The hostess with the mostest... Holding it down through the pandemic. Pro tip... Dont go here if youre boring. :)
Friendly bartenders, great prices. ATM is $3 fee but thats New York for ya. definitely swing by if youre in the neighborhood! really cool place and great atmosphere too.
New Yorks quintessential dive bar. The bartenders always provide great service, and its fantastically grimey and rundown, yet somehow held together by its large collection of souvenirs left by guests or found by owners. Reliably has a mix of men and women from all walks of life. Its definitely a place you should go to more than once if you live in or visit the city.
Phenomenal dive, car bombs for 10 bucks!! 5 stars!! Not for fancy collars
Johnny dont read and johnny dont write but he runs a smooth bar
One of the original and best dive bars in New York City. Not much more needs to be said than that. Great atmosphere, good jukebox, cheap and nasty drinks. If you like Dives you simply must go.
Tiny bar. Hole in the wall dive bar. Good drinks Bring a friend can’t complain.
Small and frequently packed but extremely fun
The perfect dive bar for a cheap night out in the village. It encompasses everything you love about dive bars. No frills, no complications, no messing around, strait up drinks
Bartender with sassy drinks were cheap and they had a pistachio vending machine. Couldnt be happier for New York City. Fuc them $20 drinks. #paylocal
Johnnys Bar is awesome. I found it on - where else? - Yelp while staying in the area overnight, & it turned out to be just what I was looking for - a solid dive full of interesting people & mostly-cheap beer. Our bartender was incredibly friendly, a peppy blonde who was working the bar solo but totally rocking it. We found seats at the end of the bar & she always served us quickly, always remembered our orders but gave us room to change our minds, & even set up little signs around the bar as the night wore on that read Dont forget to take your card! to help drunkies remember to collect their belonging. We met some great folks, which wasnt something wed intended but sort of emerged organically when we ended up sitting near a couple from Iceland & Denmark & chatted with them about... mandolin stores in the city? Seriously, they were great & the whole thing was great &, yes, GREAT.We stayed until about 1:15. When we closed out, the bartender told us shed given us each a drink on the house for being friendly; unsurprisingly, we tipped her big.Id definitely go back. Dont expect any great shakes - this is a dive bar, after all - but its a damn good dive bar!
Nice, relaxed bar for a drink after work. The only problem is it is small, so come in a small group.
Cheap drinks for the area, chill vibe, great people! Tried the dark and stormy - sweet and tasty! Listening to REM. its a good dive!
Drank everyday in this bar for years ,pop stars ,film stars famous names best bar ive EVER been in in my entire life great crew ,hope alls well peter and gang, english al,i will be back,,
3 stars cause its advertised as a dive bar. Make no mistake, it is a dive people. But for what it is, its a great dive. Keep it up.
Bud light $7.50 a bottle
Im reluctant to rate this classic dive because its small, often crowded, and always full of characters - in other words, I hope it never changes. The bartenders are all really friendly and the drinks are dirt cheap. They also have spicy beetleback shots, for those so inclined.
Dirty, dark, cool. Good jukebox and drinks.
Open on XMas day and it was great! Bartender was awesome and the atmosphere was cozy. Would definitely come back anytime.Well done!!
Erin was awesome and Tony as well! From Orlando and we had a blast ! Great drinks
One of the few truly cheap places in the West Village. The decor has no rhyme or reason at all -- a chessboard stuck to the ceiling, but zero other ceiling decorations; the menu Sharpied on cards and taped to the wall -- but that just adds to the charm. And $3 beers? An oasis near Meatpacking.
Cool little dive. Was packed but still got great service.
Nice place to get drink, but their ATM stole $20 from me. Dont use the ATM in this place.
Great bar, excellent prices on beer, friendly staff & fantastic location.
Amy the bartender and clientele were friendly and kind. Cant wait to go back!
Mark older gentleman on sun, mon, tues good music late nites 9-4am. Never know who comes in located. Greenwich village always a fun place opens at noon. Neighborhood bar and very friendly patrons
This dive bar offers a unique and crafty shot each day as a special, so come here to try those out. Great jukebox here too!
Fantastic bar with a brilliant host.
Johnnys was a good hop stop for our night out. Didnt try the food (held out for Brindle Lounge) but tue drinks/vibe were 👍 👍
Greatest dive bar in the area. Dont go here cause I want it all to myself.
Cool hole in the wall bar nice for a quick drink
Trashy and divey with some really chill bartenders that know how to hold great conversations.
Ask for the shot of the day. Coldest Rolling Rock on this side of the Mississippi
Way older crowd, they lost my card
Best dive bar in Manhattan.
Real West Village Dive. No frills drinks, reasonably priced pints, friendly tatooed bartenders, dark as the dreams of most of the patrons.
Great bartender & great prices! Merry Christmas Amy
Another Dive Bar..crowded sketchy crowd. Their drinks were not to be trusted. Bottled beer is safer.
One of my favorite dive bars in Manhattan. Classic
Great bar, happy folks!
Great hospitality X
Thursday 1/16/14 around 7pm I walk in with someone, looking for a place to sit down and order drinks. The place was packed; I ask a group if the seats next to them were available - they were not, they were reserved for friends who were smoking outside. Ok. So we walk towards the back to look for seats. No seats. We turn right around and started walking back out. We were in the premises for less than 60 seconds. Right before we got to the front door, a female bartender (brunette, glasses - dont know her name unfortunately) came over to our side of the bar and yelled HEY! Bathrooms are for customers only! We were already halfway out the door by then. I get confused, turn back around. I look at her and said, I was looking for seats. I didnt use the bathroom. She goes, Oh. Oooookaaay.... And just stared at me as though I was lying. I give her a confused look and throw up my hands. She goes berserk and starts yelling, DONT ROLL YOUR EYES AT ME!! I get annoyed and yelled back, I didnt use the bathroom!! She keeps on yelling, IM ALLOWED TO SAY THAT!! IM ALLOWED TO SAY THAT!! We get into a yelling match, with her getting the bar riled up and cheering for her in some trashy drunken fury even though nobody in the bar had any idea what was going on. My conclusions: she was either a) trashed or high out of her mind while working, or b) didnt like the way we look for whatever reason and decided that I committed a horrible crime by setting foot on the premises looking for a place to sit down and order drinks. My suggestion to anyone going to this bar: if it looks crowded as soon as you walk in, leave immediately or else the staff will harass you for simply existing. DO NOT walk around to look for a place to sit or stand, unless you want the staff to accuse you of some severe wrongdoing, such as walking towards the back of the bar, and then organize some lynch mob after you for some imagined felony. This is NOT a friendly bar; its an extremely hostile environment. My experience clearly shows that if they dont like the way you look, or the way you walk, or the way you dress.... They will make you suffer within 60 seconds time, and run you out.
Cheap drinks. Lovely dive bar atmosphere thats increasingly rare in the city
I was asked to leave a hashtag in this review, but that would defeat the purpose and greatness of this bar. If you frequently use hashtags this isnt the place for you.
Incredible Atmosphere. True meaning of a New York City Bar
This is my favorite bar in Greenwich Village. The only reason I didnt give it 5 stars is because I dont want more people coming here.
Friendly and comfy. Amy is awesome!
Pretty much the definition of hole-in-the-wall.
Coolest small dive in NYC!
Nice little spot. Friendly staff and cheap drinks.
Great wee dive bar. Friendly staff and very open to solo travellers.
Cool typical NYC Dive Bar
Cool bar. Real boozer without pretense.
Best Dive Bar in NYC!
Dark dive bar generally friendly clientele
One of my favorite bars in the city
Small hole in the wall, great beer choices 😀
Great Bar, great service
The last remaining dive bar in the West Village, from before the term dive bar was invented. Not a destination bar by any means, but rather a place to end your night or start your evening.
Nice tavern, good service.
Great small bar. Low prices.
Had a great time. Recommend.
Had a great time! Will be back!
I spent all my money here Id do it all over again
My friends liked it
Unpretentious neighborhood dive bar.
Quintessential dive bar.
Great neighborhood dive bar
Sweet spot. Beetlejuice anyone?
It doesnt get cheaper in Manhattan
Legit. Less than 2 quid ($3.50) for a pint, barmaid is a superhero. Tip well!
Best dive, great staff
Cheap drinks in the heart of Manhattan.
This is really a great dive
Best bar staff ever
