This is a very welcoming bar (even for breeders). It never fails that we strike up a conversation with a fellow patron. Everyone is here to enjoy themselves. It gets very packed but the bartenders are very attentive & will get you a drink in quick order. Keep in mind that its cash only. They have a terrific jukebox that will keep you dancing (if you can find the space) all night.

It was PACKED but that’s what made it so much fun! I was able to snag a seat at the bar with my sister! We immediately were greeted by the bartenders and other patrons were just SO SWEET. The crowd sang songs together all throughout the night which I thought was so cute, very NYC LOL. We definitely made some cool friends that night and my experience was very memorable… I will FOR SURE BE BACK. Oh yeah also it’s CASH ONLY and the ATM actually stopped working when we were there so just make sure you have extra cash on you!

I had a good time until I didnt. I am a Brown woman that is visiting from another state, and I was kicked out of the bar for something that I did not do and was not my fault. There was a white woman and her party that (for the 2.5 hours that I was there) was purposefully and maliciously grinding, making out, and bumping into my friend and I who are both brown. In the end, the person that I was with unfortunately became aggressive and pushed them because she was sick and tired of asking them to give us space after they were not respecting our wishes. The bar is small, but there /was/ enough room to move someplace else. They chose not to. When I tried to explain the situation to a worker, I was asked to leave despite not being part of the problem and after trying to get them to understand what had been happening for the past two hours. I tried to give cubby hole the benefit of the doubt when I read from other POC that this was not an inclusive space, but after my experience, I will never be going back because these people are only allies to white lesbians.

I have been here twice, once it was extremely packed on a weekend. It was really hard to order from the bar, but that was only because there were so many people. But I had a really great time and everyone was extremely nice. The second time I went was during the weekday and there were maybe ten people in the bar along with me. Again everyone was really nice, and I had a great experience both times. I get the feeling that this is a local bar, but I could be wrong about that.

One of the best bars I have been to in NYC 🏳️‍🌈 We were there on a Monday afternoon and it was still buzzing and atmospheric as if it was a Friday or Saturday night. Deb on the bar was friendly, welcoming and hilarious, playing great tunes, drinking games and handing out free pizza! Super quirky and colourful decor inside. The happy hour is also great - $5 fizz! For an LGBTQIA+ establishment, the service was VERY unsettling and incredibly poor. The only female bartender on Cinco de Mayo with the glasses was INCREDIBLY rude after catering to her “chosen family” at a FULL bar for 90% of the time. I had spoke with 3 other guests who also felt ignored and under serviced. Not only have other patrons waited for drinks like myself for over 20 minutes , but another woman was trying to get the bartender’s attention because she asked for 4 drinks and only received 3 of them. The bar tender was dismissing and talked back with a rude attitude. After reading some of these reviews—I know which bartender the negative ones are concerning.Working in the service industry, if you are catering to a personal guest on a VERY busy day — you at the very LEAST should be asking the guests nearby if they need anything when you pop over. Don’t just ignore patrons because they will never come back.

Incredibly friendly lesbian dive bar. Cash only! They do allow outside food to be ordered, but the space is tiny and Ive never seen anyone with a pizza inside. For the record, they do offer hot pockets, but the bartender will turn you down the instant you order them. Its a meat market for lesbians in the Village. Both bartenders and patrons are very friendly to straight people and the atmosphere is always fun. I recommend for late night drinks as it closes at 4. I do not recommend for food.

If I could give 0 starts I would. Absolute worst bar I went to (12/31/24). The bartender who opened that day has the worst customer service and treated my friends and I like we didnt matter. I understand the annoyance of having to work a “packed” bar on a holiday, as I too work in the service industry and have had to work holidays; HOWEVER, my friends and I were respectful the entire time we were there and were met with attitude throughout the entire experience. For being an LGBTQ+ bar it was not friendly at all. I would never recommend this place to anyone. And to add to that, after we left Cubbyhole; my friends and I visited a different gay bar in manhattan where the bartender stated that he has heard many people say that they were not treated fairly there……yikers

Bad place to go. Unsafe. Bartenders extremely unprepared and rude to costumers. Drinks are questionable and unreliable. They only accept cash, you wont have proof of what you drank. Besides myself, I know several women who had a very bad time after going to this bar. The bar stinks, the toilets are filthy. If you go to this bar, its better to go with friends and never alone. I attended and today I dont recommend it. There are many other places that offer much more quality and especially safety if youre queer.

I was here on Saturday night by myself. I came in earlier when there was no line and had been there for about an hour and a half. I had met someone who left to walk their friend to an Uber and was coming back. I had just ordered a drink and walked over to the window to look to see if she was in the line that had formed outside. As I turned around to walk back towards the bar, the bouncer (probably the only cishet male that was there) stopped me and pointed to the door. Confused, I asked what he meant. He said “you have to wait in line” to which I said “I’ve been here for over an hour.” He said “I didn’t see you come in” etc etc. I literally had a fresh drink in hand, a few others folks said to him “she’s been here” and he still very rudely made me leave. I gave up as he was making me feel unsafe and had to wait in line to come back. Then had to dump my drink that I had just paid for.It is truly sad that this is supposed to be a “safe space” and it isn’t. The bartender was rude - I understand being overwhelmed because it’s busy but I’ve been in that situation and there’s a way to handle it and not be rude. Nobody helped me with the bouncer when I tried to ask other employees for help. It’s just not a great place and I’m not in any rush to ever go back.

The manager was cold and unhelpful when presented an issue with the broken jukebox, and after asking for tequila shots, we were given something that did not taste like alcohol. Cubby used to be a staple in the already very sparse nyc lesbian bar scene. Theres been such a shift in energy over the past couple of years and its just sad to watch. The new bartenders like Marisa only serve their friends – My friends and I tried to order a drink recently and were told some glass broke so we need to wait. They then proceeded to make the exact drink we ordered for their friends and took shots with them... Never came back to help us.What used to be an unpretentious gathering place that fostered community suddenly has become one thats more interested in optics. There are so many lesbian/bi/pan and trans centered places opening now with great vibes committed to fostering a welcoming and inclusive environment. I would suggest The Bush, Marys, Gingers, Hot Rabbit, Mood Ring, the Woods on Wednesdays, Scope and Daves Lesbian Bar pop up parties. I really wish they would do better. Community is everything and I feel management and the newer bartenders have lost sight of that.

Sadly, I feel like the only real reason people go here is because you can be a gay AND buy cheap drinks (considering the area). I will say if you have no requirements about who ends up in your mouth or pants, this bar is great for you. Otherwise, once this place picks up around 9/10: the staff is too overworked and/or underpaid to properly handle their business(grouchy, Im doing you a favor attitude). Its TOO packed to be fun, like subway rush hour packed plus people at that super emotional part of drunk. Their bar is in a quiet neighborhood, and its your, the customers fault for their poor business decision making skills when your outside talking with your smoker friends/smoking. I genuinely believe this business only survives because there are very few cheap options for a lesbo just looking to hang in nyc. I leave angry that I gave them any of my money 75% of the time and only go when a friend wants to nowadays. We lesbians should demand better of our bars just like the guys do, and not just settle for whatever exists. In my opinion, Cubbyhole is the lesbian community settling and this establishment doesnt deserve any special attention or any of your hard earned money unless nothing else is open/youre desperate. I also should note that I rarely write reviews and this 1 of 2 Ive taken time to write about this bar tonight, Im that done and have had too many conversations with others about how much this place sucks. LEZ DEMAND BETTER.

All my visits to this place have been unique and pleasant. I have read some of the other reviews, my experiences have been from good to great. Have had the good fortune of visiting on at least three separate occasions, when visiting NYC each a different day and time . Got to experience the place during lazy weekend, weekday afternoons and a Saturday night ( line out the door). Miracle of miracles got the same seats at the bar each time near the jukebox. An ideal location for observing/ overhearing the organized chaos of the other patrons. Bar people each time vary and generally I had no issue. Bring your cash as no Apple Pay / credit/ debit cards accepted. This also ranks as the #1 conversation topic overheard (since using cash is so 2008). Listed as a place to revisit each time I’m privileged to come to NYC.

This place could be fun but overall is awful due to the horrible service. Woman with dark hair and tattoos is the slowest bartender w/ a nasty attitude. Caters more to gay men than any women in the bar. Yelled at young girl in her 20’s for not tipping. Weird ambience and vibe. Not the ideal place to pick up women bc it’s swarming with gay men. Bartenders can be rude. I only come once a year to cubby but each time I come I get treated like an outsider. Don’t feel welcomed.

Bartender on 8/31 was super nasty to me and my friend! We tipped him multiple times and he was giving us dirty looks and being nasty to us the whole night. Then around 2am they started closing the bar over an hour and a half early, so we asked why they were closing so early he literally said to us “well when you don’t tip we close early” EVEN THOUGH WE TIPPED HIM MULTIPLE TIMES. The audacity is unreal, and I thought this place was supposed to be open and accepting, turns out they are just money hungry. If this place hires bartenders that treat their guests/customers like this then I want no part in it and will be informing others not to come here. Bartender if you are reading this you are a nasty rat and I regret tipping you. YOU DESERVE NOTHING.

Best lesbian bar in this entire country. The crowd here is typically late 20s to 30s. Drinks are typical of a dive bar (dont expect anything fancy). Vibe is very clique, and if you are a person a color not friends with white regulars then you will feel out of place fast. Service always slower for us too. Everytime Ive stopped by this place in the past decade it keeps getting worse. Most unprofessional bar ever. Dont even get me started on the bouncer. Venue was a fire hazard, no room to move or dance (but not the workers fault). However, the male bartender was very aggressive about us tipping (we literally were about to tip too) and after we paid he came back to us and asked if we tipped the female bartender and then asked the female bartender if we tipped as if he didnt believe us (like we did 😐). After paying $20 (and some tip) for an overpriced margarita in a plastic cup, it was the weakest margarita ever filled to the top with ice. There was no alcohol in this drink. Worst place ever, couldnt pay me to come back, rude and degrading staff, and would never spend my money there again. If youre the male bartender that night reading this, please work on your attitude issues, its not a good look

So sad to see a place that should embrace every one on the gay community because we are allPart of the rainbow ! I’m a TS and I didn’t know this was a lesbian bar because is listed as a gay bar on Google but apparently you are welcome only if you are a lesbian ! Service was rude and there was a tall blonde lesbian with a bad haircut being very friendly with everybody(other lesbian) except of course Me and I don’t need a red carpet service but at least be nice to people who want to spend their money at your bar ! I will never return to this place and obviously I will never recommend it to anyone I know ! Is 2021 let’s change from inside of the community to ask the rest of the society to treat us better 🏳️‍🌈

I get the concept of the bar, its great for the community, but as a whole it seemed like entering a random dive bar in upstate New York. When I went two weekends ago, the security guard outside kept letting people in and out in groups, while my girlfriend and I were waiting outside the bar for about 30 minutes (Im not even dramatic, timed it) It was so packed to the point, that you really couldnt move or stand, so I stood in-front of the bathrooms (you know how that goes) Drinks were a bit over-priced, even for a domestic beer but like everyone says I guess its the city.

Review №173

Its a great bar but if you go after 10 or so it starts to get packed and becomes hot and muggy. Happy hour is nice though, drinks are cheap. Be warned that on very popular nights theres a line outside so you might have to wait in the cold a bit. The gay culture inside is mostly reserved to friend groups and couples. The bartenders are friendly and nice.

Small, ok drinks, cash only in 2022.The main thing that has bugged me last few times is how weird the bartenders have been and how borderline unwelcome i have felt.It seems like if your either not white or at minimum a regular you receive a standoffish vibe or basically ignored. I thought i was overreacting but reading other reviews likely not. Its likely if you come here on a busy night you may literally be the only poc in the joint which isnt cubbyholes fault but they dont exactly promote inclusivity. I come here on occasion bc its like a cornerstone lesbian bar, but its faaaaar from a favorite and i dont need to come at all really

We came into the bar hoping to support one of the few lesbian bars left in the country, but instead we left feeling unwanted and out of place. I dont know why a bar in 2022 wouldnt be taking cards

I used to love this place however after the pandemic, they got some new staff (kids) and the service has been horrible since then. The host had her friends sitting down drinking water. While a group of us (5) wanted to actually get drinks, sit down and spend money. We were told to go inside even after i pointed that out. We went inside and 1 of us took 20 mins to get attention from the bartender and get beers because apparently they couldn’t make any of the mixed drinks we asked. I used to love cubby but they need to either talk/train their staff on the business aspect of things and customer service. Whether i know the bartender or not should not play a factor on what type of service I receive. I hope they better the staff and the service quality.

First time in New York. Wanted to visit some of its best gay bars and unfortunately disappointed by the service here at cubby hole as we stood there waiting 25mins to get served. Eventually we got served but the drinks tasted watery and not enjoyable. Also very crammed. Understandably its a cubby hole but that doesnt mean you need to get as many as you can inside. Maybe recommend getting some outdoors sitting. We left after 1 and half drinks. And unfortunately again 1 toilet for women so long of a queue.

I had already been at this bar which is famous for its cocktails and drinks specials. I visited again last night, which was a Sunday night and ask the male bartender (I am a woman, maybe that explained it) for the drinks or specials menu. He said there were no specials and kept leaving every time I asked him something. I finally got a draft and an orange juice and of course I didnt leave any tip. Later on that same night I saw an ad featuring their Sunday nights drink specials. I wont say I wont be back as the atmosphere is nice and unfortunately there are not many places for gay ladies in New York, but I was really disappointed with the service.

Ive been going here for years. I have to say since the election it is way less friendly to people who appear to be gender-binary or straight regardless of how you self-identify. Its regrettably understandable but also really a sad sign of the times. I cant bring a lot of my friends here anymore and they used to be so welcomed. Lesbian, Gay only with a focus on Gender-Binary I would say. If youre not any of the above then you may be told its cultural appropriation for you to be there.

Would not allow a friend in here who had a government issued nyc ID had traveled for over an hour to get here. Was really excited to go to an inclusive LGBTQ place and was sorely disappointed. She was 33 years old, and it was her birthday, she is from Singapore and doesnt go around with her passport on her at all times. Has never happened before. They need to review their policies to consider what being an inclusive and accepting space means.
