Down & Out

Great new addition to the neighborhood, on 6th just off of Ave A. Really well done cocktails and a huge/impressive whiskey/scotch selection. The bar staff are super nice and were happy to answer all our pretentious questions about our drinks. Theyve also got oysters and a great selection of tinned seafood (mussels, mackerel, trout, etc). Supposedly they also make a lot of their own bitters and flavored syrups. Been back here three times and they’ve been consistently great.

Stopped by on a whim, attracted by a rare Saturday happy hour special. Space is a little tight, but the drinks are on point. The place has an ancestral connection to the Oyster houses of the turn of the 20th century, a tradition carried on with briny success and aplomb. Would whole-heartedly recommend for a couple drinks and Oyster plate. Looking forward to checking out their house pickle plate.

Josh Richholts new project. He is a bar impresario who formerly ran Bushwicks super bar the Well. He is a whiskey history scholar with great taste and deep knowledge about whiskey and the whiskey list is predictably excellent. There are also delicious cocktails and tasty bites with a focus on oysters but the crab cake sandwich and devilled quail eggs with salad hit the spot. Part of the best bar crawl in NY in the heart of the East Village adjacent to Death & Company. Recommended.

Excellent place to stop by for a night cap or pre dinner drinks. Has a great selection of cocktails, mix drinks, whiskeys and so many different kinds of scotch. It took me a while to settle for a Glenfiddich - 12yr single malt with at least 50 other scotch and single malt Im going to go back and try.

Always have a great time here - whether I come alone or with friends of all ages.The Oyster Pan Roast is one of my favorite dishes in NYC, full stop. Oysters are delicious as well. Keep on being a delight :)

Had an amazing evening at Down & Out, a Cocktails and Whiskey Bar in the East Village. The places specializes in small plates and offering an incredible selection of global Whiskey.Absolutely enjoyed the food and the whiskey selection, but the highlight was definitely the live jazz – raw, old-school, improvisational, and engaging. It transported me to jazz heaven.A true discovery of a down-and-out hidden gem in the East Village. Can’t wait to go back! 🎷

I stopped by based on reviews and friends’ recommendations of the cocktails. I was not disappointed. The cocktails are inventive, and they have an impressive whiskey list. Yet we weren’t expecting such incredible food. The oysters were fantastic and the whitefish salad and crabcake sandwich were excellent. Will definitely return. Great neighborhood and destination spot.

Awesome, creative cocktails and an impressive whiskey selection. Solid selection of natural wine and craft beer cans as well. We came for the oyster happy hour and ended up staying for the live jazz they had that night. Cool spot with a great atmosphere, will definitely be back

I came here randomly on a Wednesday night with some friends. Nice surprise to see some really talented and energetic musicians play live jazz! Also, the drinks were very good. Fan of My Little Cherished Wolf

Great spot with an awesome whiskey selection - including some old/vintage bottles. The drink menu has a nice mix of options and the prices cant be beat for NYC. The space also has several seating options - bar, booths and perfect smaller tables for date night. Cant wait to go back..

I was pleasantly surprised by this new establishment, with their impressive drink selection, especially as it pertains to whiskey. I found myself going back to “The Dirty Teacup” multiple times, along with their Espresso Martini. Definitely a must visit!

I cant say enough nice things about this place. Its a new addition to the East Village scene, so I figured Id give it a shot a couple of weeks ago and Ive been back 5 times since. In an area full of nice bars to get a drink, this is immediately up there as one of the best.Ive yet to have a cocktail or glass of whiskey I didnt love. Speaking of whiskey, they have one of the most thorough whiskey menus of any place Ive been in NYC. If youre a whiskey lover like me, then Down & Out is right up your alley.If youre looking for a place to spend the night chatting with friends over a great drink, this is the place to go.PS: The Crab Cake Sandwich is amazing

A descent new addition to this neighborhood. The live Jazz on Wednesday is a wonderful bonus. I think this i going to be a great spot. Will update this review over time but for now I will say, its worth the visit! :D

What an amazing shelf of vintage pours. Hidden away in the East village, Down and Out is worth the trip for the selection, the vibe and for the various offerings nearby as well. I was not disappointed one bit!

Beautiful new addition to the neighborhood with incredible craft cocktails, great staff and a crab cake sandwich that never disappoints. Madison is one of the best mixologists in the city and be sure to try the espresso martini!

To our surprise Thursday night was burlesque night and we enjoyed the show.Drinks we’re good and the atmosphere relaxed

Went to jazz last Wednesday and the drinks and food were amazing. Guess what I’m doing this Wednesday? Love the cocktails and the ambiance. Amazing date spot.

This is a must try cocktail bar! The staff is extremely knowledgeable and attentive. They were extremely understanding of an allergy and made sure we had a great experience.

Joshua is an excellent and lovely bartender. Ordered the “vache!” and it was incredible, will most definitely be back. Like tomorrow.

Excellent curated cocktails especially if you get Madison, she made us cocktails off the cuff that were top notch. Crab cake sandwich was a surprisingly amazing option. Definitely a solid new neighborhood spot.

AMAZING cocktails and a great oyster menu. The “Night at the Saloon” is particularly delicious. Burlesque on Saturday and live jazz on Wednesday makes this East Village spot a memorable visit.

Excellent beer and oyster selection. I was surprised to see the bar carry Oxbow and Maine Beer Co beers which are both fabulous breweries.

Down & Out is a FANTASTIC bar for whiskey lovers. Joshua and Joey are great hosts. The whiskey selection is absolutely incredible, with both contemporary choices and a selection of dusties. The space is nice, too.Highly recommend a visit!

Joshua is a brilliant mixologist and an equally fantastic host. Wandered in here on a whim and a local recommendation from Death & Company and enjoyed it thoroughly. Highly recommend stop, especially with live music going.

Really couldn’t have been better. A great bar where you can get a great beer or cocktail without breaking the bank. Our server Anand was outstanding. Overall 10/10 will come back.

Phenomenal bar. They have a fantastic selection of everything and the prices are so reasonable. The owner Josh is a whiskey collector and is so down to earth- he was attentive yet spoke to all his patrons the whole time. Madison was our bartender and was very sincere and knowledgeable about everything behind the bar- I love Gin and she made me an exceptional drink that was exactly what I was craving. Our neighbors at the bar ordered oysters and they looked incredible. Don’t write this off. If we lived in the neighborhood, we’d be here 3 nights a week.

Phenomenal bar. Drinks were a little slow, but waiter gave free bar snacks as waiting comp. Cocktails came and were great. Live music on a Wednesday night? Cant beat it. Give this place the attention it deserves.
